I'm really not shocked by the news of any of these firings especially Matt's. I have been speculating for months now that Jack and Jen would get a quick reuniting and end up being shipped off to London when Matt's and Missy's contracts were up this year. I'm kinda surprised though that Missy wasn't one of those that was fired but who knows maybe TPTB are going to keep Missy around until her contract is up in September for Abigail and then she will be let go then or since it doesn't sound like these are going to be the only actors that are going to be getting fired then maybe next week there will be more news on some other actors who have been let go. As much as I love seeing Jack on and like having Matt on Days, his return has been kinda pointless. The writers obviously didn't want to write Jack any kind of decent story and weren't invested in Jack's character at all. Part of the reason for that was probably because Tomlin was the one who brought Jack back to the show before he left and MarDar just got stuck with him and really had no plans to do anything with his character since the only reason he was brought back was for Jennifer. Matt couldn't have been working for cheap so I am glad to see that TPTB was smart enough to let him go and free up his salary if they weren't going to use him. As popular as Jack is there are some other younger characters that would make more sense to have on the show like Philip, Chloe, Belle and Shawn that could interact with some of the older characters on the show since 3 out of 4 of these characters are children of legacy characters and there would be more storyline possibilities for them and their parents then for Jack and Jen.
I'm sorry to say this since I know that quite a few people on this board really like Carrie but IMO both Carrie and Austin should have never been brought back. They were such a big waste of airtime and salaries. Carrie and Austin have never been really interesting as a couple unless there is an interloper in their relationship and I for one can only watch so many of the same storylines where Carrie is cheating on Austin because they are having problems with their marriage. I know a lot of people find Carrie a lot more interesting with Rafe than Austin and would like to see Cafe together but really there is not too much that can be done with Cafe after they get together except for putting an interloper into their relationship to break them up. Carrie is not a very interesting standalone character and the only time she is remotely interesting when she is not in a relationship is when she is fighting with Sami and I for one could care less about Carrie and Sami's troubled relationship. I'm really glad that both Carrie and Austin will be gone and I hope that TPTB bring back someone more interesting like Phloe to replace them.
Madison has never been a character that I have been able to find interesting which is a real shame because I have always enjoyed watching Sarah Brown on General Hospital. She is a really talented actress and it is a real shame that she wasn't given a more interesting character to play on Days and it also really sucks that she was thrown into this whole insta-love relationship with Brady that was almost impossible to root for them to succeed in. Maybe if the writers would have taken their time to develop Madison more before they paired her off with Brady then the character would have been received better by the general audience. Also it really didn't help matters that she was stuck with Brady when most of his fans either want to see him with Chloe or Nicole and can't accept him being paired with anyone else on the show. Now with Madison gone I am wondering if Brady is going to be gone too soon or if he is going to be kept around to be put back into Nicole's orbit now that Chloe is gone. There really isn't anyone else on the show that he could be paired up with. I don't want to see Brady leave and I hope he is not going to be one of the other actors who is going to be fired.
There is supposed to be some more firings soon and I wouldn't be surprised if Missy, James Reynolds (now that Lexie is going to be gone), Joe Mascolo (because he wants to retire on his own), the kid who plays Theo, Ian Buchanan, Lisa Rinna, Shawn Christian, Molly Burnett (because she doesn't renew her contract), Camilla Barnes, and Casey Diedrick all end up leaving the show during this reset.
I really feel bad for all these actors who were fired and I hate to see anyone lose their job in this economy and I really hope that all these actors are able to land on their feet and get other acting jobs elsewhere since no one deserves to lose their job but at the same time TPTB is only doing what they feel is best for Day's future so that a whole lot of other actors don't end up out of jobs if the show gets cancelled. I wish the best of luck to all of these actors because they are all so very talented.

@karebr, I didn't look it up but I'm nearly positive that Jack was one of the returns for the "reset", meaning that MarDar are the ones who brought Jack back. Regardless, messing with an 80s supercouple is always bad news. It is the one storyline that we know for a fact got rewrites and I suspect it is the main reason that MarDar are no more. Like I've said many times before there are worse things that can befall a character/couple than being offscreen. Jack got underused but Jennifer is the one nearly ruined from this return. I fully expect she will be making an exit soon. You bring up a good point about the actress' contract ending. I suspect where possible TPTB will choose to let actors/actresses stay to the end of their contract rather than firing them right away... and just because these were the first set announced doesn't mean that they will all leave at the same time or even that they will be the first characters to exit. September is not that far away so they could easily have Jack & Jennifer leaving together even by simply letting Missy's contract run out. I don't think they are going to fire D&D again and therefore I don't think Brady is going anywhere. He is a Black & a Kiriakis (and techinically a Brady & Dimera though apparently no one at Days bothers to remember that) and versatile enough to work in many storylines. Billie is a given to go IMO because she was always intended to be short term anyway and with both Jennifer and Billie gone and too many men in his age category already I expect Daniel to go as well. I think Gabi is a given to go but I think they will hold on to Melanie and Chad for now and see how other changes work out first. I don't think they will fire James Reynolds but I do think he will either become recurring or remain on contract with a very low episode count guarantee. Other potential departures are likely to be an either/or situation. I suspect that either Stefano or Ian will go and regardless of which one it is, I think there is a probability that James Scott’s contract will not be renewed. NBC wasn’t going to renew it last year but he got a reprieve and I doubt that will happen twice. Two other possibilities that could count as “epic” but I think would be temporary are Bope and Sami. I’m thinking Bope because it could be a way to free up a lot of money fast and then they could be returned with a lower guarantee of episode counts. And Sami because the character could use the rest and so could the show. It would disappoint me personally but I think it could be a good move for the show and the character … and it wouldn’t be permanent. I'm sorry to say this since I know that quite a few people on this board really like Carrie … Oh my, how was that ever allowed to happen…

