Chapter 458b
“I was seeing someone in Seattle—nothing serious—but we officially ended it since I’m staying in Salem for the foreseeable future.” She smiled slightly without realizing it.
“And? There’s someone else, isn’t there?”
“What makes you say that?”
He pointed at her with his eyeglasses. “The smile on your face. So, who’s your new boyfriend?”
“Well, he’s not officially my boyfriend just yet, but I am kind of seeing someone.”
“Anyone I know?”
“I don’t know. Do you know Nathan Horton?
“You’re seeing that little twink?”
Stephanie’s jaw dropped. “Nathan is not a little twink,” she answered defensively. “He’s not a twink at all. He’s a doctor and he’s very smart. Like off the charts smart.”
“Don’t try to sell me on Nathan Horton. We were at sleepaway camp together one summer and he’s a twink.”
“If you’re implying he’s gay, you’re wrong. Believe me, I know.”
“If he’s not a twink, then he’s a twerp.”
Stephanie couldn’t keep from rolling her eyes. “Sheesh Alex. You were kids. He’s not a twerp anymore. I mean, presuming he ever was one.”
“People don’t change.”
“Of course they do.”
“Not deep-down. Not quintessentially.”
Stephanie raised a brow. “Quintessentially? Are you into mysticism or something?”
“I just know that you’re gonna get tired of Nathan-goody-two shoes real fast. Too boring. Be honest, Steph. You like the bad boys. Your history doesn’t lie.”
Stephanie squinted at him, but said, “You’re my cousin, remember?”
“Not by blood.”
“Be that as it may, since you’re my boss now, I think we should avoid getting personal and keep the conversation on a professional level from here on out.” She focused on her side salad and stabbed a piece of lettuce with her fork.
Alex put his glasses back on as a self-satisfied smile crossed his face.

Chapter 459a
Melanie was seated on a bench in the square, focused on her phone, keying information into a website when she felt a pair of hands grip her shoulders. She yelped and quickly turned around. “Nathan! You scared the daylights out of me. What the hell?”
Nathan laughed lightly and joined Melanie on the bench. “I called your name but you were busy texting or something.” He pointed to the phone in her hand. “What’s got you so gripped?”
“I’m signing up for a bunch of gigs.”
“Gigs?”
“You heard I’m not working at University Hospital anymore, right?”
“I heard you got a bum rap. But it’s temporary, right?”
“Yeah, but it’s a long temporary. Six months suspension. Meantime, I’m signing up for all the private duty assignments I can handle, at least until my dad’s estate gets paid out.”
“That can’t be fun.”
“It’s okay,” she shrugged. “Keeps me occupied and the pay is actually better than the hospital. But no benefits.”
“No retirement plan either, huh?”
“My inheritance is going to be my retirement plan.”
Nathan nodded slowly. “So, we didn’t really get to talk on New Year’s Eve.”
“That’s because Princess Stephanie commandeered all your attention.”
“You’re not jealous, are you? I heard you’re involved with Brady Black. Or was that just a rumor?”
“No,” she sighed. “It’s true. But he’s in rehab in Chicago and I’m—” her words trailed off.
He looked at her intently. “That’s gotta be hard.”
Melanie met his gaze and got lost in his eyes. “Really hard,” she mumbled.
He took her hand without thinking. “Do you ever think about what almost happened between us all those years ago.”
“Of course. I think about it a lot.”
“Ever wish you could go back in time?”
Melanie nodded. “If I knew then what I know now, I’d have made a different choice.”
“You mean you would have chosen me?”
“It was a mistake not to,” she said quietly. “I chose the wrong man.”
Nathan moved closer until his lips met Melanie’s. She responded immediately and pulled away almost as fast.
“What’s the matter,” Nathan wanted to know.
“This isn’t smart. We’re in public and too many people know us. We’re both dating other people.”
Nathan looked up and his eyes fell on the entrance to the Salem Inn. “I know where we can go to get some privacy.”

Chapter 459b
While they were getting dressed in the hotel room, Nathan wrapped his arms around Melanie from behind. “When can we do this again?”
“I think maybe never?” she answered, but there was a hint of uncertainty in her reply.
“Huh?”
“You’re dating Stephanie.”
Nathan waved at the air. “Dating, yeah. But it’s totally caszh.”
“Is that what she thinks?” Before Nathan could answer, she added, “And then there’s Brady.”
“You guys aren’t serious, are you?”
She sat down heavily at the foot of the bed. “I love Brady. I really do. And he loves me. But as much as I love him, I’ve had to face reality, that things can never go anywhere.” She got off the bed as Nathan was getting ready to sit down beside her. “Brady has too much baggage, including the part he played in my dad’s death—and it’s going to be a very long time before we’re able to come to terms with everything—if we ever can. I want to be there for him, I really do, but —”
“But you have needs too,” Nathan uttered in a sexy voice. He held Melanie’s chin and kissed her passionately. When the kiss broke, he looked into her eyes and said, “I have regrets too, Mel. I made mistakes too.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, if I knew then what I know now, I’d never have let you go the first time. I wouldn’t have let anyone talk me out of it. I’d have crashed your wedding to Philip and carried you out of there like Richard Gere and Debra Winger in An Officer and a Gentleman.”
With tears in her eyes, she whispered, “I wish you had.”
In an instant, he lifted her in his arms and carried her back to the bed.

As annoying as Stephanie has been, I don’t think she deserves this
Even if it is just casual and no topic of exclusive was discussed, I can’t see him sleeping with Melanie of all people going over well
Also he asked her to try again and promised her it would be different
This seems like the same garbage to me
It’s Melanie he’s always seemed to want or maybe he just wants who he didn’t choose?
Seems like a bit of a creep tbh

Can I say I don’t like Nathan very much! He is treating both Mel and Steph badly. He needs to decide which one he really wants to be with and go for it!!
