Chapter 175
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
DAVID: Well, this is quite a surprise.
KAYLA: You're telling me. I wasn't expecting to see you again.
DAVID: I was expecting to be here, either.
KAYLA: How long are you in town for?
DAVID: No idea. Depends on how long it takes this leg to get better.
KAYLA: Right. Let me just have a look at your charts.
Kayla took a seat opposite David and Scotty. She opened up a folder she was carrying.
DAVID: So, you're my doctor?
KAYLA: No, actually. Dr. Daniel Jonas will be your doctor. He and I work together regularly, though, so on days when he's off, you'll be seeing me.
DAVID: Gotcha.
Kayla read over her charts.
KAYLA: So, you still ride your motorcycle, I see.
DAVID: Yeah. Julie would prefer that I didn't, but I've gotta have some kind of excitement in my life.
KAYLA: My husband rides, as well. I worry about him, sometimes, but I do enjoy his adventurous spirit so much.
DAVID: Husband? You're married?
Kayla nodded.
KAYLA: It's been a while now. Steve Johnson, that's his name.
DAVID: So, that's why you're nametag says Dr. Kayla Johnson.
KAYLA: That would be it.
DAVID: You know, at one time, I thought that would've been us.
KAYLA: David, that was a long time ago.
DAVID: No, I know. Believe me, I am more than happy being single. After all the stuff Trish and I went through...I'm just enjoying the single life.
KAYLA: That's good. Now, we'll have more time to catch up later, but I think now, the most important thing is that leg of yours. Let's take a look.
David had his leg in a cast and had been using crutches to walk. He lifted his leg slightly. Kayla looked it over.
KAYLA: I see Dr. Kessel put it in a cast, that's good. He sent over your medical records a few days ago.
DAVID: Good.
Kayla looked at some more papers in the folder. She pulled out two x-rays and put them on the light up board to look at them.
KAYLA: I'm sure Dr. Kessel showed you this the other day, but I'd like to take a look at them.
DAVID: Whatever you think's necessary.
Kayla pointed to a line on one of the x-rays.
KAYLA: You see this here? How there's a crack on both of the pictures?
David nodded.
DAVID: Yep.
KAYLA: That's where the bones have broken. After your leg comes out of that cast, you'll need to go to physical therapy to make sure you get complete use of that leg back.
DAVID: Kay, no offense, but how long do I have to keep this freakin' thing on for?
KAYLA: A few weeks, at the last. Probably longer. I'd like you to come back regularly, about once a week, so that Dr. Jonas and I can keep an eye on it.
DAVID: Is it that serious?
KAYLA: Not yet, but we don't want it to be. Right now, it's just a precaution. After a few weeks, once we get a better idea of how much damage we're dealing with here, we'll probably expand the time between visits. Any questions?
DAVID: No, I think we're good.
KAYLA: Very good.
DAVID: It's good to see you again, Kayla.
KAYLA: It's good to see you, too. We'll have more time to catch up later, I promise, but right now, I've got other patients. I do want you to meet Steve sometime, though. I think you two would get along.
DAVID: Yeah, okay.
KAYLA: I'll see you later. Bye, Scotty.
SCOTTY: I'll be back to work soon, Kayla.
Kayla smiled and left the room.
DAVID: She's barely aged. She's the same woman I met all those years ago.
SCOTTY: Except she's married.
DAVID: True. Anyway, let's get outta here.
SCOTTY: You got it. I'll take you to the Brady Pub next so we can have lunch.
DAVID: Sounds good to me.
