DON’S OFFICE
Don had set up an office in the Town Square. Jade and Nicole were currently there with him.
DON: So, she actually threatened you?
NICOLE: In the vague way that only Jan Spears can. She has a way of twisting things around so that they don’t sound like a threat.
DON: So what exactly did she say?
NICOLE: She said that if I tried to make a move, she’d tell the judge that I was manipulating her, trying to make her break the restraining order by confronting her.
JADE: Which is so far from the truth!
NICOLE: Not that I was intimidated by her. I eat kids like Jan Spears for breakfast, or at least I have in the past.
DON: I understand. I’m glad you came to me with this. How populated was the park when she confronted you?
NICOLE: Not very. It was relatively early in the afternoon, but as it’s still only mid-spring, it’s fairly cold out. I’d say there may have been half a dozen people there, aside from Jade, Jan, Emmy and myself.
Don nodded.
JADE: It shouldn’t matter how many people were around! She broke the conditions of the restraining order!
DON: That is true. I’m simply trying to determine whether she could claim that she didn’t, as one of the conditions is that she can be around if there are others present.
NICOLE: Excuse my French, but that’s a load of crap!
DON: I don’t disagree with you. If the rule is followed correctly, it means that there must be at least one person present and observing interactions between you to make sure she doesn’t try anything. I presume that nobody was watching the four of you?
NICOLE: Not to my knowledge.
Don set down his pen.
DON: Then we might just have a case for Jan to go back to prison. But, we’ll need to work quickly. Her probationary period will be up soon. I’ll call the judge as soon as I can and let you know how things go.
JADE: Thank you so much, Mr. Craig!
DON: You’re welcome. I’ll be in touch as soon as I know more.
NICOLE: Great.
DON: Have a good afternoon, both of you.
JADE: You too.
Jade and Nicole left Don’s office.
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Chase was getting a sandwich from the cafeteria. Shawn-D walked over. He, too, had a sandwich in hand.
SHAWN-D: Hey, how’s it goin’?
CHASE: Not bad. I went in to see Claire, but she’s still asleep, so I thought I’d come down for a breakfast sandwich.
SHAWN-D: I had the same thought. Hey, if you’ve got a minute, I had a question for you.
CHASE: What’s up?
The two paid, then sat down at a table.
SHAWN-D: You’re Claire’s medical proxy, right? Since you two are married, I mean.
CHASE: Yeah, but right now she doesn’t need one. None of the tests the doctors have done have shown any brain damage.
SHAWN-D: No, I get that, that’s not what I meant. What I’m asking is, can the doctors share treatment information with you?
CHASE: Yeah, totally. Claire and I both have it set up so if anything happens, doctors can tell us anything that we need to know. Is this just because you’re a concerned father, or what’s going on?
SHAWN-D: Well, that’s part of it, yeah. Even though you and Claire are married, and I totally trust you, and I know Claire’s an adult, I’m always gonna worry about her.
CHASE: Yeah, that makes sense.
SHAWN-D: The other part is…I don’t know, man. This is gonna sound a little strange, but I met one of Claire’s nurses last night and I got this weird vibe about her.
CHASE: Weird how?
SHAWN-D: It’s hard to describe, it just seemed like there was something going on there.
CHASE: Hm, that’s odd. What nurse was it?
SHAWN-D: She said her name was Maisy.
CHASE: Maisy? Heh. I don’t recall hearing that name before. Then again, I haven’t been here 24/7.
SHAWN-D: Me either. She did say she was new.
CHASE: Well, maybe I just haven’t met her yet, then. Still, if you think something’s odd, I trust you.
SHAWN-D: Thanks. I just wanted to let you know.
CHASE: I’m glad you did. If something’s going on with Claire, I need to know about it. What exactly did this Maisy do that made things weird?
SHAWN-D: She said she came in to give Claire a sedative. But I didn’t think she needed a sedative, she didn’t seem upset, and none of the machines showed any abnormal activity.
CHASE: I see. I didn’t think she needed one, either.
SHAWN-D: She said Dr. Horton prescribed it.
CHASE: Interesting. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll look into that.
SHAWN-D: I appreciate it, man.
KIRIAKIS MANSION
Maggie was sitting on the couch, talking on her phone.
MAGGIE: I just wish you could have stayed longer, it was so nice having both of my girls back together, and seeing Nathan. Oh, I know, darling, I know. I’m just glad for the time we had together. All right. We’ll talk to you soon. Love you, too.
As Maggie hung up, the doors to the main room opened and Philip and Melanie walked in.
PHILIP: We’re home!
Maggie got off the couch.
MAGGIE: Oh, welcome home! It’s so good to see you!
MELANIE: You too!
Maggie gave both Philip and Melanie a hug. Melanie drew in a sharp breath when she did.
MAGGIE: Darling, are you all right?
MELANIE: I’m fine, I’m totally fine. It’s not a big deal.
MAGGIE: Okay, when you say it’s not a big deal, that makes it sound like it is. What’s going on, Melanie?
MELANIE: It’s really not that bad. It’s just…we were sunbathing. I was wearing my sunblock, as always, but I guess I didn’t get my back well enough. I got a little sunburnt.
MAGGIE: Oh, my dear girl!
MELANIE: I’m fine, really. It looks worse than it is. My back’s just a little tender, that’s all.
PHILIP: I knew I should have insisted we put on an extra layer of sunscreen.
MAGGIE: Well, as long as you’re okay, that’s what matters. Now, tell me all about your trip! How was Greece?
