Chapter 1 SALEM CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION It had long been thought hat, when Stephanie mysteriously disappeared after going upstairs, that one of two things had happened. Either she'd left town, or she'd met Tommy Horton and stayed up there with him. However, neither one was correct. In actuality, she had, at Kayla's insistence, checked herself into the Salem Correctional Facility and Mental Health Rehabilitation Clinic. She is now under the care of...yep, you guessed it: Marlena Evans. One day, Marlena had just walked in. MARLENA: How are you feeling today, Stephanie? STEPHANIE: A little weirded out. MARLENA: Trust me, Stephanie, the male nurse is not hitting on you. STEPHANIE: I'm pretty sure he is. But, that's not why I'm weirded out. MARLENA: Okay, then. Why are you weirded out? STEPHANIE: I've been having these dreams every night. The same dream for at least a week in a row. I'm standing on a mountain, despite my fear of heights, overlooking Salem. And this man comes up behind me, and puts his hand on my shoulder. He says, in an English accent, "Sometimes you have to start over from the beginning if you want to start again". And then I wake up. MARLENA: I see. Does that phrase mean anything to you? STEPHANIE: No. I mean, it sounds like he's trying to give me advice. But, advice on what? MARLENA: Interesting. And it's always the same man? STEPHANIE: Always. MARLENA: Describe this man for me. STEPHANIE: He's caucasian, has a receding hairline, beady eyes, a thin smile, and bushy eyebrows. MARLENA: Have you ever seen this man before? STEPHANIE: No. MARLENA: Could you please draw a picture of him for me? Marlena handed Stephanie a pencil and some paper. A few minutes later, the drawing was finished. Marlena looked over the picture. Here is what the picture looks like. STEPHANIE: Marlena... MARLENA: Please, call me Dr. Evans. STEPHANIE: Okay...Dr. Evans, am I crazy? I mean, I know I'm crazy, otherwise I wouldn't be here. But, am I crazy? MARLENA: For repeatedly seeing a man you've never met or seen before in your life in a dream? No. STEPHANIE: So, what I'm feeling is normal? MARLENA: I wouldn't go THAT far. Recurring dreams do happen. I myself have a recurring dream about my husband John and I making love on the... STEPHANIE: Okay, I don't wanna know. MARLENA: Anyway, I shall look into these dreams as well as this man. What shall we call this man? STEPHANIE: I don't know. I've just been calling him This Man. MARLENA: I see. Well, I shall look into This Man, then.

I should have mentioned earlier on that this is kind of an alternate reality story to the how. Some things will be similar, but some things will be different. Chapter 2 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL It has been about a year since the DAYSaster that crippled him, but Jack was doing fairly well for himself. He had saved his daughter in an elevator that night and the elevator had crashed down to the bottom floor. At first, it was thought that he was dead. However, it was soon revealed that he was still alive, however his legs were badly broken. He couldn't feel them. He was now in a wheelchair. Other than that, he was okay. He had bi-weekly sessions with Marlena, due to the trauma from Afghanistan. He was nearing the end of one of those sessions. JACK: The thing is, sometimes I feel this twinge in them. It's sort of like when your foot's asleep, or something like that. It only comes every now and then. MARLENA: Well, maybe that's a good sign. JACK: Maybe. MARLENA: Well, I think our time i just about wrapped up. Marlena moved some papers on her desk. Jack noticed a picture and pointed at it. It was the picture of This Man that Stephanie had drawn. JACK: What's that? MARLENA: Oh, it's a drawing that one of my patients did. JACK: I've seen this man before. MARLENA: Really? Where? JACK: In a dream. Or, really I should say dreams. He's been in them every night for the last few weeks. MARLENA: Interesting. What does he do in your dreams? Does he say anything? JACK: I'm in Salem Place. J.J. and I have just had an argument. And this man comes up to me and tells me that things will get better soon and that the truth can be found easily if you know where to look. After that, he points at J.J.'s backpack. Then, I wake up. MARLENA: And it's this exact man? JACK: Yes, this exact man. Marlena... MARLENA: Please, call me Dr. Evans. JACK: Okay...Dr. Evans. You know how much trouble Jennifer and I have had with J.J. lately. His grades going steadily down, the people he's been hanging out with, his whole attitude in general lately. We're trying, we really are. But, this man, the man in my dreams, it feels like he's trying yo give me advice on my relationship with my son. MARLENA: I see. What sort of accent does he have? JACK: British. Marlena looked thoughtfully at the picture. MARLENA: Interesting. One of my other patients keeps seeing this man in their dreams as well. JACK: Really? Who? MARLENA: Can't tell you. Doctor/patient confidentiality. JACK: Right, of course. Tell me something Mar...I mean, Dr. Evans, am I crazy?

Chapter 3 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL JACK: Am I crazy? MARLENA: Crazy? For continuously seeing a man in your dreams whom you have never seen before in real life? No. As I've said, I know of at least one other person having similar dreams to yours. JACK: So, you're saying that what I'm feeling is normal? MARLENA: Well, I wouldn't go THAT far. But, recurring dreams do happen. I, myself have a recurring dream that John and I are swimming in a vat of chocolate pudding and... JACK: Okay. I don't need to know. MARLENA: Anyway, no, I don't think you're crazy. Bu, I am going to look into This Man for you. In fact, thank you for reminding me. I got this picture last week and had almost forgotten about it until you reminded me. I'll let you know when I find something out. JACK: Okay, thanks. See you later. Jack rolled himself out of Marlena's office. A few minutes later there was a knock on the door. MARLENA: Come in. It was Marlena's secretary. SECRETARY: Dr. Evans, you have someone here yo see you. MARLENA: Strange. I don't have any appointments set up for right now. Send them in. The secretary walked out. Not long after, Theresa walked in. MARLENA: Jeannie Donovan? It's been years since I've seen you. THERESA: Please, call me Theresa. MARLENA: Okay...Theresa. What can I do for you? THERESA: I don't know. I ave no idea why I'm even down here. Little Miss Perfect Jennifer sent me down here. She thinks that I have an attitude problem and that I need to work on it. MARLENA: I see. Marlena got out a pad of paper and started writing on it. MARLENA: Do you have any idea why Jennifer thinks you need an attitude adjustment? THERESA: Yeah, but I'm not gonna tell you. You'll just run off to her and tell her everything. MARLENA: Actually, Theresa, by law, I can't. Anything you say while in this office, seeing me in a professional capacity stays between us. The law and my oath as a doctor states that I am not allowed to discuss the cases of anybody I'm seeing with anyone other than them. THERESA: Okay, you wanna know why she thinks I need help? Because I won't put up with her b.s. Because I don't worship the ground she walks on. Because I have better things to do with my life than sit behind a desk and play fetch for her all day. She's out to get me! Everyone at this place is! MARLENA: I see. So, is there anything you do wish to talk about? I'm free for he next hour. THERESA: Well, now that you mention it, there is one thing I wanted to talk to someone about. Might as well be you since you can't say anything to anyone bout it. I've been having strange dreams lately.
