Chapter 261
NOVOTEL CAIRNS – AUSTRALIA
CLAIRE: Okay.
CIARA: “Okay”? That's it? That's all you have to say?
CLAIRE: I don't really know what to say. Sorry. I mean, you liked it when Trix kissed you.
CIARA: Kind of. Only kind of.
CLAIRE: Okay, kind of. So, what does this mean?
CIARA: I don't know. I really don't know. I mean, I'm not gay. I know I'm not.
CLAIRE: Would it be such a big problem if you were?
CIARA: But I'm not. I've had crushes on boys. You know that.
CLAIRE: I do, yeah.
CIARA: So...I don't really know what I am. Experimenting, I guess, until I figure things out.
Claire sat down next to Ciara.
CLAIRE: And that's okay. Take as much time as you need to figure things out.
CIARA: I just wish this wasn't so hard.
Claire put an arm around Ciara.
CLAIRE: I know. But, you know your whole family and all of your friends would support you, whatever you are.
CIARA: No, I know. I'm not worried about that. I'm just really confused. I thought I had things all figured out. Sooner or later, Theo and I would get together, and that would be that. But this...I don't know.
CLAIRE: Hey, it's okay. I know it might not feel like it now, but it'll be okay. Ciara, you're one of the coolest people I know. And, whatever it is you're feeling, it will all work out. Just remember, if you need anything, I'm here for you. So are all our friends and family.
CIARA: I know. Thanks, Claire. You're an awesome friend.
Claire and Ciara hugged.
CIARA: I'll be okay. It's just gonna take some time to figure all this out.
CLAIRE: I know you will. You're strong, Ciara.
Ciara took a deep breath.
CIARA: Well, guess I should finish packing now.
Ciara got up, as did Claire.
CIARA: Thanks again.
CLAIRE: No problem.
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Tommy was looking over David's leg.
TOMMY: Well, I must say, it looks good. Those stitches will need to be taken out next week, so be a bit careful walking on it. If you do want to try to walk without crutches, that is.
DAVID: I plan to.
TOMMY: Then, at least take it easy when you do. And, if you get tired, or your leg starts to hurt, use the crutches.
JULIE: Oh, I'll make sure that he will, doctor.
TOMMY: Good. I'll see you in a week to take out those stitches and give you a final check up, so that'll be that.
DAVID: Thanks, doc.
TOMMY: No problem.
Tommy and David shook hands.
JULIE: Thank you, Tommy.
TOMMY: That's all right. Have a nice afternoon.
Tommy walked out of the room.
JULIE: Well, I suppose that after next week, you're going to be leaving for Michigan again.
DAVID: Geez, mother, ready to get rid of me already?
JULIE: David, of course not. Darling, being able to spend the last several months with you has been wonderful. I just assumed that you'll want to get back to your job at Marquette General.
DAVID: No, mother. I'm staying. I said I was staying a few months ago, and I am. Apparently Scott put in a good word for me, I got a call from this place, and I've already accepted.
JULIE: Oh, David, that is so wonderful!
Julie hugged David.
DAVID: But, just so we're clear, I'm getting my own place.
Julie rolled her eyes.
