Chapter 1 ST. LUKE'S Eric sat in the church office, playing his words to Nicole over and over in his mind. Now that he knew the truth, that it was Kristen, and not Nicole, who had raped him, he knew how horrible his words sounded. Father Matt entered. MATT: You wished to see me, Father Eric? ERIC: Father Matt, please sit down. Father Matt sat across from Eric. ERIC: I have come to a decision recently. Given what has happened lately, I feel that it is only right that I step down from my position as a priest. MATT: Eric... ERIC: Please, don't think I am making this decision lightly. I have thought long and hard about this. And, I'm very sorry, Father Matt, but I have to do this. MATT: I see. Though Zi am not happy with your decision, it is, of course, yours to make. ERIC: Thank you, Father. Eric took off his clerical collar and handed it to Father Matt. ERIC: It has been a privilege serving with you. And please, say a prayer for me. MATT: I will. Eric stood up and walked out. Father Matt looked at the clerical collar Eric had handed him. MATT: These are dark times. And I fear, for Salem, it is only going to get worse. As Eric walked out, the crisp fall air hit him. There was a slight drizzle. He felt a chill go down his back, one that he couldn't explain. And he had the feeling that he was making a mistake. BRADY PUB Nicole sat at the counter of the Pub. She didn't have anything in front of her. She was just staring off into space. Something was happening. Something was changing inside of her.

Chapter 2 ST. LUKE'S Eric walked into the confessional. He sat down and made the sign of the cross over his heart. ERIC: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It's been two days since my last confession. Eric took a deep breath. MATT: What's troubling you, my son? ERIC: I have been judgmental. And in doing so, I have falsely accused someone of a crime they did not commit. At the time, I didn't know that I was doing it. However, please, don't see that as justification. I have also committed the sin of pride, which ties into the first two. I am sorry for these and all the sins of my past life. MATT: For your penance, my son, say three "Our Father"s and three "Hail Mary"s, one for each type of sin. However, you also must seek out the person, or people, whom you have wronged. Make peace with them. It is written in the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventeenth chapter: "Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' forgive him.". That is what you need. To repent and be forgiven. Now, do you have an Act of Contrition? ERIC: I do. Eric folded his hands. ERIC: O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen. MATT: Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, announce the grace and forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. In His stead and by His command, I forgive you for all your sins. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. ERIC: For His mercy endures forever. Amen. Eric made the sign of the cross over his heart. BRADY PUB Eric walked in. Nicole was sitting at the counter. He walked over to her and sat down next to her. ERIC: Nicole, we need to talk.
