Chapter 10 CHICAGO JAN (VO, narrating): I don't remember how I got there, but by the next morning, I was in Chicago. I wandered around for a few hours, looking for something to do. Finally, I found something. APARTMENT COMPLEX Jan knocked on a door in the hallway of an apartment complex. The door opened to reveal Melanie. MELANIE: Hi. Can I help you? JAN: Hi. You're Philip Kiriakis' wife, aren't you? MELANIE: Girlfriend, actually. But, yeah, I'm living here with him. I remember you from his high school reunion. You're Jan Spears, aren't you? JAN: Yeah. MELANIE: Come on in. JAN: Thanks. PHILIP & MELANIE'S APARTMENT Jan walked in. MELANIE: So, what brings you to Chicago? JAN: I don't know, really. I just needed to get out of Salem. Some things have happened there in the past, and Chicago seemed like a nice place to go. MELANIE: Gotcha. Well, Philip won't be back until tonight, but you're welcome to stay until he gets back. JAN: Thanks. MELANIE: So... JAN: So... MELANIE: Philip's told me a bit about you. He told me a lot about what happened to him in high school. JAN: Ah, so you know about me, then. MELANIE: A little bit. But, I'm no one to judge. I don't have the greatest history, either. So, do you have a place to stay? JAN: No. But, I probably won't be in Chicago long enough to find a place to stay, either. MELANIE: Well, you're welcome to stay here, if you want. JAN: Thanks. But, I don't think that would be such a good idea. MELANIE: Why not? JAN: Let's just say that Philip might not be too thrilled with having me stay here. MELANIE: Because of what happened to all of you guys in high school? JAN: Yep. MELANIE: Jan, that was ten years ago. Philip's moved on. Things are different now. JAN (VO, thinking): More different than you know.

Chapter 11 PHILIP & MELANIE'S APARTMENT That night, Philip walked in the door. PHILIP: Honey, I'm home! Melanie walked up. MELANIE: Hey. PHILIP: Hey. Philip and Melanie kissed. MELANIE: So, we have a guest staying with us for a few days. PHILIP: Great. Who? Jan walked up. JAN: Hi, Philip. PHILIP: Jan? Jan Spears? JAN: So, you still remember me? PHILIP: Yes, Jan. I still remember you. You are, unfortunately, very hard to forget. Plus, I saw you at our high school reunion. What are you doing here? JAN: I needed to get out of Salem. I decided to travel for a while, but I couldn't find a place that I liked yet. So, I stopped here. PHILIP: And, you're living with me and Melanie now? JAN: No, I'm just staying here for a few hours. I won't even be here for a day. I just wanted to see you. PHILIP: Why? JAN: Because, I wanted to catch up. What's been going on for the last seven years since I went into a coma? PHILIP: A few proposals, a few marriages, a few divorces, a few affairs, I faked a face-swap operation, my dimples are still as attractive as ever, and I've had my highlights done. JAN: Oh, yeah. I noticed the dimples. That was one of the few things I liked about you back in high school. MELANIE: Wait, wait, wait. You faked a face-swap operation? When did this happen? PHILIP: Shortly after Jan went into a coma. MELANIE: So, that's why your high school yearbook looks exactly the same as your face does now! PHILIP: Yep. So, Jan, what's happened to you since getting out of the coma? JAN: I went to rehab, the reunion, I left rehab, and I've been wandering around the world since then. PHILIP: Fun. Now, out. MELANIE: What? Philip, you can't just kick her out! JAN: He kinda can, actually, Mel. It is his apartment. And, he has no real reason to welcome me here with open arms after everything I've done. MELANIE: Philip, she has nowhere else to go. JAN: I'll be fine, Melanie. Philip dug into his pocket, pulled out a large sum of money, and handed it to Jan. PHILIP: Here. Take it. Jan took the money. JAN: What's this for? PHILIP: A plane ticket out of Chicago. JAN: Gee, thanks. PHILIP: Plus, there's a little extra money. Enough for a hotel room once you find a new state. JAN: Okay. Thanks. Jan walked out. MELANIE: What was all that about? PHILIP: Trust me, it's better this way, Mel. From what I know of her, Jan Spears is nothing but trouble.

