Chapter 8

SALEM PLACE
Shawn-D was trying his best to wake up both Jan and Belle. So far, he was unsccuessful.
SHAWN-D: Come on! Where are they? They should be here by now!
Shawn-D tried with Belle again, with little effect. Quite soon, he heard a pair of sirens and saw the flashing lights. Two ambulances pulled up.
SHAWN-D: Oh, thank god!

JAN'S MIND
Meanwhile, Jan was still in her dream. The other Jan smiled.
JAN 2: You don't believe me, do you?
JAN: How can I? What you're saying...it doesn't even make sense.
JAN 2: No? I suppose it wouldn't, to you. But it will.
JAN: What do you mean?
JAN 2: I mean, you're about to get your whole life back. Everything you ever wanted.
JAN: I still don't understand.
JAN 2: It's simple, really. I remember everything. You barely remember your life beyond the age of fifteen. But I can give you your memory back. There's only two little things you have to do. First, you have to want your memory back. The good parts, and the bad; and believe me, there's a lot of that.
JAN: Okay. I can do that. What's the second thing?
JAN 2: Oh, nothing much. I'll give you your memory back if you make sure that Belle doesn't make it out of this alive.

SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Jan sat bolt upright.
JAN: No!
By the time she had woken up, she was already at the hospital.

OUTSIDE THE DIMERA MANSION
André helped Cassie and Rex climb out of the mouth of the tunnel. Chad, Rolf, Bart and Peter were already out.
CASSIE: Thanks, Tony.
ANDRE: Not a problem.
REX: I'm just glad you came back for us.
ANDRE: Of course I would. Why wouldn't I come back for my two children?
Chad gazed from Cassie and Rex to André.
CHAD: Children?! You...you mean you guys are his children?
ANDRE: They are, indeed.
REX: Adopted children.
CASSIE: But he's been with us so long that it feels like he really is our father.
ANDRE: Besides, Chad, you of all people should know that family isn't always blood.
Cassie hugged André.
CHAD: I just don't believe this. I don't believe that you two are the spawn of André DiMera and you don't even get it!
ANDRE: Oh, how many times? It's Tony!
CHAD: I don't believe you! Now I knew Tony, and he never acted anything like you! Maybe you look like him, but you're everything he despised about the DiMera family! You would have disgusted him, and you disgust me!
Moving quickly, André pulled a sword from beneath his shirt and put the blade at Chad's neck.
ANDRE: Now, now. Is that any way to speak to your eldest brother?

Ooh this is great! I can't wait to see what Jan does!

Poor Cassie and Rex are so deluded. Will the sword antics convince them?

Uh oh. Sounds like it may get a tad bit bumpy for Jan, Shaun, & Belle.

I think the fumes from the tunnels may have gotten to Cassie & Rex. Hopefully some fresh air, and they wise up to Tony Andre's antics soon.

Chapter 9

SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Claire was sitting in the waiting room, among other people, waiting to hear something about Chase's condition. As she did, she flashed back to an earlier time in her life.

A HOSPITAL IN AFRICA – FLASHBACK
During the time that Belle, Shawn-D and Claire spent traveling around the world on the Fancy Face IV, they stopped in Africa to visit Steve and Kayla while Kayla was helping Bill at his hospital. Claire, who was about six at the time, was sitting under a table, trying not to be seen. Steve walked in the room and looked around. He didn't have to look very far. He sat down on the floor across from Claire.
STEVE: Hey, bear cub.
Claire looked up at Steve.
STEVE: Whatcha doin' down here?
CLAIRE: Hiding.
STEVE: From what?
CLAIRE: Mommy and daddy and Auntie Kay say I need a shot. But, I don't want a shot!
STEVE: Oh, I see. Shots are pretty scary, huh?
Claire nodded.
STEVE: Hey, can I let you in on a little secret? Grown ups don't like getting shots, either. Or giving them.
CLAIRE: Even you?
STEVE: Oh, yeah. Even me. Especially me. But, if you want to grow big and strong, sometimes you have to do things you don't wanna do. You wanna grow up to be big and strong, don't you?
Claire nodded.
STEVE: I'm gonna show you somethin', okay?
CLAIRE: What?
STEVE: Have you ever heard of courage?
CLAIRE: Yeah. But, what is courage?
STEVE: Courage is kinda like being brave, even when something can be really scary.
CLAIRE: Cool!
STEVE: Yeah! I wanna show you what the word courage looks like, okay?
Claire nodded. Steve made the sign for courage.
STEVE: Courage.
He then spent the next few minutes teaching Claire how to sign “courage”.
STEVE: Now, you think you can have some courage and get this shot for your Uncle Steve?
CLAIRE: I guess. But, it's still scary.
STEVE: I know it is, pumpkin. But, courage isn't about not being scared. Courage is about facing your fears, even when you are scared.
CLAIRE: Okay. I'll try.
STEVE: That's my girl. Come on.
Steve and Claire got up, and Steve brought her back to the room where Shawn-D, Kayla and Belle were waiting. Claire ran into Belle's lap.
CLAIRE: Mommy!
BELLE: Hey, Claire Bear.
KAYLA (whispering): Everything okay?
Steve nodded. Kayla got her equipment together and started rubbing Claire's forearm with an alcohol swab.
KAYLA: All right. Claire, I promise, this will only be like a tiny little pinch. Are you ready?
Claire gulped. She looked at Steve, who made the sign for courage again, then she nodded. Kayla gave Claire the shot. Claire shut her eyes, tight. But, after a moment, Kayla took out the needle, put on a bandaid and Claire opened her eyes.
KAYLA: There. All done.
Belle hugged Claire.
BELLE: Claire, I am so proud of you! You did so good!
SHAWN-D: You were really brave, Claire Bear.
CLAIRE: Thanks. Uncle Steve helped me.

SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
CLAIRE (thinking): That's what I've gotta do. I need to have courage. Chase will get through this. He has to. I just wish Uncle Steve were here now.
Aiden sat down next to her. He handed her a cup of water.
CLAIRE: Thanks.
AIDEN: You're welcome. Any news on Chase?
Claire nodded.
CLAIRE: No, but I can tell he'll be all right. I just have this feeling.

Chapter 10

SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Hope followed in a team of medics as they wheeled Roman in on a stretcher. Scotty walked over.
SCOTTY: Roman?
Hope nodded.
HOPE: The cop car we were in toppled over. Roman was projected out through the windshield.
Scotty nodded.
SCOTTY: Get him into the OR!
The medics wheeled Roman away.
SCOTTY: We're gonna do the best we can.
HOPE: I know you will.
SCOTTY: You need to get checked out, though. You've just been in a major accident, and you've got several visible cuts. Kayla's doing check ups in Room 149.
HOPE: Okay. I'll get checked out.
Hope went one way as Scotty went to the OR. Meanwhile, Joey had just sat down next to J.J.
JOEY: Hey.
J.J.: Hey yourself.
JOEY: You get caught in the explosion, too?
J.J.: Yeah. Paige got a worse, though. Her leg was caught underneath a table.
JOEY: Ouch! I'm sorry, dude!
J.J.: She'll be okay. She has to be.
Joey nodded.
J.J.: Anyway, what about you? I'm guessing you're here with Jade?
JOEY: No way! After what she pulled at the Last Blast, I want nothing to do with her! I just figured I'd come and see what the situation is. Plus, my mom's a doctor here.
J.J.: Makes sense.
Daniel walked out of the OR. He wiped his brow. J.J. stood up.
J.J.: Daniel.
Daniel walked over to J.J.
J.J.: What's going on?
DANIEL: Thankfully, we were able to get to Paige before any major damage could be done. She'll have to wear a boot for a few weeks, and will most likely be in some pain for a while. But, on the whole, she will be fine.
J.J. let out a huge sigh of relief.
J.J.: Oh, thank god! Daniel, thank you so much!
J.J. gave Daniel a hug.
DANIEL: No problem. Just doing my job. Now, we need to catch up, and I'm sorry we haven't done that earlier. But, I have more patients.
J.J.: Hey, go do what you need to do. Can I go see her?
DANIEL: She's resting right now, but I know that that's not gonna stop you. So, go on. Room 174.
J.J.: Thank you!
J.J. ran off to Paige's room. Daniel greeted another stretcher. One occupied by Belle.
DANIEL: What's the status?
MEDIC: Her condition was unresponsive. Possible head injury. We're not sure other than that.
DANIEL: Get her into the OR.
Shawn-D walked up as the medics took Belle away.
SHAWN-D: Daniel?
DANIEL: We're going to do the best we can. We will save Belle, I promise.
SHAWN-D: You have to.
DANIEL: We will.
Daniel walked away. Meanwhile, Jade walked up to Joey.
JADE: Joey, thank god you're here!
She sat down in the chair next to Joey.

I think I was as relieved as JJ that Paige is going to be okay.

I hope Belle is okay too!

Let's see if Jade can have any empathy for any of the blast victims. Somehow I doubt it.

Thank goodness Paige will be okay. I feel bad for the doctors after a catastrophe like this one.
