After classes were over, Jack gathered his things and made his way home on foot, taking the shortcut through the Horton Square Mall. He noticed Daniel sitting on a bench. “Smarmy wife stealing cur,” Jack thought to himself. Well, that’s a little unfair, Jack rationalized. He’s more of a mongrel than a cur. Jack sat on the bench beside Daniel, and Daniel slowly turned his head toward Jack.
Daniel: Jack.
Jack: Daniel. You look like you lost your best friend.
Daniel: No need for sarcasm.
Jack: How was your adventure on ice with the fair Jennifer?
Daniel: More sarcasm?
Jack: None of the above was sarcastic. I just wondered how your date with Jennifer went.
Daniel: I’m sure you already know. If you’ve come to gloat ...
Jack: Gloat? What on earth are you talking about?
Daniel: Haven’t you heard? Jennifer and I are history. We’re over.
Jack: What???
Daniel: You heard me. It’s over.
Jack: It’s over? I can’t believe it. That must mean ... I mean it has to signify ...
Daniel: Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to be alone.
Jack: Your wish is my command.
Jack took his leave and sprinted to the Horton house to see his fair Jennifer. As he did, he felt like he was walking on air. He was beside himself with anticipation, now that he knew he was the chosen one. He always believed in his heart that they were meant to be, but he feared that Jennifer might not come to the same realization. Thankfully, oh so thankfully, she has.

More of a mongrel than a cur. Love it! But, I do feel Jack's heading straight for heartbreak because Jennifer is an idiot.

HORTON HOUSE
Jack knocked on the door of the Horton house and Abigail answered.
Abby: Daddy! What are you doing here?
Jack entered the house.
Jack: Abigail, I’ve come to ...
Abby: Listen Daddy, if you’re here to give me another lecture, please don’t.
Jack: Lectures are us. But I didn’t come here to ...
Abby: Trust me, I’ve thought this whole thing through six ways to Sunday and I know what I’m up against. I know all the pitfalls of being involved with a married man, and I’m willing to take the chance.
Jack: Abigail, you’re still so young. You may think you know what you’re getting yourself into, but as an older and wiser person, I can assure you that ....
Jennifer came out of the kitchen and into the living room.
Jennifer: Jack!
Jack: Jennifer!
Jennifer: Are you kidding me?
Jack: Pardon?
Jennifer: You knew?
Jack: Knew ... knew what?
Jennifer: You knew about Abigail and Austin and you didn’t tell me?
Jack: Um, Jennifer, I think you’re jumping to conclusions.
Jennifer: All this time, you knew about this and you didn’t come to me?!? I can’t believe this. This is huge. This is so important. This is our daughter’s future and you kept it a secret from me!
Jack: Jennifer, calm down. It’s not as bad as it seems. We can work this out, the three of us, as a family.
Abigail: Mom, please don’t blame Daddy.
Jack: It’s okay, Abigail. Why don’t you give your mother and me a minute to talk alone.
Abigail nodded and went upstairs.
Jennifer: What happened to “Oh Jennifer, I’m a changed man. You’ll see.” No more secrets, right Jack?
Jack: But this isn’t my secret to tell. It’s Abigail’s.
Jennifer: I can’t talk to you about this anymore. Please just leave.
Jack: What?
Jennifer: Get out of here. Just go.
Jack: But Jennifer ... I ... the reason I came ... I heard you broke up with Daniel.
Jennifer: How dare you speak to me about that!

Everything is totally in (current) character and I hate Jennifer now more than ever. I agree with MrsM. The title should TOTALLY be changed.  |