If they are getting rid of all these people and possibly more, who are they gonna base the show around?? Days' contract with NBC expires in September and it may not be on past that if they can't get good storylines going. I honestly haven't watched Days in a year and it looks like I haven't missed too much. If the get rid of EJ, Days will most definitely go down the drain bc 80% of the people watching Days, watch it because of James Scott. All the events I went to, everyone was there to see James and really no one else. They better really think about that one. Besides Daniel, EJ is the only other guy on Days that is good looking!! I don't think TPTB know how to utilize the people they have on Days right now and the ones that have left bc of they knew how to do that, alot of people wouldn't have left last yr. Just a thought!!!!! lol!!!!

I agree that a lot of viewers are tuning in for James. He's what brought me back to the show two years ago (has it been two years?). I think James would choose to leave before TPTB would ever dream of firing him. But, as much as I like him, I'd hate to see half the cast sacrificed to pay his salary. I like the idea karebr had of bringing back some kids and letting them be the true next generation. Instead of moving all these new people into town, just get the kids and have them all come home.

I like the character of EJ, but I'm so sick and tired everytime EJ gets upset about something, he runs and sleeps with Sami. To me, that is getting old and tiresome. I love EJ paired with Nicole and they should really get back to that. I too think that the show now should be based on the next generation of kids and let some of the older stars that have huge salaries go, so they can afford to have around the next generation. I have watched Dyas for 27 years and I have never been as disappointed with Days as I am right now.....

I truly believe the only one that can be with Sami & be able to truly deal with her is Lucas. EJ, Rafe only think they can or could.

Didn't it say somewhere recently that a guy was being brought in for Gabi? That could have changed with the change in writers though.

If James Scott were truly as important as some proclaim then we wouldn't see a consistent pattern of lower ratings when he leads in episode counts. Days thrived for decades before JS came along and there is nothing factual to support claims that Days "needs" him. Days doesn't need any one character and the ratings patterns indicate a stronger likelihood that JS harms the show more than he bas ever helped it. Days needs a younger villain but it doesn't have to be EJ and I think it's past time for a replacement in that category.

from daytime royalty daytimeroyaltyonline.com/topic/8673626/71/DAYS Stars React To ExitsBy SOD • Posted: Apr 11, 2012 Share After Digest broke the news yesterday that the cuts had begun in Salem, reactions from the stars — and one mom — appeared on Facebook and Twitter. "As you've probably heard, the news came out today that my character (and I) will be leaving the show," posted Matthew Ashford (Jack) on Facebook. "That's the way it goes in this business…. as always-thank you to everyone for your support." After a dinner with co-stars Galen Gering (Rafe), Shawn Christian (Daniel) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole), Patrick Muldoon (Austin) tweeted of his and co-star Christie Clark's (Carrie) exit, "#DAYS been great 2 us. It will always be home. We all feel sick." On Drake Hogestyn's (John) Facebook fan page, Clark's mother, Cathy O'Connor Clark, wrote: "Hey guys just wanted to say I'm in mourning. I've known since last Tues, that they let Christie, Patrick and Matt go. It's really sad. Christie has been soooo sad. She felt like she did a great job, and couldn't believe it…. I'm so sad to see her so sad. Please write in if you'd like. Cuz they told her there was a possibility she could come back." www.soapoperadigest.com/content/days-stars-react-exits

I wonder if "there's a possibility [you] could come back" is the equivalent of "Yeah, sure, I'll call you."

Lets face it.....people watch Days whether it's for a particular character or storyline and if Days has neither a character or storyline that someone or alot of someones are interested in, then Days needs to be canceled because it's going no where fast. Right now, there's nothing going on with Days that can keep me interested and wanting more. I really think that they need to start all over with Days or just cancel it all together. The back and forth thing is getting really old. I say get rid of all the older characters and let Days be based around Melanie, Chad, Abby, Gabby, and Will. I mean they are the next generation because there's not a snowball's chance that Nadia and Jay will ever come back to Days and reprise their roles and who could really blame them for not wanting to come back to Days. I wouldn't come back for less pay then what I left making........

If the right changes are made at Days, JKJ may be willing to return but yes I agree that some choices under Tomlin is what led to JKJ's decision to leave. I think Tomlin was a very poor choice for co-HW but the other writer choices are good (and who knows how long Tomlin will last anyway) and it seems likely that Meng will heavily influence (if not outright direct) creative choices, so perhaps the right exits and other choices will open a door for JKJ's return. Nadia is a sweetheart and I wish her all the best but I am not as sure about Chloe's return being good for Days. I don't think she would be a bad choice but there may be better ones or a better timing.
Trying to build a soap opera around the youngsters or any other one age group will never work. That's not a soap, it's a really cliched sit com.
