Ok I must answer this one I do not think she is taking care of Philip out of guilt but out of love. I think despite all that happens, she loves Philip and will always love Philip. She has loved him from the start and one thing the show portrayed is that despite everything, Melanie kept choosing Philip over and over and over and over and over and over again. She could no sooner stop loving Philip than she could stop breathing....and even than I think she will love Philip still. If there is any guilt there, it is only because she is human. But I venture to say that the love for Philip outweighs any guilt she might feel as reason to care for Philip. If it is just guilt, would she be taking all these extra courses? Would guilt make her care for his son and do everything he can to ensure Parker is safe? Would it be guilt that when Melanie looks at Parker she sees Philip? Would it be guilt that she sits with Parker for hours, telling Parker all about his daddy? Would it be guilt to massages his muscles to stimulate circulation or to brush back his hair, give him a kiss, do any of that?? I personally think guilt can make people do a lot of things, but even guilt I do not believe can make people go that far. I have watched the Phelanie story and also reading this story, there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the main and clear cut reason why Melanie is taking care of Philip is because she truly loves him and once again, she chose him over all other opportunities. Her first choice will always be Philip.

In my opinion, it’s a combination of guilt and love. I think all those things you mentioned (such as caring for Parker, massaging Philip’s muscles, learning about his condition, and so on) could have definitely been done out of guilt. But it’s the care with which Melanie performs those tasks. They aren’t burdens for her. They’re labors of love.
But it’s that much more complicated because (it’s Slyn doing the writing and) the guilt of the accident is heaped on top of all the pain of the one-night stand and subsequent breakup, birth of Parker, Chloe’s presence and illness, etc. Talk about layers!

Chapter 4 pt 2 just posted and we see that Chloe is still going on with her plan to run, despite the fact that Philip cannot join her.
This little section was important for me to write, I really wanted to show Chloe seeing how her son has been living without her. So I had her break into Parker’s world and take it all in. Surprisingly the experience seemed to make her think about Parker’s father more than ever. Philip really seems to be haunting Chloe and Melanie doesn’t he?
I wanted to talk a bit about the imprisoned/trapped feeling that seems to be a part of all three of the characters. We have Philip trapped inside his own body, and Melanie thinking about Philip trapped in the car. We have Melanie being perceived as being trapped by her choices to take care of Philip and Parker. And last we have Chloe literally, trapped because of her actions, by the law. It definitely was a conscious decision on my part to put these characters in these positions. I wanted to write a story about people pushed to their limits. Interesting things can happen when you are feeling desperate and caged in. Of course, Philip has the least control over his situation, but it is his confinement to the bed that is adding to the emotions of Melanie and Chloe.
In this chapter we see Chloe acting out trying to go for her freedom. It seems likely that Melanie could be the next to try to break free. Or maybe not, perhaps she really doesn't feel trapped, and it is a labor of love like JKJPatch and Angelatil stated earlier in the thread. Definitely something to think about.
And what about Chloe's reaction to the mural on the wall? Seemed to throw her off her game big time? Very unsettling
Next update Bo and Melanie talk at the hospital. Could be a good chance for her to reveal that Chloe has been sneaking out of the ward and going to see Philip. Bo is the law. But I'm thinking their conversation may be of a more personal nature.

Thanks Slyn. I really enjoy your detailed author's notes. I really liked seeing Chloe in Parker's room taking it all in. I loved her surprise at seeing the photo of her and Philip and the memory it triggered. It was great to find out about the final conversation between Chloe and Philip before his accident. How ironic that in their last conversation she mentioned how alone she felt and Philip reassured her that they'd always be there for each other. I feel like that night is haunting her. I can hardly wait to see what Maggie says to Chloe.

I can definitely imagine Chloe holding onto the memory of that night tightly. Seems like Philip made promises to both Mel and Chloe that they wish he would keep. So sad.

Neither Chloe nor Melanie seem to be able to fathom a life that doesn't include Philip. They both need him so much as does Parker. I hope that even in his coma he can feel how much they care for him.

I wish we could wake him and let the fun begin. Looks like he is going to have a battle for his heart. I think Chloe might be seeing what she missed out on.

Isn't it unthinkable that it rarely happened on the show? kpatch was saying that to me earlier, that she liked that I had him in the middle of a triangle. Philip was rich and hot. Why weren;t all the ladies all over him?

I'm a bit surprised Nicole never went for him.

Could have been an older woman story. LOL They seemed to like to write Philip as the loser in love until Stephanie and Melanie. I am glad they broke his losing streak,

If you believe Corday and I'm not sure I do, he said the original Philip/Chloe/Brady triangle was going to end Phloe if Jay hadn't given his notice.

Next of all modern soaps have no END couples unless cancelled. So I think he was talking nonsense as per usual. But I guess we shall never know now. I am glad they had Philip lose Chloe though, and later Belle...gave his character such depth. The two tours in the service as well, and his injury. They did him a favor by letting him suffer. He is a far better and deeper character than Brady and ShawnD now because of it.
