RAFE: Who am I? (removes his hand from Carrie’s and looks at his wedding ring) I’m your sister’s husband. CARRIE: Silly. I know that part. Who were you before you married my sister? RAFE: You want the full version or the Twitter version? CARRIE: (laughs) How about something in the middle. Maybe just the high points. RAFE: Ok. My family is originally from a small town outside of Los Angeles that, I promise, you’ve never heard of. My mother, Luisa Lopez-Fitzgerald, and my father David Hernandez, were high school sweethearts and married right after they graduated. CARRIE: They were so young. RAFE: I know, right? They went on to have 6 kids – Me, my sisters Gabi, Arianna, and Isabella, and the twins Dario and Mario. CARRIE: Twins? So they run in your family too? RAFE: Ha, yeah. But you’re messing up my story. (winks at her) Hush. I met a wonderful girl in high school named Emily and we were together all through college. She was great. We both wanted a huge family and we never fought. Ever. After we graduated from UCLA, we moved to Chicago to start our lives together. (looks out the window at a distant memory) I got a job with the local police department and she went to work as an elementary school teacher. We were engaged two months after we got there and she got pregnant shortly after that. I was in heaven. And then, I was in hell. She left one morning to go shopping for the baby and she never came back. CARRIE: Never came back? What happened? RAFE: No one knows. The police found her car in an alley downtown and they assumed she’d been abducted. When they found her blood in the trunk, they assumed she’d been murdered too. Since I was related to the victim, they wouldn’t let me work the case. At one point, they even suspected me of doing something to her. I was out of my mind with grief. I searched high and low. I scoured the internet for any clue of her. But I never found a thing. She literally vanished. Her parents declared her dead, we “buried” her, and I tried to move on. I left the force, joined the FBI and tried to lose myself in the bureau. Five years later I was assigned to your sister and here we are. CARRIE: Wow. “I’m sorry” just doesn’t seem like enough. (reaches out to touch his cheek) But I am truly sorry for your loss. RAFE: (reaches up to hold her had against his cheek) Thank you. A long moment passes between them as they stare into each other’s eyes and then suddenly they become uncomfortable with the intimate contact. RAFE: (coughs) So, um, I guess we should really look out for this Martin guy. Do you have his picture? CARRIE: Right. Yeah. It’s in that file on the dashboard. Oh, look! Somebody’s coming out. RAFE: (quickly flips through the file) DMV records show he drives a 2012 Lexus Hybrid SUV. He’s heading over to that one over there. Yep, the license plate matches. That’s our guy. CARRIE: Well, quit yammering and let’s get this car moving. We don’t want to lose him.

Uh oh, I think there are more Hernandi coming to town, including maybe Rafe's child. I think:
1. We haven't seen the last of Emily (thank you for including this in your story!); and 2. Carrie knows more about Rafe at this point than Sami does.
I can't wait to find out what else you have in store for us, DD!

Love the incorporation of Luisa Lopez-Fitzgerald as his (and Arianna's) mom. I'm giggling over here.... Dario and Mario....first, love the names. Second, hate the idea that Dario could have a twin! Let's hope that Dario was the dull one and Mario is the exciting one, otherwise...gah! And yes, I'm sure Carrie knows way more about Rafe than Sami does. This conversation is more realistic and creates a better connection between them than say, a thermostat breaking and making them strip down to their skivvies. Haha!

The Lopez-Fitzgerald thing is priceless DD! lol I've hated watching Rafe on the show for a while now, mainly because I was so bored with his character. But I must admit that this Cafe possibility proves interesting...hope the writers really go somewhere with it. Nice fic. TFP

Rafe has a lot more family than I thought... and Emily was pregnant? This could get very interesting!

