THE LAKE HOUSE
Chloe was cooing into baby Faith’s crib, rubbing the little girl’s tummy and laughing at the baby’s toothless grin.
Faith had fine blondish hair, a full head of it, with darker strands here and there. Her olive skin was silky and clear. Her round face had a slight double chin, which told Chloe she was healthy. Her beautiful smile was accentuated by dimples, which told the world she was a Kiriakis through and through.
Speaking of Kiriakis, Chloe’s cell phone rang and Chloe picked it up off the changing table and looked at the display.
Chloe: Hello Mr Kiriakis. Philip [on the phone]: Ah, so we’re being formal. Hello Mrs Kiriakis. How are you and the Kiriakis offspring today? Chloe laughed. Chloe: We’re fine. I was just changing Faith. Philip: Don’t change her too much. I like her fine just the way she is. Chloe: I’d be happy to wait and let you change her when you get home. Philip: Fine by me. Say, did we get mail yet? I’m expecting a letter. Chloe: I don’t know. I haven’t looked yet. Philip: It’s not important. It’ll wait until I get home. Chloe: And when will that be? Philip: By 5:30, give or take. Chloe: We’ll be counting the minutes. Philip: I love you sweetie. Chloe: I love you more. Faith squealed. Chloe: Did you hear that, Philip? Philip: She sounds like she’s rehearsing for an opera. Chloe: I think she was saying “I seriously doubt that.” Philip: Hey, that’s my line. Chloe: I’ll let you say it later. Tonight. When we’re alone. Philip: Mmm, I can hardly wait.
After getting off the phone, Chloe carried Faith out to the mailbox at the end of the winding path that led from the front door to the gate. The baby squirmed in Chloe’s arms.
Chloe: Daddy is expecting mail. Want to see if you got mail too, cupcake? Chloe opened the mailbox with her free hand and retrieved the mail. Back inside the house, she set Faith down on a blanket on the floor next to Wesley, who was watching a DVD called Your Tiny Maestro.
Chloe kneeled on the floor near the kids and started sorting through the mail. Her stomach turned when she saw a letter with a United States Marine Corps seal on the outer envelope.
She looked at her children and the past four months flashed before her. All the anxiety she felt over Philip leaving on an assignment for the Marines, being incommunicado for weeks, almost missing Faith’s birth.... No, not this time. They were never going there again, Chloe decided. She crumpled the envelope, got up and went over to the trash can in the kitchen. She tore the letter into pieces and tossed it into the garbage.
To be continued...

Jkjpatch, I love your version of Philip and Chloe! They are so cute together! Looks like Chloe may be headed for trouble. I wonder what the letter said? Thanks for the chapter, jkjpatch! This is a great story already!

Yikes. I am guessing it was a commendation or something for Philip. This isn't good. If it were me I would read it BEFORE I ripped it to shreds.

Uh oh! Phillip told her he was expecting it. This wasn't some piece of mail or phone call that showed up unexpectedly like last time.
Tampering with mail that isn't addressed to you is a crime and I can see Chloe headed for big trouble for tampering with mail from the Federal Government.

I still wish Chloe read the letter before getting rid of it. I so want to know what it said. Philip did not seem to be dreading getting it so maybe it was an award.

THE LAKE HOUSE, A FEW HOURS LATER
Chloe and the kids were on the floor in the living room. She was teaching Wesley to sing “Getting to Know You” from The King and I when they heard the sound of the garage door going up. Wesley started jumping up and down.
Chloe: Calm down, angel. Wait until Daddy comes in from the garage.
Philip entered the house through the garage, tie loosened, holding his briefcase in one hand and his jacket draped over his other arm. He set down his belongings when Wesley ran to him and hugged his leg. He lifted his son in the air. Philip: Hey there big guy. What are you up to? Wesley: Hope you like me. Philip: Well of course I like you. I love you! Philip planted a kiss on Wesley’s cheek as Chloe walked over and planted a kiss on Philip’s lips. Chloe: Hope you like me. Philip: Huh? You too? Chloe: That’s a line from Getting to Know You. I was teaching Wesley the lyrics. Philip: What happened to “Henry the Eighth I Am”? Wesley wriggled in Philip’s arms and Philip put him down so he could run and play. Chloe: I think he’s tired of singing that song. Philip: Good. That makes two of us. It plays in my head all freaking day and night. “I’m Enery the Eighth I am .... Second verse, same as the first. And third. And forth.” Chloe: Don’t quit your day job. Philip: Very funny. And how’s my little princess? Chloe: She’s asleep over there. He tilted his head to look at his daughter sleeping on her blanket. He went over and crouched next to the sleeping child, stroking her baby fine hair. Philip: She’s as cute as hell. Look how much she looks like you, sleeping like this. Chloe: I guess she does. Philip: I’m gonna have to find my old baseball bat. Beat her boyfriends off with a stick. Chloe: Philip! Philip: Well, I certainly took my share of beatings from girlfriends’ fathers ... wives’ fathers. Chloe: That’s because you deserved it. Philip: Nice. Say, where’s the mail? Chloe: Um. It’s on the kitchen counter where it usually is. Philip: Okay okay, can we stop making fun of me? Chloe chuckled, but got a frightened look on her face as she watched Philip sit down at the kitchen table and look through the mail. His brow knit as he opened one of the envelopes and wrinkled his nose. Philip: Something smells bad. Like garbage. Chloe: Oh, um, could be diapers. I guess you need to take the trash out. Philip: What the hell happened to this letter? It looks like it was pasted together. Chloe: Argh. Okay fine. I confess. I tore it up and threw it away. Philip: You did what??? Chloe, this is a letter from the Marine Corps. It’s an official government document. Chloe: I know. That’s why I pasted it back together. I didn’t want to do jail time for tampering with the mail. And with you being drafted again, and me in jail, our children would end up being orphans. A smile slowly spread across Philip’s lips. He was about to laugh until he saw Chloe pouting and her eyes filled with tears. He reached for Chloe’s hand and pulled her into his lap. Philip: Sweetie, don’t you think you’re overreacting just a little? Chloe: No. I can’t stand the thought of them being orphaned. If they were to end up in an orphanage like I did .... Philip: They won’t. That’s not gonna happen. Look, even if something did happen to us, Nicole and Brady are their godparents, and Bo and Hope agreed to look after them too. So stop worrying. Chloe: I can’t! Look at everything we’ve been through over the past few years. I keep waiting for the next shoe to drop, for Wesley to get kidnapped, for me to get stuffed into a sarcophagus, for you to get shot, for Faith to turn out to be someone else’s daughter. Philip: Excuse me??? Are you saying... Chloe saw the worried look on Philip’s face and she cupped his chin. Chloe: No, silly, there’s no chance of that and you know it. Philip: Well, I do have a DNA test that proves she's mine. ... Chloe, are you really worried that something else is going to happen to us? Chloe: The sky’s been falling for quite a while now. Philip: Yeah, but my parents are dead. Chloe: Vivian’s still alive. Philip: Vivian. My other crazy mother. Second verse same as the first. Sweetie, she’s in prison. Chloe: So were your parents. Philip held Chloe tighter. Philip: Let’s talk about the letter for a minute. Chloe: You’re going, aren’t you? You’re leaving us again.
To be continued ...
