I'm not sure why Philip was so nervous about asking Naran to switch offices. It seemed to go well.
This is going to be emotional when Justin and Daniel talk with Maggie.
Philip is in all business mode to try to distract himself from his pain. I hope Chloe realizes that and isn't upset that his message wasn't very personal.

Glad Philip got his suits, and that Naran was so understanding. Hopefully the talk with Maggie goes well.

I'm glad Naran was understanding about the move. Some people would have thrown a fit to be moved to a different office that might not have any of the "specialties" that come with an office previously occupied by the CEO's son.
I'm not really thrilled about Daniel being present when they talk to Maggie about the directive. If he can't have more compassion about his own step-father.......hell - his own Godfather, then I'm sure things will be tense from the get go and this won't go over very well.

Daniel is organizing the medical personnel. How is that not being helpful? I’m glad Maggie has someone there for her. He will keep an eye on her health and well being.

I'm glad that Naran didn't hassle Philip about the office switch.
The meeting with Maggie will be so difficult. Having to make these decisions is heartbreaking.

Thank you my loves for reading and commenting and being so engaged in this story. One of my favorite lines from the past week was when Philip told Parker he got a promotion and Parker said, “I thought you were already the boss of everyone.”

I’m sure Maggie won’t take the news well. Wonder what happens during Chloe’s session with Mary.

Thanks for the previews Kpatch. Maggie will undoubtedly have a rough time dealing with Victor's health directive. I wonder what Mary will suggest to Chloe.

Chapter 15
After dinner, Philip and Maggie sat on the living room sofa. Philip looked at the time, wondering where Justin and Daniel were. He really wanted to get this over with.
“You surprised me at the hospital this afternoon,” Maggie told him.
“Surprised? How?”
“You fought to have your father recuperate here at home instead of a long-term facility. I guess I didn’t realize you cared about your father so deeply.”
“Of course I care,” Philip blurted, surprised and a little insulted that Maggie of all people could say a thing like that. “It’s no secret that Dad and I have had our moments. Make that days. Make that years. But he’s my dad.” He fell silent for a moment. “He was there for me when I got back from the war, he supported me through my reconstructive surgeries. I came back a shattered man and he took care of me, Maggie. I experienced firsthand how he never gave up. I saw how much it pained him to see me that way, and I’ll never forget—” Tears flooded his eyes. He couldn’t seem to utter a full sentence lately without getting emotional. “I’ll never forget how he looked and it wasn’t until I became a father, until I had Parker, when I realized you’d do anything to keep your child from suffering.” He looked at Maggie. “I don’t want dad to suffer. I want to be there for him, to make sure he’s cared for with the dignity he deserves.”
Maggie choked back tears of her own. She reached out and held Philip’s forearm. “He was horrible to you in Chicago, firing you and giving you ultimatums.”
“We made amends,” Philip reminded her, “and I’m grateful we did. Hell, he was best man at my wedding … last Saturday.” Felt more like three years ago.
“And I’m grateful to you for advocating for your father. I know he’s grateful too.” Philip’s brow knit. “I agree with what you said,” she explained. “He’s in there somewhere and he’s grateful you’re here.”
He patted her hand on his arm. “I’ll be here as long as you both need me.”
Justin and Daniel finally arrived.
Looking up, Maggie said, “Daniel, I wasn’t expecting to see you tonight.”
Philip rose from his seat, not really knowing why.
“We need to talk to you, Mom.”
“Oh god. Is Victor—?”
Daniel grasped her hand as he took the seat next to her on the sofa that Philip just vacated. “No. He’s still the same. We’re scheduled to move him home on Saturday, so you’ll start to see technicians arriving tomorrow to set up the medical equipment.” Daniel looked at Justin.
Justin sat down in the high-backed chair next to the sofa. Philip headed to the bar and poured himself a drink. He turned around and watched Justin, Maggie and Daniel. Somehow, he felt more comfortable watching this happen from a distance rather than being in the midst of it.
Justin held a legal document in his hand. “Maggie, this is Victor’s living will. It states that he doesn’t want to be kept alive by artificial means if there is no chance of recovery.”
Her eyes widened. “Oh my lord.” She looked at Daniel. “We talked about this, but I didn’t know he made it legal.” She turned back toward Justin.
“What does this mean?”
Justin swallowed a lump in his throat. “The living will he enacted stipulates that he be removed from life support 30 days after the date on which he became incapacitated. So, the clock started ticking two days ago.”
Maggie blinked hard. She looked at Philip standing near the bar. “Philip, how long have you known?”
It took Philip a moment to remember he wasn’t just watching the proceedings. He set his glass down and rubbed his forehead. Taking a step closer, he muttered, “Justin told me about it yesterday. We weren’t sure if you knew or not.”
Turning back to Justin, she asked, “What happens if we don’t comply?”
Justin held up the document and quietly said, “These are Uncle Victor’s wishes.”
She forced a smile to cover the pain. “Well, we all know Victor likes control, so it shouldn’t surprise me that he gets to play God and decide the hour of his death.”
“Mom.” Daniel reached out to her, but she quickly got up off the couch.
“I need to be alone right now. Please excuse me.” Maggie left the living room and headed for the stairs.
