Prologue
“It’s okay, Parker,” Philip told his son. “Don’t be scared.”
Philip and Chloe had decided not to go to Greece for their honeymoon after all. It was too far away from Parker and they were just a little protective following his kidnapping a couple months before. On top of that, now that Chloe was pregnant, she didn’t want to be that far from her doctors for that long. Besides, they had had a lovely private yacht cruise to Canada a few months ago that was as romantic as could be, and they had come to consider that as their honeymoon, even though they weren’t married yet at the time.
Sure there were plenty of people willing and capable of taking care of Parker while they went on a honeymoon trip. Lucinda, Mary, Maggie, Nancy and Craig, Nicole and Daniel, George and Louise. But it wasn’t that long ago when Parker had been abducted from day care and held hostage. It wasn’t that long ago when they thought they’d never see their son again. Someday. Someday, they would feel comfortable leaving Parker in someone else’s hands. Someday they would take that trip to Greece. But, honeymoon or not, they decided they’d have much more fun with Parker along than without him, and they wouldn’t have to spend the trip worrying about him or missing him. And it turned out to be a great decision.
They spent that Sunday—the day after the wedding—packing. And napping. They were happily exhausted. On Monday, they boarded a jet bound for Florida.
Now here they were, staying at the Disneyworld Yacht Club, one of the resorts right on Disney property in Orlando. The resort had a boardwalk and a sprawling pool designed to look like the ocean. It was dignified, yet it was still Disney, character breakfast and all.
Right now, Philip was in the pool holding out his arms to Parker, who was standing on the ledge wearing water wings. It was early June and a steamy 92 degrees in Florida. The pool was filled to the gills with vacationers—people like the Kiriakises who were taking a break from the rat race to spend time with their families. Chloe sat at the edge of the pool a few feet away in her swimsuit and sunglasses, her legs dangling in the water, watching her guys.
“Don’t be scared. I’ll catch you,” Philip promised his son.
Parker squinted from the brightness of the sun reflecting off the water. “S’pose I drown?”
“You’ve got water wings on, angel,” Chloe reassured him. “They’re floatation devices.”
“Huh?”
Philip translated. “You can’t drown. The water wings will support you, Parker. And so will I. Come on. Jump.”
Parker stepped closer to the edge of the pool, his tiny toes hanging slightly over the rounded rim. “Ready or not, here I come.”

Chapter 1
Wednesday, June 9th
It was late afternoon and Philip, Chloe, and Parker were strolling down Disney World’s Main Street USA licking chocolate ice cream cones. Parker was wearing a mouse-ears hat, holding his mother’s free hand. Chloe looked at Philip. “This was a great idea.”
He swirled his tongue around the soft-serve, creating a peak of creamy goodness. “What? The ice cream?”
“Well yes, I’d never turn down ice cream. But I mean this trip. Parker is having the time of his life.”
Philip glanced down at Parker and smiled. “I’m having a great time too,” Philip told her. “This may be the first family vacation I’ve ever had in my life.”
“For me too,” she said. “And there’s no two people I’d rather share it with.” She looked down and touched her stomach. “Well, maybe one other person.”
“You know,” Philip said quietly in a stage whisper, “we do need to figure out when to tell you-know-who about that.” He gestured toward Parker.
“I plan to confer with M.A.R.Y. next time I see her.”
“What are you guys talking about,” Parker asked. “I mean, I know how to spell Mary.”
Chloe laughed a little. “You’re right, Parker. We’re on vacation and we don’t need to talk about Mary right now.”
“Okay, but you still haven’t told me what you’re talking about.”
Philip’s phone buzzed. “Saved by the bell.”
As he slipped his phone out of his pocket, Chloe reminded him, “Philip, we’re in a work-free zone.”
“You’re right. I was just sending the call to voicemail.” He clicked send to voicemail, but not before he caught a glimpse of the caller’s name on the display. “Hmm. I need to listen to the message.”
“Philip.” Before this trip, Philip and Chloe had both agreed that they’d be one hundred percent unplugged. Their focus would be on each other and Parker and nothing else.
“Yeah, just a sec.” He raised his index finger as he held the phone to his ear to listen to the message. His face fell and he stopped walking.
“Philip? What is it?”
Philip became aware they were in the middle of the lane, so he gestured for them to move off the main walkway. Philip tossed his half-eaten ice cream cone into a trash bin outside the souvenir shop. Chloe came closer. “What is it, honey?”
Quietly, he said, “My father. That was Maggie calling. He had another stroke.” Her lips parted. “I need to call her back.”
“Do you want to head back to the room? Make your call where it’s quieter?”
Philip shook his head from side to side. “I … I don’t think I can wait that long. Give me a minute.”
“Of course. Take your time.”
