Chapter 11a
At the club, Chloe was working on refinishing some used tables she had found at a restaurant supply store, changing them from a wood finish to a black laquer finish. Every so often she looked over at Brady who was using paint thinner to remove old wallpaper. She was alternating between working up the courage to make him a proposition and thinking about Parker’s upcoming appointment with the therapist this afternoon. Her stomach turned every time she thought about her poor little angel needing to see a therapist. She had nothing against therapy, but she hated the fact her little boy was suffering from fear and anxiety.
And then there was Philip. He wasn’t sleeping well and was tormented by recurring dreams which, from his description, sounded like a combination of the horrors he endured during the war, and something more current. At least that’s how she interpreted it. She was no therapist, but it sounded like it could be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Now that, she knew something about. Maybe she’d ask Gwen about it later.
With all the turmoil going on at home, this might be the worst time to start a new business venture. Or was she just using Parker and Philip’s situations as an excuse because she was afraid? Her father’s words echoed in her ears. “Seize your opportunities,” he had advised her when she was a teenager. It didn’t make much sense to her at the time, but it resonated with her today.
She knew she needed to take the opportunity to talk to Brady now. Her idea was a good one, maybe even a great one. It would make Philip feel more comfortable, and it would put Chloe in a much better position for her future.
“You okay,” Brady glanced over at her. “You don’t look so good.”
“Why?” She looked down at her attire. “Aren’t coveralls all the rage these days?”
He laughed. “No, I mean you look a little pale.”
She knew it was a case of nerves. “Maybe it’s all the chemical smells in here. I think this place needs more ventilation.”
“Let’s go outside and get some air,” he suggested.
This was it. This was her big opportunity. They went outside and leaned against the building. Chloe took a deep breath.
“Better?” he asked.
“Yes, thanks. Um. Brady, can I talk to you about something?”
“About Philip?”
“No, about you and me,” she said.
He raised his brows. “You’ve got my attention.”
Just blurt it out, Chloe. “I’d like to buy the club from you.”
“With what? Monopoly money? Sorry, I didn’t mean that to sound condescending.”
“That’s fine. You’re right, I don’t have a ton of money saved, so I’d be using future money.”
“Future money? My spidey senses are tingling,” he said. “That sounds risky, from a business perspective.”
“There wouldn't be any risk, really. What I’m trying to say is I want to buy it from you over time, as we make money. I’d pay you a portion of my salary every week or every month. We can work out the terms, but the point is, I’d be buying the club from you the same way you buy a house. It would be like a mortgage.”
“Why? Is this because of Philip?”

No, Brady, it’s because you likely have ulterior motives for buying this club specifically for Chloe. I hope Chloe tells Brady the truth.

I'm so glad Chloe is taking initiative and buying the club from Brady. I honestly don't think it's because of Philip it's because she wants to be an independent woman and business person. Great chapter post more soon!

I'm glad Chloe is trying to buy the club from Brady. I'm not glad by Brady's reaction. Also, if Philip is trying to make some weird deal elsewhere it's going to mess this all up.

Hmm.
On one hand...this seems like a good plan as far as a long-term relationship for Philip and Chloe are concerned. On the other...I’m a little concerned that she’s referencing how this will benefit her in the future as it almost seems that she’s foreseeing a future without Philip. (Trust me, if this were real life I would applaud that she’s trying to provide for her future without depending on a man...but we’re talking about Chloe and Philip here which almost automatically implies massive insecurities on SOMEONE’S part.)
I still think this whole business is super sketchy.

I hope Chloe shares her plan with Philip very soon. He should be happy that she wants to buy the property from Brady.

Thanks everyone for all your great comments and speculations.
In the next episode, Chloe will explain her motivations. AND, she will finally ask Brady the question that's been on everyone's mind!

Chapter 11b
“I’d like to buy the club from you.”
“With what? Monopoly money? Sorry, I didn’t mean that to sound condescending.”
“That’s fine. And you’re right, I don’t have a ton of money saved, so I’d be using future money.”
“Future money? My spidey senses are tingling. That sounds risky.”
“What I’m trying to say, Brady, is I want to buy it from you over time, as we make money. I’d pay you a portion of my salary every week or every month. We can work out the terms, but the point is, I’d be buying the club from you the same way you buy a house. It would be like a mortgage.”
“Why? Is this because of Philip?”
Chloe rolled her eyes. Why did Brady feel the need to keep bringing up Philip? “Can we please leave Philip out of this?” Her tone was a little more irritated than she meant it to be. “This has nothing to do with him. This is about me wanting to gain independence.”
“Independence from me?” Chloe opened her mouth to respond but Brady beat her to it. “I might be open to it. Under the right conditions.”
Uh oh. “What conditions might those be?”
“It’s too open-ended,” he said. “We’d have to draw up a legal agreement. Formalize what your salary will be, anticipated revenue, what percentage you’d pay me, and over what period of time.”
Chloe nodded vigorously. “Yes. Yes. That sounds good, really good.”
“I’ll contact Justin and ask him to draw up a contract,” Brady took out his phone and pressed a few keys.
She was thrilled Brady was open to this, but she was also a little skeptical. “This almost sounds too easy.”
“It doesn’t have to be complicated,” Brady told her. “Trust me, I’ve worked on way bigger deals than this one.”
“Oh I’m certain of that. I just didn’t think you’d agree to it so quickly.” Maybe she shouldn’t have said that out loud. If she was going to play in the big leagues, she’d have to learn to be a little more business-savvy.
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. I just thought it would take more convincing.”
“Don’t sell yourself short. Your original argument was great. Hey, it’s what you want and it’s no skin off my nose, except…”
“I knew there’d be a catch.”
“Not a catch. Just another condition. I’d like to retain a portion of my original investment. Say 10%.”
“Why?”
“Because, I think this place is going to make money and I’d be a fool to pull out entirely. I believe in this thing we’re doing.”
This time, Chloe thought for a minute instead of responding immediately. “I guess that makes sense.”
“You’d end up as the majority owner, Chloe. My stake would be small.”
Chloe smiled. “Thank you, Brady.” He went to hug her, and she held out her hand. “Why don’t we shake on it instead, like a true, professional, business deal.” He took her hand and shook it. “Um.” This suddenly felt a little awkward, so she changed the subject. “So, when does Nicole get back from Arizona?”
“She’s back now.”
“In Salem?? Since when?”
“A few weeks, I think. Why?”
“Weeks?? If she’s been back for weeks, then why aren’t you with—” Chloe’s phone alarm went off. She reached in the pocket of her coveralls. “Oh. It’s two thirty.” She blew some air between her lips. “I need to change my clothes and head over to the school to pick up Parker for his appointment.”

This doesn’t sound like a good deal to me. I figured there’d be a catch. So, Nicole’s been back for a few weeks, eh? Interesting.
