Chapter 507a
There were a million things to do before starting a new business and Philip was feeling the weight of it all already. Before he got so busy that he wouldn’t have time for what really mattered, he had to make good on a promise he made to Parker long ago. But first, he needed to talk to a couple of people to get their buy-in.
~~~
Maggie was sitting on the sofa watching Body and Soul when Philip entered the living room and sat down in Victor’s easy chair. She pointed the remote at the TV and pressed mute.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt your show,” Philip said.
She waved at the TV. “Ah. These soaps move so slow that I can stop watching for a year without missing anything.” She looked at him intently and set the remote down. “You look like you’ve got something on your mind, dear.”
“I do.” He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. “Don’t worry. Nothing serious. I’m getting Parker a dog and I just want to make sure you don’t have a problem with a pet in the mansion.”
“Oh.” She placed her hands in her lap. “Of course not. I love dogs. Both Mickey and I were big dog lovers. Melissa had a dog growing up and so did Sarah.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Well, the dogs were never on air. The actors were always afraid the dogs would upstage them. But I think it’s wonderful. It’ll be good for Parker, especially since—” Her words trailed off.
“Especially since what?”
“I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“Too late,” Philip observed.
“Well okay. It’s no secret that a child growing up with a single parent misses out a little.”
Philip had referred to himself as a single parent before. Even so, hearing someone else call him a single parent stung. But that’s exactly what he was.
“A dog can’t make up for a missing parent,” Maggie continued, “but Parker is a very loving child and lavishing his love on a pet, well, I’m sure that will be good for his soul.”
“I’m sure you’re right.” Philip cleared his throat to keep from becoming emotional. “There’s one other person I need to check with before we bring a dog home.”
Maggie’s brow knit. “Who?”
I’m guessing he’s going to check with Nicole seeing as she has an infant in the house It’s very considerate that he’s consulting anyone for a pet in his home where they’re all guests Another reason we all live Philip I agree this will be good for Parker’s soul I can’t wait for the moment he meets his new bestie Also Kpatch I love the pun about soaps moving so slow and not missing anything if you don’t watch for a year Made me laugh out loud 🤣
Yay a Dog!!! Love'd Maggie's reference of actors not wanting to be upstaged by a dog I think Pookie held his own against Roman and Nicole.
Chapter 507b
Henderson was standing at the kitchen counter, writing himself a reminder on a notepad. He looked up and smiled when Philip walked in. “Philip. What can I do for you?”
“I want to run something by you,” Philip stated.
“Sounds serious.”
“It’s not. It’s just, Parker wants a dog. He’s been asking for a long time and we told him we’d think about it. But with everything that happened, the dog got back-burnered.”
“Poor dog,” Henderson quipped. “What breed?”
“Don’t know yet. We’re going to the shelter to take a look this weekend.”
“Young Parker will love that. And I am happy to do whatever is asked of me.”
“I know. You always are,” Philip replied sincerely. “But the dog is going to be my responsibility and Parker’s. It’s important for Parker to learn to take responsibility for the dog. You shouldn’t have to do anything.”
“Not even give him a piece of rawhide to chew on?” Philip smiled and Henderson added, “I remember having a dog when I was a lad growing up in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was thinking I could help Parker learn how to be a responsible dog parent.”
“In that case, I’d be happy to take you up on the offer.” Philip patted Henderson’s arm. “Thank you.” He turned and started to go.
“Philip, before you go, if I may.” Philip turned to give Henderson his attention. “I can’t begin to say how pleased I am to have you and Parker back where you belong.” When Philip didn’t respond, Henderson shrugged. “This is your home, from the time you were a baby. To me, it’s where you belong.”
Philip sighed deeply. “No place feels like home without Chloe,” Philip admitted, his voice raspy. He squeezed his eyes closed. “I didn’t mean to say that out loud,” he backtracked. The truth was, he didn’t even know he felt that way anymore. He had done a good job of convincing himself he was over her, or at least getting there. “You can always speak honestly with me. And I understand. She’s that one great love of your life.”
He cleared his throat. “Time to move on though, don’t you think?”
“It’s not for me to say.” Henderson held his hand up as he thought for a moment. “But I am going to say this. I knew your father for many many years. More than forty years, in fact. And your father spent most of those years alone because he was pining for one woman, a woman he could never have. He was lonely and sad and as rich and powerful as he was, I felt sorry for him. Eventually, he met Mrs. Kiriakis and that emptiness in his soul was finally filled.”
With watery eyes, Philip smiled a sad smile. He remembered telling George the same story.
Henderson touched Philip’s shoulder. “If you don’t mind some fatherly advice, don’t let that happen to you, Philip. You’re such a special man. You have so much to give and you shouldn’t be alone.”
In many ways, Henderson was more of a father to Philip than his own father—that role model who supports you unconditionally and encourages you no matter what. “You’re like my second father,” he told the older man, “even if we’re not related by blood.” He opened his arms and gave Henderson a hug.
Henderson patted Philip’s back. “The feeling is most definitely mutual, son.”
Love that Philip has Henderson to talk to. I wish they'd show more of these relationships on the show.
What a beautiful conversation.
Aww, that's nice that Henderson is there for Philip to give him advice.
I also think Henderson secretly wants a dog, too.
Chapter 508a
“Daaaaddy,” Parker called up the stairs. “When are you gonna be ready?”
“Be down in five minutes,” Philip called.
Parker grunted and shuffled toward the living room where Nicole was rocking Holly. “Everything okay, Parker,” she asked.
“Yeah. Daddy’s just taking too long.”
“Too long for what?”
Parker’s face brightened. “We’re getting a dog today.”
“Oh. How exciting. I once had a dog too.”
“You did?”
“A miniature Yorkie named Pookie,” Nicole expanded.
Parker giggled. “That’s a funny name. What happened to Pookie?”
“Oh. Well,” Nicole hedged. “He was older and—.”
“He died,” Parker filled in the blank.
“Yeah. Sad,” Nicole added.
As Philip entered the living room, Parker asked Nicole, “Wanna come with us to get my dog?”
Nicole’s lips parted and she almost said I’d love to. Then she glanced in Philip’s direction and could immediately tell by his expression that he didn’t want her to come. “I wish I could, honey, but Holly needs a nap and Grandma Maggie’s out, so I need to be here when she wakes up.”
“Bring Holly along,” the boy suggested.
“She really needs to sleep. But I can’t wait to meet your doggie when you bring him home. Or her.”
Parker looked up and spotted his father. “Ready Daddy?”
“In a minute,” he told Parker. “I need to talk to Nicole for a second.”
Parker rolled his eyes but said, “I’ll wait for you by the car.”
After Parker left the room, Philip approached Nicole. He briefly smiled at Holly lying on Nicole’s shoulder, then turned back to Nicole. “I didn’t mean to—.”
“It’s fine.”
“It’s just that I always pictured dog shopping with Chloe. Me. Chloe. Parker.”
“And I’m not Chloe. I understand.”
With a sigh, he said, “I know I owe you an answer to the question you asked me. You know, about getting married. I really am giving it serious thought.”
“It’s okay,” Nicole interrupted. She placed a hand on Philip’s chest. “Getting a dog is going to be a special bonding moment for you and Parker. It’s important for you and Parker to have some special father-son moments, just the two of you. Take pictures. Text me.” She kissed Philip’s cheek.
