Chapter 464a
Kayla was about to descend the stairs in Hope’s house when she heard voices wafting up the staircase. It sounded like a serious conversation so she waited before going downstairs.
In Hope’s living room, Belle begged, “Please Mom. I know you know where he is. You’re not only his mother, you’re his boss.”
“That’s true, but—”
“Please! I’m losing my mind here.” Belle’s face showed desperation. “I’ve tried calling. Texting. He’s been out of touch since New Year’s. He won’t respond. Or maybe he can’t. Is Shawn in trouble?”
“He’s fine, Belle.”
“So you’ve spoken to him,” she said as a statement rather than a question.
“Yes. He’s been in touch.”
“With you, but not me,” Belle said sadly. “Can’t you tell me where he is at least? I mean is he in Chicago? Cairo? Malaysia?”
“He’s actually closer than that.” Hope sighed audibly. “My gut tells me that if Shawn wanted you to know where he was, he’d have told you.”
“He’d have to answer my calls to do that.”
“Okay. Okay, but I’m just telling you this because I hate to see you so upset. He’s in Brookville.”
“Brookville? You mean Brookville, as in 30 minutes from Salem?”
“That’s the one.”
Belle’s jaw dropped. “He’s only 30 minutes away and he can’t bother to come home and see me once in a while? Is it a top secret assignment?”
“I’ve said too much already. And before you ask, I don’t know how long he’ll be there. He really is on an assignment and it’s an important one. Sweetie, I hope you hear from him. I hate that you two are separated.”
“I’m sure he told you why.”
“Not in so many words.”
“I do love him.”
“I know you do.”
“He’s the father of our child. The love of my life for all of my life.”
“I hope you are able to find a way to reconcile. I really do.”
“Me too,” Belle said weakly. “Thanks Mom.” Belle turned and headed for the door.
Hope called, “Keep in touch, honey,” as Belle walked out of the house.

I can't really feel sorry for Belle. She claims to love Shawn and then backtracks the moment she thinks she has a shot with Philip.
I have to wonder how much of that conversation Kayla will relate to her own situation.

It was kind of Hope to give Belle the info about Shawn. I hope Belle doesn't go looking for him and end up messing up the case.

Chapter 464b
Once Belle left, Kayla came down the stairs where Hope was folding laundry on the living room coffee table. “I didn’t mean to overhear, but that sounded pretty serious,” Kayla said.
“It was. It’s just so sad that so many couples we know and love who belong together are apart right now,” Hope stated pointedly. Hope looked Kayla up and down. She was wearing a conservative dress topped off with a short jacket. “You look nice. What’s the occasion?”
“You mean why aren’t I wearing a bathroom and floppy slippers today?” Kayla quipped. “I have an interview today.”
“A job interview?”
“That’s right. A nurse friend of Maxine’s is works at Advent Health Medical Group and Maxine told me they’re hiring. It's a multi-discipline practice. So I sent in my CV and they want to meet with me.”
“That’s fantastic,” Hope enthused.
“Yeah, it’s about time I got off my butt. And as hospitable as you’ve been to me, I’m sure you want me out of your hair, especially now that you have a boyfriend.”
Hope waved at the air. “Don’t be silly, Kay. Unless you’re planning to move back home—to your home with Steve, you’re welcome to stay here as long as you want. Don’t even think about finding a place of your own. That doesn’t make sense.”
“Well, we’ll see,” Kayla hedged. She spread her arms out. “Do I look okay?”
“You look beautiful, Kay.”
Kayla forced a smile. “I haven’t been on a job interview in decades. I’m a little nervous. Wish me luck.”

I hope Kayla’s interview goes well But I’m actually hoping she gets her job at the hospital back seeing as they’re short staffed before they cut her loose

Kayla is moving in the right direction with her job. So proud of her for starting to live a little again. Now she just needs to meet with Steve and work things out.

Chapter 464c
A man in a medical coat set his eyeglasses on his nose and looked up from a job application he was reviewing on his laptop. “Dr. Brady, you are applying for a position in our multi-discipline practice.
“That’s right, Dr. Melman,” Kayla replied. “I’ve been a generalist most of my career, and that makes me ideally qualified to step into whichever specialty I’m needed.”
Kayla was surprised to find herself sitting in the office of a local medical practice on an interview of all things. Everyone had been encouraging her to get back among the living. What they were really suggesting was getting back together with Steve. She wasn’t sure when or if that would happen, but she had to admit it felt good to be talking about her career in medicine again. Salem University Hospital wasn’t the only game in town.
The doctor looked at Kayla’s resume on his laptop. “You were Chief of Staff at University Hospital.”
“That’s right. For nearly ten years.”
“I read about what happened.”
“I figured you would.”
“You lost your license.”
“As a physician, yes, but I plan to contest that action. Even though I can’t practice medicine as a doctor, I can serve as a medical assistant or physician’s aide until my license is reinstated. I was a nurse before I became a doctor.”
“We can sure use someone with your experience,” he admitted. “I gotta tell you, I’ve asked myself what I would have done in your position.”
Kayla braced herself to get shut down. “To be frank,” he continued, “I would probably have done the exact same thing you did. As physicians, our priority has to be the patients and sometimes you have to make a decision based on the circumstances, even if you’d probably do something completely different under ideal circumstances. But when is anything ever ideal?”
Kayla sighed with relief. “Thank you for understanding, doctor. I loved my job and I hate that I had to leave, but you’re right. I didn’t have a choice,” she stated, even if that’s not how she really felt. “I had to authorize extra hours, even though it was over and above what the state allowed. I was thinking about the patients.”
Dr. Melman folded his hands on his desk. “I think you’d be a good addition here. You’d need to speak with my partners first and you should know we have a three month probation period for all new medical personnel. We want to be sure you’ll be a good fit before we bring you on more permanently.”
“I understand and I’m more than willing to do what it takes. I really like what you’ve built here and I’d love to be part of it.”
“And we’d love to have you.” Dr. Melman held his hand out and Kayla shook it.
