Chapter 26a

Philip was discharged the next day and given strict bedrest orders for 24 hours. So while he was upstairs resting, Chloe was in the kitchen downstairs making chicken soup.

For most homes on Marathon Key, the power was restored during the night. At a glance, Philip’s beach house had weathered the storm pretty well, just some window shutter slats and roof shingles blew off. They’d survey the exterior more closely another day.

Parker sat at the counter watching his mother at the stove. “Mommy?”

“Yes, angel,” she said without looking up from the soup she was stirring.

“Uncle Phil isn’t really my uncle, is he?”

Chloe turned off the burner and faced Parker. She had a feeling there was something behind this question beyond the obvious. Calmly, she said, “That’s true. Why do you ask?”

Parker shifted in his barstool so his knees were on the seat and he leaned his elbows on the counter. “See. Teacher was ‘splaining ‘bout families and sisters and brothers and uncles and aunts. Uncle Philip isn’t your brother or Daddy’s brother, so that means he’s not really my uncle.”

Chloe came around the other side of the counter and sat on a barstool next to Parker. “That’s right, angel. We sometimes call people aunt and uncle when they’re like a family member, even if we’re not related by blood,” Chloe explained.

Parker nodded. “That’s what Miss Green said when I told her about Uncle Philip being more like a daddy than an uncle. Most of the kids at school have a daddy and I don’t, even though I kind of do. So, do you think it would be ok if I call uncle Philip daddy instead of uncle?”

Chloe’s eyes widened. This wasn’t where she expected the conversation to go. “You remember your real daddy, right?”

“Sure I do. But it’s been so long. Couldn’t I have another daddy?”

She stroked her son’s hair. She loved how much he loved Philip, and she knew how hard it was when Parker lost Daniel. She also knew you can’t just replace one person with another, but Parker wanted to feel normal. He wanted a father like his friends at school had. And the fact that Parker was expressing his feelings in a healthy way was incredibly important and she wanted to encourage it. “You really love your Uncle Philip, don’t you?”

“Uh huh.”

“And I know he adores you too. I think it would make him very happy if you started calling him daddy. I mean we’ll never forget Daniel. He loved you so much too.”

“You think my first daddy would be okay with me calling someone else my daddy now?”

Overcome with emotion, tears spilled down Chloe’s cheeks as she hugged her son. “I think wherever he is, your Daddy will always love you and he knows you will always love him too. And calling Philip ‘Daddy’ won’t change that. But it will make you both happy and it will make the bond you already have even stronger.”

“So it’s okay?”

“It’s okay.”

Parker leaned away. “Can I go upstairs and tell him now?”

Chloe nodded. “Sure, I think that will make him get well even faster than my chicken soup.”

Awwww! Parker is such a sweetheart. I can only imagine Philip's reaction. I hope that this helps Parker put some of his fears about being left alone to rest for him. That little boy deserves some happiness and normalcy.

Chapter 26b

Parker stood shyly in the doorway of Philip and Chloe’s bedroom. It looked like Philip was sleeping, so he didn’t enter.

Philip stretched out his body and opened his eyes. “Hey, big guy.”

Parker stepped inside. “I’m sorry if I made you fall down.”

Philip’s brow knit. “When did you make me fall down?”

“At the shelter. When I hugged your legs.”

Philip smiled. “You didn’t make me fall down, Parker. Not at all. I was weak from being out on the sea and rescuing people for hours and hours. It had nothing to do with you, honey.” He patted the mattress, inviting Parker to come closer. “I was really glad to see you and your mom. In fact, I stayed strong until I found you. Once I saw you were both okay, then I kind of let go and passed out. Make sense?”

“Uh huh. I think so.” Parker climbed onto his mom’s side of the bed. “I hafta ask you something.”

“Shoot.”

“Is it okay if I call you Daddy?”

Philip’s lips parted. A lump formed in his throat and he was almost at a loss for words. “Um yeah. I’d like that a lot, that is, if it’s okay with your mom.”

“I already asked her. She says it’s okay.”

Smiling broadly, Philip said, “In that case, nothing would make me happier. Come here.” He held out his arms.

“I don’t wanna hurt you.”

“You won’t.” Parker crawled closer and gave Philip a big hug. Philip wrapped Parker in his arms and an incredible warmth washed over him, like nothing he’d ever felt before. A tear rolled down his face as he kissed Parker’s head. “I love you, kiddo.”

“I love you too, Daddy.”

That was a sweet scene. I'm glad Philip reassured Parker that he didn't cause him to faint.

Well i think you know how i feel about it , *sniffs*
Philip deserves this, to finally be the one receiving unconditional love must be huge for him. He’s always been the one giving more than he receives, i see the tables turned and finally he is at the receiving end.
