SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Maisy quickly put the syringe behind her back.
MAISY: Maxine…I didn’t see you there.
MAXINE: I gathered that. What’s goin’ on in here? Everything okay, Claire?
Claire nodded.
MAISY: I was just about to give Claire her meds.
MAXINE: Uh-huh. Before you do that, I need to talk with you for a minute.
MAISY: Can it wait? This’ll literally take ten seconds.
MAXINE: No, it can’t. Whatever medication you’ve gotta give Claire, that can wait. She doesn’t take any medication that’s on a strict schedule, except her anti-rejection meds, and it’s not anywhere near meal time. Now, follow me, please.
Maxine smiled at Claire.
MAXINE: We’ll see you in a bit, Claire.
Maisy rolled her eyes and followed Maxine. They walked down the hall until they came to an empty patient room. Maxine closed the door behind him.
MAISY: Oay, what’s so important?
MAXINE: You know, I’m not really a fan of the tone you’ve got going on right here.
MAISY: Sorry, it’s been a long day. My apologies. What’s going on?
MAXINE: Well, that is the question, isn’t it? Maisy, I like you. You may be new, but since you got hired, you’ve been a great nurse! You’ve really jumped into the job. Which is why I wanna know, just what do you think you’re doing?
MAISY: What do you mean? I was just doing my job, giving medication to a patient.
Maxine folded her arms.
MAXINE: Mmhmm. You wanna tell me the truth now?
MAISY: That is the truth!
MAXINE: Girl, do you think I was born yesterday? You may think that just because I work mostly behind the desk, I don’t see much, but believe you me, I see and hear a lot more than most people think.
MAISY: What are you saying?
MAXINE: I’m saying I know about that syringe.
MAISY: What syringe?
MAXINE: The one you’ve been trying to hide behind your back since I walked in on you and Claire. Now, Dr. Horton had me double-check all of the medications that Claire takes recently, so I know for a fact that not one of them is given via a syringe. So, I’ll ask again, you wanna tell me what’s going on?
Maisy laughed nervously.
MAXINE: Did I say something funny to you?
MAISY: This is crazy! Are…are you implying that I’m drugging a patient?
MAXINE: Honey, I’m not implying anything.
The color drained from Maisy’s face.
MAISY: You wanna be really sure about this, Maxine. I mean, really sure, before you do anything.
MAXINE: Now, that sounds like a threat if ever I’ve heard one. You should know that I don’t take kindly to threats.
MAISY: What are you gonna do to me?
MAXINE: Do? I’m not gonna do anything to you. You’re gonna do it yourself. You’re gonna tell Dr. Johnson what’s going on.
MAISY: And why would I do that? If I do, I’ll lose everything!
MAXINE: I’m sorry to hear that, but you made a choice, and you’ve gotta deal with the consequences. What I don’t understand is why. Why would you do something like this, Maisy? You’re a good nurse! I don’t know what’s in that syringe, but I can only imagine it’s doing something to Claire. Why would you deliberately harm a patient?
MAISY: I can’t tell you!
MAXINE: Is someone threatening you? Is that it? ‘Cause if they are, that’s even more reason you gotta tell Dr. Johnson. Come on, Maisy, you know this isn’t right. We may not know each other very well, but I can tell you don’t really want to hurt anybody. So, I need to know what you’re giving Claire Jennings, what it’s doing to her, and who’s threatening you. Then you and I, we’ll go to Dr. Johnson and sort this out.
Maisy hesitated.
MAISY: I can’t…
MAXINE: Honey, Dr. Johnson’s gonna find out one way or another, and it’ll sound a whole lot better coming from you.
Maisy shook her head.
MAXINE: All right, then. I’m talking to Dr. Johnson either way.
Maxine went to leave.
MAISY: It’s a synthetic drug.
Maxine stopped and turned back to face Maisy.
MAISY: This scientist, he made it in a lab. He told me it would…that it would change her brain chemistry. I don’t know how it would change it or why, I was just supposed to inject her with it twice a day.
MAXINE: Why would you do something like that?
Maisy wiped her eyes.
MAISY: I, um…I have a gambling addiction. I’ve been getting help for it, but before I did, it was really, really bad! I racked up massive debts. Then, I met someone who said he could pay off my debts if I did some work for him. At the time, it sounded better than dealing with the loan sharks, so I agreed. I knew it was wrong, but I really, really needed to get out of debt!
Maxine handed Maisy a tissue and gave her a moment to collect herself. She put a hand on the younger nurse’s shoulder.
MAXINE: All right. Thank you for coming clean about that. Now, we’re gonna talk to Dr. Johnson and figure this out. Come on.
Maxine put an arm around Maisy and walked her out of the room.
