Chapter 26 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL MATT: Satan, Eric has been through enough! Leave him alone! NicDevil laughed NICDEVIL: Oh, priest, he hasn't been through nearly enough yet. MATT: Why of all people make him suffer? NICDEVIL: Two reasons. One: my host. The person who inhabits this body doesn't like Eric very much right now. MATT: I know Nicole. She might be upset with Eric, but she would never want him to come to harm. NICDEVIL: Are you going to let me finish? As I was saying, the other reason is because I can get more work done on him than I can on you. You see, the reason I wouldn't choose you as my victim yet, is that you're too strong in your convictions. But, with Eric, well, he's having doubts. Doubts that I can play on. MATT: But, I was already your victim, hence the hospital room. NICDEVIL: You were too close to the truth. With you out of action, it will be easier for me to get to the fallen priest. MATT: You'll never win, Satan! NICDEVIL: Oh, yes I. And there's nothing you can do about it. You won't be able to stop me this time, priest. NicDevil put out a hand. Father Matt began choking. Slowly, he drifted off into a coma. NicDevil heard someone coming. She quickly morphed into a fly and flew out of the room the moment the door was opened. ST. LUKE'S Eric woke up in one of the pews. He had a strange feeling. He knew that he hadn't gone to sleep there. But where had he gone to sleep? And how had he gotten to the church in the meantime? Then, his phone rang. He picked it up. ERIC: Hello? Pause. ERIC: No, this is Eric Brady. Pause. ERIC: Oh, hi. Yes, I was the one that called. Pause. ERIC: Oh. You're sure about this? There's abaolutely no one who can do this? Pause. ERIC: Well, that's inconvenient. Pause. ERIC: No, I couldn't. I'm not a priest anymore. Pause. ERIC: Okay. Thanks for calling. Eric put down his phone. He sat down. |

Chapter 27 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Daniel had heard one of the machines beeping from Father Matt's room. He was going towards it when he was stopped by Anne. ANNE: What's your hurry? DANIEL: Patient. ANNE: It can wait. You and I have more important things to discuss. DANIEL: No, it really can't. ANNE: Yes, it really can. Because I have a few questions for you, doctor. Such as: why is it that Theresa hasn't been getting as many hours as she should be? DANIEL: Don't know. Don't care. Not my department. ANNE: Well, I figure since Jennifer is in charge of her department, that you'd know. Seeing as you and Jennifer hit the sheets on a semi-regular basis. DANIEL: What Jennifer and I do in our private lives is none of your business. Now, I have a patient to get to... A nurse ran up. NURSE: Dr. Jonas, the patient in room 333 has gone into a coma. DANIEL: I'll be right there. ANNE: Well, look at that. Another patient nearly lost his life due to your negligence, Then, they both heard someone clear their throat. They looked and saw Tony DiMera. TONY: Mind if I interrupt for a moment? ANNE: Who the hell are you? TONY: Count Antony DiMera. I was put on the hospital board a while back. And, the board thinks that I should now be head of HR. DANIEL: Not that it's not good to see you again, Tony, but what can we do for you? TONY: You, Dr. Jonas, can attend your patient. As for you, Ms. Bauer, come with me. I'd like to see you in my office. Daniel went to check on Father Matt. Anne followed Tony into his office. They got in and closed the door. TONY: Sit. Anne sat down. As did Tony, he put his glasses on and started flipping through some papers. TONY: Miss Bauer, I've been looking through the previous head of HR's notes, and your track record speaks for itself. ANNE: Thank you. TONY: Oh, don't thank me yet. I'm not finished. ANNE: Okay. Tony took off his glasses and looked Anne in the eye. TONY: You're fired. |

Chapter 28 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ANNE: What? TONY: You're fired. ANNE: You can't fire me! TONY: Oh, but you see I can. And I did. I'm the new head of HR. Which, as you're also in HR, makes me your boss. ANNE: Why am I getting fired? TONY: There's a list of reasons. Let's see. Forgery, theft, negligence, causing doctors to become distracted and lose a patient, hiring without permission of the board, fraudulent activities, attempting with malicious intent to get a fellow staff member fired. Shall I go on? ANNE: You're doing this out of spite, aren't you? What, did Jennifer put you up to this? TONY: No, Anne, she did not. You see, Jennifer is not like you. ANNE: You won't get away with this! I'll be back before next week. TONY: Not at this hospital you won't. I'm sorry, Anne, but you did this to yourself. If you had just done your job and hadn't meddled in the affairs of others, this wouldn't have happened. ANNE: Aha! I was right! This is about Jennifer! TONY: No, this is about being more concerned in other people's lives than you were about your job. Out of the 425 days you've worked her, 27 of them were actually spent working. The rest were spent on making everyone else's life miserable. Now, please, get out. Anne stood up and walked out. ST. LUKE'S Eric was again on the phone. ERIC: Are you absolutely sure? Pause. ERIC: Don't we have back-ups for these situations? Pause. ERIC: I see. Pause. ERIC: I see. Pause ERIC: Well, no, it's not. But, that's the way it is. Pause. ERIC: Okay. Thank you. Eric put his phone away, He sat in a pew, looked at the cross, and folded his hands. ERIC: Lord, I know I asked for a sign, and You've given me one. Truthfully, I had other plans. But, Your will is what I must do, not mine. This is going to be very difficult. Please, keep watch over me, guide me. And keep watch over the people of Salem in these troubling times. In Your name, Amen. Eric stood up. ERIC: I guess that's it. I have to be a priest again. TO BE CONTINUED FORGIVE ME, FATHER, will return Thursday, 12/26.
