Chapter 176
SALEM COUNTY JAIL
Deimos was lying on his bed, thinking about what had happened a few days previous.
SALEM COUNTY JAIL – FLASHBACK
EREBUS: And just how exactly do you plan to do this?
DEIMOS: You'll see.
EREBUS: No, I'm tired of waiting. I want answers, now!
DEIMOS: Ssh! Do you want the guards to hear you? Just be patient.
EREBUS: Patience is something I have very little of.
DEIMOS: Well, it's a good trait to have, seeing as we'll probably both be here for a while.
Deimos nodded behind Erebus. He looked behind him and saw a guard carrying a food tray.
GUARD: Your final meal before transfer.
The guard slid the tray under the bars. Erebus set it down on the bed behind him.
DEIMOS: What about mine?
GUARD: You'll get yours when it's time, inmate. You buddy here is gonna be heading out of here, soon, so he's got priority.
Erebus stared at the guard. After a moment, the guard walked away.
EREBUS (under his breath): Smug little git.
Unseen by Erebus, Deimos walked over to Erebus' tray. He pulled a small capsule out of his pocket. He opened the capsule and poured the contents into the mashed potatoes. Then, he stirred it around. By the time Erebus turned around, Deimos had finished. SALEM COUNTY JAIL
DEIMOS (thinking): Couldn't have worked any better, if you ask me.
SALEM HIGH
Ciara and Claire were putting their things in their lockers.
CIARA: So, tomorrow's the big day, huh?
Claire nodded.
CLAIRE: Yep. The Crucible.
CIARA: I'm actually really excited. I love the Salem Witch Trials!
CLAIRE: So do I! It's so fascinating how so many people believed a group of teenage girls that they were being attacked by the spirit of witches.
CIARA: I know, right? It's ridiculous!
CLAIRE: Yeah.
Claire and Ciara laughed.
CIARA: How's rehearsals been?
CLAIRE: Pretty good. Final dress rehearsal's tonight.
CIARA: Makes sense.
CLAIRE: And thankfully, you-know-who hasn't been causing any more trouble.
CIARA: Well, no. I mean, she wouldn't be, would she? She had to drop out 'cause of the baby.
CLAIRE: What? No, I mean Noelle.
CIARA: Oh, right. You mean Noelle was causing trouble?
CLAIRE: Not for a while. Not since Chase and I both told her to back off. I'm just kind of worried. She better not try anything during the play tomorrow night.
CIARA: Well, if she does, there'll be more than one person looking for her. Me, Henri, Alex, Theo, Chase...probably Joey, as well.
CLAIRE: Well, we'll just hope it doesn't come to that.
CIARA: Exactly.
The girls closed their lockers and started walking in the direction of the theatre.
CIARA: Besides, if she does try anything, it's more likely to be against me.
CLAIRE: What makes you say that?
CIARA: Because she's more angry at me than anyone else. I mean, yeah, she's mad at a bunch of us. But she openly told me that I'm the one she genuinely hates.
CLAIRE: Why?
CIARA: Who knows? I mean, I tried to contact her over the last year. I don't know why she didn't get my e-mails or texts, but she's convinced that I abandoned her.
CLAIRE: But that's crazy.
CIARA: Well, that's what we seem to be dealing with, here.
CLAIRE: Sounds like it. Look, whatever happens, we've got each other's backs.
CIARA: Of course.
Ciara and Claire hugged. They are now outside the theatre.
CIARA: Well, good luck. I'll see you on opening night.
CLAIRE: Thanks.
Claire walked into the theatre.
