Chapter 170
MARQUETTE GENERAL HOSPITAL – MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN
Scotty sat in the chair next to David's bed. Doug and Julie had gone to get something to eat.
DAVID: You know, you could've gone with your grandparents, Scott.
SCOTTY: I know. But, it's been so long since it's just been you and me. Plus, I want to hear what the doctor's gonna say when he comes in.
DAVID: Makes sense.
SCOTTY: I'm glad you decided to come to Salem with us.
DAVID: I know. Since it means I get to spend more time with my boy, I am, too.
SCOTTY: Plus, you'll get to spend more time with grandma and grandpa.
David rolled his eyes.
DAVID: Scott...I love you, dude. And I love that you have such a great relationship with your grandmother. I really do. I think that's wonderful. The thing is, I don't have a great relationship with her.
SCOTTY: Why not? I mean, for years, I could never figure out why you and grandma don't get along.
DAVID: Dude, you saw what she was like the other day when you guys got here. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother, we've just never seen eye to eye on much. And that's okay. Not everyone has a great relationship with their parents. It happens. But, there is one thing that she and I do agree on.
SCOTTY: What's that?
DAVID: That you're the best thing that happened to me.
Scotty took David's hand. Moments later, a young man walked into the room.
DAVID: Dr. Kessel.
Dr. Kessel was around Scotty's age, with sandy blonde hair.
KESSEL: Good afternoon, David. How are you doing?
DAVID: I'll be better once my freakin' leg is healed, but I'm doing okay. This is my son, Scott.
Scotty stood up and shook Dr. Kessel's hand.
SCOTTY: Dr. Scott Banning. Nice to meet you.
KESSEL: Dr. Adrian Kessel. Nice to meet you, too.
Dr. Kessel looked at his chart.
KESSEL: So, David, how is the pain? Are you in any discomfort?
DAVID: It's manageable. Very minor. Probably just from laying in this bed all day.
KESSEL: Very good. I see the cuts have mostly healed. Just need to take a look at your stitches.
David pulled up one side of his hospital gown. Dr. Kessel looked at the stitches up David's left side. He nodded and wrote something down on the pad.
KESSEL: All right. Now, before I can discharge you, I need to know if you've found someone who you can stay with, or who can stay with you.
DAVID: That's why Scott's here, actually. I'm going to stay with him and my parents in a town called Salem.
KESSEL: Salem? I'm not familiar with it.
SCOTTY: It's about an hour or so outside of Chicago.
KESSEL: I see. All right, well, everything looks to be in good enough shape. So I will begin the process of releasing you.
DAVID: Thanks, doc.
KESSEL: No problem. I will have some forms for you to fill out, so I'll have one of the nurses bring them to you shortly.
DAVID: Sounds good.
Dr. Kessel shook hands with Scotty and David.
KESSEL: Nice meeting you.
SCOTTY: You too.
The doctor walked out.
DAVID: Thank goodness. I can't wait to get out of here.
