Chapter 2
Back in the hotel room, Philip paced in front of the window with his phone to his ear. “Joe, it’s Philip. How quick can you get the Titan jet to Orlando? No, I’m not returning to Chicago. I need to be in Salem. Dad’s sick.”
Parker looked up from his spot on the floor in front of the TV and focused on his father.
“Thanks,” Philip said to Joe. “I’ll tell him. Give me a call when you have an ETA.” Philip clicked the off button and turned around to see Parker staring at him.
“Is Grampa sick?”
Chloe had been putting their clothes into an open suitcase on the bed. She stopped packing and waited to see how Philip was going to respond. He came over and crouched next to Parker. “Yeah, buddy. Grampa is sick.”
“What happened?”
“He had something called a stroke. That’s something that happens when blood isn’t flowing to some parts of the body the way it should be.”
“Is he gonna die?”
Philip swallowed hard. His voice cracked when he said, “I hope not. But we’ve gotta cut our vacation short. I hate to do that to you, but I need to go to Salem and see my dad, you know?”
“Can I see him too?”
“Well, I’m sure he really wants to see you, but I want to check on him first, find out if he’s up to seeing other people.” Philip ruffled Parker’s hair. He rose to his feet and walked over to Chloe. Taking her hands in his, he spoke quietly. “Listen. I’ve been thinking, sweetheart. Maybe you and Parker should stay here. I mean we’re only two days into our trip and there’s no reason for you to come with me to Salem until I know what’s what.”
“I disagree. We need to be there for you.”
“I just don’t want Parker exposed to this. Not yet.” He released her hands and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “He’s still so young and I want to shield him as long as possible.”
“I understand what you’re saying, honey, but staying here? No.” She was adamant. “It wouldn’t be a vacation if you’re not here.”
“Then maybe the two of you should go home to Chicago for now.”
“Chicago?” She cocked her head and tried to read him. “Okay, tell the truth. Why don’t you want us to come with you?”
“Exactly why I said. I don’t know what I’m gonna find, Chloe. Maggie made it sound like the situation is dire and I just think I need to go on my own for now.”
“You don’t have to, you know. You’re not alone.” She reached for his hand and held it. “You’ve got me to lean on.”
Philip appreciated that, he really did. But he had this feeling deep-down in his gut that he was going to face something unexpected when he got to Salem. He didn’t know what, but he felt certain it was going to require all his energy and focus. “I know I do, and I’m grateful. But this is just one of those things I need to do on my own.”
“If that’s what you want, I can respect that.” She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him. Resting her cheek on his shoulder, she murmured, “Whatever you need, that’s what we’ll do.”
He took a long breath and kissed her hair. Stepping away, he scrolled the contacts on his phone. “I’d better text Joe about the change in plans so he can update his flight plan. We’ll drop you off in Chicago.” He found the photo he took of their car’s location in the parking lot at O’Hare. “The car’s in long-term parking. I’ll send you the picture of the parking spot.”
Chloe recognized that tone. Philip was snapping into business mode to keep his real feelings under wraps. “Philip, you don’t have to be strong.”
He looked at her for a long moment. “Yes I do. Until I can assess the situation for myself, I have to stay strong. I can’t fall apart. Not now.” His phone buzzed with a text. “Titan Jet will meet us at the Orlando Executive Airport at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.”

Sucks that Chloe and Parker have to cut their vacation short, but I understand wanting to be there for Philip.

I'm glad that Chloe is giving Philip the space he needs to deal with what's going on in Salem. I do think that Philip needs to go and assess the situation before bringing Parker into it. You never know who or what you are going to run into in the Kiriakis mansion. Hopefully things will be ok and Parker will get to see his Grampa soon.

I'm glad Parker didn't get upset that their vacation was cut short. I think it's a good idea for Chloe and Parker to return to Chicago while Philip goes to Salem. Hopefully they can join Philip soon in Salem.

sad turn of events, I understand why philip wants to be alone, To him that would be two less things to worry about (he tends to over worry right).

Chapter 3
Wearing only his pajama bottoms, Philip paced the bedroom with his phone pressed to his ear. Parker slept in a separate bedroom in the suite and Chloe was finishing packing for the three of them.
“I’ll be on the first flight out in the morning,” Philip told Maggie on the phone. “I should be at the hospital by 10, 10:30 at the latest. Yeah, I know you are. Hang in there and we’ll talk tomorrow. Yeah, you too.” He clicked the “off” key on his phone.
Chloe was struggling with the luggage. “Honey, can you help me zip up this suitcase?” Philip came over and used his weight to press the top of the suitcase down before pulling the zipper around the case. “When you travel with a five year old, you end up bringing a lot more home than you started out with,” she explained. “Even in only two days.”
Philip hoisted the suitcase off the bed and set it near the door. He appeared lost in thought.
Chloe climbed into bed and pulled herself up against the headboard into a sitting position. “Penny for your thoughts? I could actually go as high as a dime.”
He smiled slightly and crawled onto the bed, lying on his stomach and propping his chin on his palm. “When he came to our wedding, it never occurred to me that might be the last time I’d see him up and around.” He shook his head from side to side. “This may sound crazy, but I’m not ready for him to die. I mean he’s over 80 years old, and we’ve never had the closest of relationships, but he’s—”
“He’s your dad and you love him.”
“Yeah. But it’s not just that he’s my dad. He’s Victor Kiriakis. He’s like a Greek god from mythology. He’s immortal.” He let his hand fall on top of Chloe’s. “I was a kid when he had his first stroke,” Philip remembered, “and we thought that was the end. Mom was already starting to arrange the funeral. And somehow he didn’t die. He got discharged and started barking at everyone as soon as he got home. It was a great day.” Philip laughed a little. “He stayed in a wheelchair for a long time, but he was as formidable as ever.”
“See.” She tapped his arm. “He’s beaten the odds before. He could surprise us all and do it again.”
Philip’s face fell. “Yeah, but he’s in bad shape. Maggie sounded really worried.”
“I love Maggie and all, but she has a tendency to be overly dramatic,” Chloe mused. “She falls to pieces just saying goodbye sometimes.”
“I know what you mean, but I don’t think that’s it this time.” He met her gaze. “I know he’s not your favorite person—”
“No, honey, but you are, and he matters to you and to Parker, and that means he matters to me too.”
Philip slid closer to Chloe and rested his head on her lap. She stroked his hair and thought about how Philip always wore his emotions on his sleeve, but he was working so hard at keeping things bottled up right now because he felt that was the only way to get through this. She hated the thought of going their separate ways tomorrow, of being away from him at a time like this. She wanted to be there for him, to support him during this awful time, but she knew Philip well enough to know he needed to do things his own way, in his own time and at his own comfort level. This was a very personal situation for him and she needed to respect his wishes. She and Parker would come to Salem whenever Philip was ready for them.
She felt his body relax as she stroked his hair. “Philip? It’s going to be okay. I love you, you know.” When he didn’t respond, she realized he had fallen to sleep.

Glad Chloe is there for Philip, despite her feelings about Victor. And that Philip’s going to Salem.

This is so emotional. I'm glad Philip is talking to Chloe about his feelings and not just running away.
