Emily and Gary are pronounced DOA and Rafe spends the next twelve hours answering questions. No one at the force worked with Rafe previously, and the new cops don’t care about his history with the police. They treat him like any other witness/suspect. After a tense night at the police station, Rafe boards the late train for Salem. Staring out the window at the passing landscape, Rafe can’t believe the roller coaster he’s been on the last couple of days. First, he and Carrie made love. It was wonderful. And then she was gone. That was bad. Then he finds out Emily is alive and that he has a son. Amazing. Then she, along with his old friend Gary, is gunned down in the streets of Chicago. Horrific. Rafe blindly looks out the window. Searching for something he can’t find.

RAFE: (Quietly) Carrie. I need you….


THE NEXT DAY, OFFICES OF CARRAFE INVESTIGATIONS (AKA REED AND HERNANDEZ)

Rafe walks in. He looks like hell. His hair is disheveled, his eyes are bloodshot, and he hasn’t eaten in two days. When Carrie sees him, all of the regret and nervous anticipation she’s been feeling since she ran out of their hotel room vanishes in an instant. She immediately rushes over to him.

CARRIE: Oh my god, Rafe. What’s going on? What’s wrong with you?
RAFE: (Flatly) She’s dead.
CARRIE: What do you mean? Who? Here, sit down.
RAFE: Emily. She’s dead. Again.
CARRIE: What do you mean she’s dead again?
RAFE: They shot her. Gary too.
CARRIE: (Confused) Ok, you’re gonna have to go back to the beginning here. Tell me the whole story.
Rafe tells her everything that happened after she left the hotel.
CARRIE: Oh my god. (Stands up, rubbing her cheek) Oh my god, Rafe. We have to go find David. He might be in danger.
RAFE: (Head in his hands) I can’t even think straight.
CARRIE: I can. I’ll start making some calls. But, in the meantime, you need a shower, shave, and a good meal. Since you’re a member at the gym across the street, go there and shower, and then head to the restaurant next door. Get something to eat and take your time. I’m going to need at least an hour.
RAFE: (Robotically) Ok.
CARRIE: (Ushers him towards the front door) You go. I’ll make some calls.
RAFE: (Turns to her) I don’t know what I’d do without you.

Rafe crosses the street to the gym, as Carrie suggested. Fortunately, no one he knew was there so no one could tattle that he was already home. He’d gone straight to the office in the hopes of seeing Carrie. He hadn’t even gone home. Sami had no idea he was already back. And he wants to keep it that way as long as possible. Even if it is only a few more hours. He buys a shirt and a pair of gym shorts and goes to shower. He then goes to eat and within the hour he heads back to the office. Carrie is pacing back and forth in the front office with the phone to her ear.

CARRIE: Really? You’re kidding me. Are you sure? (Listens) Wow. (Listens and scribbles down an address) Got it. We’ll be there in 3 hours. Thanks! (Hangs up)
RAFE: Found something?
CARRIE: You won’t believe what I found. But we have to catch a train back to Chicago right now. I’ll tell you about it on the ride.

I knew Carrie would be there for Rafe. It's interesting how Rafe is distancing himself from Sami. At a really low point in his life, it's Carrie he turns to. Love it!

ON THE TRAIN TO CHICAGO

RAFE: Ok. So what did you find?
CARRIE: I pulled a lot of strings, but I was able to find out that the FBI has no knowledge of Emily being in Witness Protection and they say Gary was fired from the FBI 5 years ago.
RAFE: What? How is that possible?
CARRIE: Apparently, the precinct that handled Emily’s case was being controlled by the mob. Everything that happened there was reported directly to the boss, Giordano de Luca, an Italian. The person Emily saw killed was from his “family.” The shooter was from a rival family, the Gravinas. They’re Sicilian. She really was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Every single cop she talked to that day was with the de Luca family. That’s why they wouldn’t let her call you. They took good care of her because she could help put away the top hit man of the Gravinas. And she’d be doing it legally. She was a witness to a murder, after all. What they couldn’t anticipate was the hit man rolling on the head of the Gravinas family. He made a deal with the prosecution, while the “Godfather” went on trial. When the trial was over, the de Luca’s sent her to Atlanta, telling her she was in Witness Protection.
RAFE: You can’t be serious.
CARRIE: It wasn’t until after the trial that the DA started looking into the precinct and figured out the mob connection. The precinct was closed within a few months. It’s unclear how long the mob was controlling everything, but Emily inadvertently helped bring it down. She probably never even knew about it.
RAFE: This can’t be real. How did you find this all out?
CARRIE: (Winks) I told you I have friends in high places.
RAFE: Seriously?
CARRIE: (Shrugs) I called my Uncle Shane. When he heard it was about you, he found out everything he could and called me back.
RAFE: All in the span of 45 minutes?
CARRIE: Well, Uncle Shane works fast.
RAFE: So, why are we going to Chicago?
CARRIE: Because Uncle Shane is there, and he’s getting the FBI to help us. We’re going to meet him at the train station, and he’s going to drive us over to Headquarters.
RAFE: This is incredible.
CARRIE: Come on. We’re here.
RAFE: Shane is here? In Chicago?
CARRIE: He’s working with the FBI, in conjunction with the ISA, on some kind of international smuggling ring, or something like that. Anyway, he’s here and he’s waiting for us. Look, there he is! Uncle Shane!
SHANE: (They hug ) Carrie! So good to see you! And Rafe. (They shake hands) Long time no see my friend.
RAFE: Shane. I can’t thank you enough for helping me, us, with this.
SHANE: It really is my pleasure. But we need to hurry. They’re holding Gary’s computer and going through his files now.
RAFE: They’re going to let us see his files?
SHANE: I told the agent I’ve been working with about your story, and since you are former FBI yourself, she said she would let the rules slide a bit, and give you access to the information. We’re all doing what we can to solve this mystery, but we don’t have much time. As soon as the tech department is done with Gary’s computer, they’re going to ship it off to Quantico.
CARRIE: Then let’s get going.
