Chapter 28a


Please listen to the music playing as the guests file from the chapel to the dining hall.


Once everyone found their tables, the bandleader announced, “May I have your attention. Would everyone please rise and welcome, Philip and Chloe—the new and improved Mr. and Mrs. Kiriakis.”

Philip and Chloe walked into the dining room holding hands as the guests stood to applaud. Brady whistled and Rafe did a cat call as they entered.

When they reached their table for two, the announcer said, please raise a glass of champagne while the Maid of Honor toasts the bride and groom.

Nicole stepped away from her table and out into the open. The bandleader handed her a cordless mic. “Okay, I have to say this. Chloe typically has really good taste in men. I know this because, over the years, the two of us have fallen for and fought over the same men. Hmmm.” She put her index finger on her chin in dramatic fashion. “But never Philip, which, I suppose must mean he’s nothing special.” She paused to wink. “I’m kidding, of course. Love you Philip. Love you Chloe. You two were made for each other and I always knew that. Everyone knew it. I even gave Philip some advice when he was trying to woo you in high school, before he became such a heartthrob. Remember, Philip?” Philip nodded. “If I knew then you’d turn out to be one of the sexiest men alive, I might have given Chloe a run for her money. … Aw hell, I wouldn’t have stood a chance and I know it.” She raised her glass. “Be happy you guys.” She took a sip from her champagne flute and set it on the table before quickly walking to the dais and hugging Chloe, then Philip. Speaking into the mic, she said, “And now I’ll toss it over to the best man to give his toast.” She walked the microphone over to Victor and hesitated. “I may be sorry, but it’s tradition, so here you go, Victor. Be good.”

Chapter 28b


Victor took the microphone from Nicole. He was about to speak when Parker tugged on his jacket. Victor set the microphone aside and leaned over. “No, you don’t have to give a speech. … Yes, it’s customary, but … Of course.” Victor held the microphone to his mouth. “Our other best man would like to say a few words first. Go ahead, Parker.”

Parker took the microphone and held it with both hands. He looked around the room and suddenly appeared shy. “Hi.” Everyone laughed, including Chloe and Philip. “I’m happy my mommy and daddy got married. Now they can’t ever break up anymore. See, I told them a long time ago they should get married but they said I had to be patient. I didn’t know what that meant, but boy do I now. It means you have to wait forever. Anyways, they coulda saved a lotta time if they listened to me, but I’m just a little kid. Oh—” Parker rubbed his forehead the way Philip often does. “Daddy says I’m the best little man he knows and that’s why he picked me to be his best man with Grampa. So. Uh.” He looked up at Victor. “What else am I supposed to say?”

Victor smiled and patted Parker’s shoulder. “You’re doing a fine job, Parker. You can wrap it up if you’d like.”

“Oh. Okay. So, happy wedding everyone. There’s tons of food, but—” He glanced over at the buffet table and wrinkled his nose. “When I get married, I’m ordering pizza and burgers.” He handed the microphone back to Victor as the crowd laughed and applauded. Maggie reached over and gave Parker a hug.

“I certainly can’t top that, so I won’t try,” Victor said.

Chloe and Philip held hands and glanced at each other in nervous anticipation over what Victor might say.

He looked around the room and addressed the crowd. “Most fathers want their sons to grow up and be like them. Despite that popular belief, I never really wanted Philip to be like me. Rather, I wanted to be more like him.” He turned his gaze toward Philip. “Honest, caring, respected, honorable, and someone who’s not afraid to express his feelings. All his life, my son has tried to win my approval. What he didn’t know is that, at the same time, I’ve been trying to win his. Frankly, I don’t think I’m worthy.” He raised a glass. “Don’t ever change, son. To Philip and Chloe, I wish you as much joy together as I’ve found with my bride. A long and happy life.”

Philip swallowed hard as he glanced at Chloe. She squeezed his hand and nodded. He took a deep breath and walked over to his father’s table. When the two men hugged, Maggie blotted her tears and the guests applauded. Philip then leaned down to hug Parker in his chair. “You did great, big guy. You’re the best best man ever.”

Those were both really nice speeches! Glad both Victor and Parker gave speeches!

I'm proud of Victor saying all of those things not just to Philip but in front of everyone.

Parker's speech was cute. I agree with Parker that pizza and burgers taste better than most reception meals.
