Poor Rafe. He may be a target of the mob and has no idea where his son may be. I hope the letter gives him some much needed information.

Dearest Rafe,
If you are reading this letter, it’s because something terrible has happened to me. Gary doesn’t know it, but I made an arrangement with my girlfriend, Ashley, that if I didn’t call her every night, she would mail this letter to the FBI. You need to know the truth about what happened to me. When we meet, and I know we will meet soon, you must ignore everything I say to you, for it is all a lie. Here is the real truth:
Gary is not my lover. He is, in fact, my captor. I have been held prisoner in Atlanta for the past 5 years. I trusted the police and they betrayed me. Gary informed me shortly after getting here that he was connected to the de Luca family and that if I ever stepped out of line, he would have me killed. He forced me to live as his wife, thankfully in name only, and never speak a word to anyone. He didn’t know that I developed a close friendship with my neighbor, Ashley, but even she doesn’t know the whole story. All she knows is that Gary is my “husband” and I am afraid of him.
The worst part of this deception is what I know I will soon have to tell you. Gary is forcing me to say that, not only are he and I happy together, but that you have a son. I will hate him forever for making me tell this lie. You do not have a son. I never gave birth to our child because I miscarried in my second month. Our little angel was taken from me right when my nightmare began.
I don’t know why Gary decided to contact you after all these years other than to punish me. He enjoyed reminding me that he was the master of my world and that if I stepped out of bounds, I would not be able to survive his wrath. Perhaps this is a test. I hope I pass. Unfortunately, because you are reading this, I know that I did not.
Please go on with your life and find love. If you already have, may God hold you close and keep you safe. I pray every day that you will never know the sadness I have been living with the past 5 years. I still love you as much as I did the day my world changed.
All my love, Emily

Awww. That's so sad!!!
Gary turned into such a horrible person. I'm thinking that Gary may have stepped out of bounds with the De Luca family so the eliminated both problems - Emily and Gary - or Emily has gone back underground again and wrote that note to throw everyone off the trail of finding more loved ones. You've got so many twists & turns DD that I don't know which way to think about it!
Great chapter DD!!!

OMG, I am crying Poor Emily, she lost everything and had to live so miserably. At least she had that friend in Ashley. Poor Rafe has to be upset that his son is gone, but must be relieved the child is not in danger.

OMG, poor Rafe must be on an emotional rollercoaster. I hope they get the letter authenticated. I don't even know who to believe anymore. Maybe Ashley was in cahoots with Gary.

The letter falls from Rafe’s hand. He drops into the chair behind him.
CARRIE: Rafe? What is it? What does the letter say? RAFE: (To no one in particular) There is no David. He doesn’t exist. CARRIE: What are you saying? RAFE: (Looks at Carrie, tears streaming down his face) She lost the baby. She was lying to me. CARRIE: (Wraps her arms around him) Oh no. I’m so sorry. DOYLE: What exactly did she tell you before? When you met? RAFE: At the café? She said that she and Gary were happily living in Atlanta and that David was a thriving 4 year old. She said he looked just like me. DOYLE: What else did she say? CARRIE: (Turns, angrily) What does it matter now? SHANE: (Gently to Carrie) Because she may have given us some more clues. We have yet to determine if Rafe is still a target. RAFE: (Buries his head in his hands) Who cares? SHANE: (Gently to Rafe) I know you don’t want to put anyone else in danger. If the de Lucas are coming after you, you won’t want Sami, or Will, or the other kids to get caught in the crossfire, do you? RAFE: Of course not! SHANE: I understand you’re frustrated. But we have to make sure that you, and your family, are safe. RAFE: I know. And thanks. But Emily didn’t say anything else. She never mentioned the mob. CARRIE: What should we do? DOYLE: I know we said before that you should head back to Salem. But based on this letter, the best course of action would be for you both to remain in Chicago. At least for a little while. RAFE: (Exasperated) Fine. Whatever. SHANE: We’ll set you up in a safe hotel. RAFE: (Sarcastically) Awesome. CARRIE: Thank you both. The FBI arranges for Carrie and Rafe to stay at the Four Seasons – Ritz. They settle in for the night in a spacious two bedroom suite. Rafe moves through the suite like a zombie. The crushing disappointment of the day has left him almost dead inside. Carrie takes care to put him in bed and then goes to leave towards her own room.
RAFE: Wait. Stay with me? CARRIE: Rafe….. RAFE: I know. I just don’t want to be alone. Nothing fishy, I promise. CARRIE: Ok. Just let me get ready for bed.
Carrie goes back to the other bedroom and sits on the edge of her bed. She is staring at a painting on the wall. It is a generic image of a snow-covered mountain with a small house. The house has a plume of smoke coming from the chimney. Carrie thinks about the small chateau she and Austin shared in Switzerland. A tear forms in her eye. Her phone rings.
CARRIE: Hello? AUSTIN: Carrie. Hey. Listen, we need to talk.

Hmmm. Poor Rafe. His life is quickly doing a downward spiral. I wonder what Austin wants to talk to Carrie about.

So sad for Rafe, but I think there's more to this than he realizes. Did you say the FBI is putting them up at The Ritz? Good thing the government has money to burn. Austin has really good timing!