Chapter 12 BAR JAN (VO, narrating): So, I'm back in New York again. Maybe this wasn't my best idea, but when I got there, I went to a bar. Actually, let me rephrase that. It definitely wasn't my best idea. After having a little bit too much, I walked out of the bar. But, then, I ran into him again. Guess who I mean by him. Go on, guess. Yep, that's right. Paul Mendez. PAUL: Hey, baby. JAN: You! I (hiccup) remember you. You raped me twice and tried to kill me. PAUL: Whoa there, baby. Now, you know that you wanted that as much as I did. Jan laughed. JAN: You think so? Well, I've got some news for you. You tried to kill me. So, now, I'm gonna kill you. PAUL: Wait, what? JAN (VO, narrating): I had started carrying a gun with me since I returned to New York. And, for extra protection, a knife. I pulled out the gun. PAUL: What do you intend to do with that? JAN: What do you think? PAUL: Hey, now. Take it easy, sweet cheeks. Let's just talk this over. Jan shook her head. JAN: No way. You just wanna try to rape me again. I'm not gonna let that happen. Say goodbye, Paul Mendez! Jan pulls the trigger. JAN (VO, narrating): I shot Paul twice. Then, I pulled out the knife and plunged it into where his heart would be if he had one. Paul is now lying on the ground. Jan is standing over him. JAN (VO, narrating): I just stood there for a few minutes. Then, fearing that I would be arrested, I ran. I ran as fast as I could, which, when you've had a few too many drinks, is not very fast. PARK JAN (VO, narrating): After feeling like I had gotten far enough, I sat down on a park bench and went to sleep there. And, no, I don't mean Benchy. I'm still in New York, not Salem. This is a completely different bench. I woke up the next morning feeling like my head was about to split open. The stench was horrible. BEACH JAN (VO, narrating): I walked a little until I found a beach. I ran into the water, if for no other reason, than to wash the smell off. After completely washing myself, I walked out. It had started to rain. There was a man standing on the beach, looking at me. He looked familiar. I walked up to him. PARIS: Hello, Jan. It's been a while. JAN: Dr. Paris?

Chapter 13 BEACH PARIS: Hello, Jan. It's been a while. JAN: Dr. Paris? PARIS: Yes. JAN: What are you doing here? PARIS: I've been keeping tabs on you, Jan. I needed to make sure that you were okay. And, I'm sorry that I've let things get this far. JAN: You said that I'd see you again soon. You said that when I saw you, I would learn who you are, and that it would be when everything changes. PARIS: Indeed I did. And this is the day when everything changes for you. JAN: How? PARIS: Have you ever heard of the idea of alternate universes? JAN: What's that? PARIS: The theory that, for every decision that is made, the alternative decision is played out in an alternate universe. These universes are exactly like ours, but with several slight differences. Over twenty-five years ago, my partner, Walter Bishop and I found a window into one of these universes. Jan stared for a minute. JAN: Your partner, what did you say his name was? PARIS: Bishop. Walter Bishop. Jan stared. WHTIE ROOM – FLASHBACK WILLIAM: You'll meet a man named Walter Bishop. Tell him “Belly” says hello.BEACH JAN (VO, narrating): It was then that I figured it out. I knew then who this guy was. PARIS: You know, don't you? You know who I am. JAN: You're that man. That man from my dream. You're Dr. William Bell. WILLIAM: That is correct, Jan. And, now, it is time for me to leave you. JAN: No! Dr. Bell, you can't! You're the only person that can help me! I need help! WILLIAM: I know, Jan. And, you will see me again soon. Just stay here. William disappeared. Jan stood there, looking out to the sea, in the middle of the rain. JAN (VO, narrating): So, here we are. Right where we began. That's how I got to this point. So, what happens next? Well, I'd like to know that, too. A wave came up to where Jan was standing. It splashed her, lightly. Then, a bigger wave came. A third wave came and pulled Jan under, into the sea. Everything went black.