DRIVING THROUGH THE STREETS OF SALEM
CARRIE: Where is he going? This is crazy. RAFE: He went south and then turned west only to go east and then north. It’s like he’s trying to cover his tracks or something. CARRIE: Well, he certainly doesn’t want anyone following him. Good thing there are a thousand cars like ours on the road, otherwise he’d surely see us. RAFE: We’ve stayed pretty far back, so I think we’re ok. This is so far away from the places we normally go that I doubt anyone would recognize us. Hold up. He’s stopping. I’ll drive past him and then circle back. You keep an eye on him. CARRIE: Got it. He’s going inside that building there on the right. (turns to Rafe) Let’s go in. If it’s a brothel or strip club or something like that, I’ll pretend I’m with you and you’re my pimp, or whatever. RAFE: (with a half smile) You’d make a great stripper. CARRIE: (smacks him on the shoulder with mock outrage) Jerk. But thanks.
They park and head towards the building. They are shocked to see what is written on the door.
RAFE: “Miss Millie’s Dance Studio?” CARRIE: Dance? As my father would say, what da hell? RAFE: Is it possible it’s just a cover? And a strip club is actually inside? CARRIE: You sound a little too eager to see some strippers. RAFE: Then I’d guess we’d better go in so we can see what’s actually in there. What should be our cover names? CARRIE: I’ll be Joan and you can be Randy. RAFE: Joan? Randy? Where did you come up with these names? CARRIE: (shrugs) It’s a gift. You ready Randy? RAFE: Ready Joan!

Of course you would come up with a Dance Studio ;D
That could actually be a lot of fun for Carrie & Rafe. Joan & Randy? I am trying to think what significance those names could be..

LOL at the suspect traveling every which way.
I really liked Carrie quoting her father!
This story reminds me of that Richard Gere movie where he was taking dancing lessons.
Carrie and Rafe are getting a littletooclose.
Thanks for the update DD. Looking forward to reading more!

FRONT DESK OF MISS MILLIE’S
WOMAN: (with a great big smile) Welcome to Miss Millie’s Dance Studio. I’m Millie. Are y’all ready to start dancing? RAFE: Uh, we’re just here to watch. CARRIE: Um, I heard about this place and wanted to drag my hubby here to see if you can get him on the floor. MILLIE: (smiling at Rafe) Oh. Don’t you worry, hon. Most men are a little nervous about their first time. (winks) But we’ll go easy on ya. The first group class of the night is going to start in about 5 minutes. It’s a beginner Waltz class and would be perfect for y’all to jump in. The first class if free to try and if you think you’d like to stick around, we’ll talk after class about how we can make that happen. Y’all sit tight. Millie walks away leaving Rafe and Carrie alone. CARRIE: Apparently it actually is a dance studio. Sorry to disappoint you. RAFE: Nah, that’s ok. (turns to Carrie) Actually, this works great. I don’t see a single person here that would know who we are. CARRIE: How is that possible? RAFE: I dunno. But I don’t recognize anyone, do you? CARRIE: (looks around) Amazingly, no. Huh, and I thought I knew everyone. But I still don’t get why we should join in on this group class. RAFE: We’ll be undercover. If we’re in the same group class with Martin, we can cozy up to him and find out the real reason why he’s here at Miss Millie’s and why he’s spending $2000 a month. Maybe the studio is a front. CARRIE: You’re really hoping there are strippers or hookers in there somewhere aren’t you. REAFE: (winks) Never. CARRIE: Alright, twinkle toes, let’s see what you’ve got. MILLIE: Welcome to Beginner Waltz everyone! This is a fantastic dance and is, actually, one of my favorites. I’d like to give you a short demonstration. Martin? Will you help me? MARTIN: Absolutely, Miss Millie.
The demonstration looked very much like this:
Carrie and Rafe look at each other in disbelief.
MILLIE: Thank you Martin. Now, don’t go getting nervous about what you’ve just seen. That’s some pretty advanced dancing but we’re just gonna start with the basics. I need the gentlemen to line up over here and the ladies to line up facing them, but a few steps back. Ok. Here we go!
Millie proceeds to teach the class a few basic steps, and soon Rafe and Carrie forget that they are actually supposed to be working. They giggle when one of them makes a misstep, but end up having a fantastic time.
MILLIE: Ok. Now that we’ve all learned our parts, gentlemen, I need you to take your lady and hold her close. That’s it. Place your right hand on her back and take her right hand in your left. (she comes over to Rafe and Carrie) Now, Randy, this is the woman you love. You can hold her closer than that. RAFE: Right. The woman I love. Come here Joan. CARRIE: (moves in closer) You’ve got me Randy. MILLIE: There. Now isn’t that better? Alright, everyone. And a 1, and a 2, and a….. The music drowns out every thought as Rafe and Carrie are caught up in the sweeping movement of the dance. Suddenly, they are even more caught up in the heat between their bodies. They stare at each other and grip their hands tighter and tighter.
