HORTON CENTER
ERIC: How’s the journaling going?
Jade shifted in her seat. She fidgeted with a squishy ball.
JADE: Okay, I guess. I’ve been trying to make my thoughts more coherent, but there’s so many things going on in my head right now that it’s really hard.
ERIC: The hearing ended in a way that you didn’t expect. It’s natural that you’d have a lot of emotions after that.
JADE: No kidding. More than anything, I’m scared of what Jan might do. What if she tries to come after me or tries to steal Emmy again? I know the judge gave her a court order that she can’t be alone with either of us, but let’s be real here, Jan doesn’t exactly follow what the law says.
ERIC: That is true. Have you considered the option of getting protection?
JADE: I don’t own a gun. I don’t want to, there’s too many things that could go wrong. Besides, I don’t think my apartment allows them. I have pepper spray in my purse.
ERIC: That’s a good start. What about other forms of protecting both yourself and Emmy?
JADE: I mean, I’ve told Emmy not to talk to strangers. The last time she saw Jan was when she was just over a year old, so I’m sure she doesn’t remember her, so at least there’s that.
ERIC: Very good. What about police protection, have you considered that?
JADE: Not really. I wouldn’t be against it, I just haven’t thought about it. Maybe I can talk to Mr. Brady about that…but I also don’t want to bug him while Claire’s in the hospital.
ERIC: It’s good that you trust Shawn, and that you recognize that this might not be the best time for you to bring it up to him. But Jade, Shawn is not the only police officer that you can trust. Many other members of his family are also officers, and if you are interested in talking to them, I have no doubt that they’d be willing to talk to you.
JADE: Okay, maybe I’ll give that a try.
HORTON HOUSE
Bill and Addie had arrived. Addie and Marie were sitting at the table in the dining room. Bill stood looking at the pictures of the five Horton children which hung on the wall.
ADDIE: They said it was peaceful?
MARIE: Yes, very peaceful.
Addie nodded and dabbed her eyes with a tissue.
BILL: Does Sandy know?
MARIE: She’s here. She arrived shortly before you did.
BILL: What about Lily? She and Tommy were close.
MARIE: Bill, Lily’s the one who found him.
Bill sighed.
BILL: That poor girl.
MARIE: Sandy’s upstairs trying to get her to come down. As you can imagine, she’s taking it quite hard.
Addie nodded. They looked up when they heard footsteps, and saw Sandy and Lily walking down the stairs. Sandy had an arm around her daughter.
BILL: Lily.
LILY: Uncle Bill…
Lily ran to Bill and started crying. Bill wrapped his arms around her.
BILL (whispering): I know, darling. I know.
ADDIE: Sandy.
SANDY: Adelaide.
The sisters hugged.
SANDY: I just…I don’t understand this. I saw Dad just the other day.
BILL: I know it’s hard to understand. I know he didn’t seem it, but Tommy was an old man.
SANDY: But he was in good health! He was still active, he was as sharp as ever! This doesn’t make any sense!
MARIE: No, it doesn’t. But sadly, nobody knows when our time will come. Yes, Tommy was in good health, but sometimes people pass suddenly. It’s sad, tragic even. But it’s important to remember that our brother, your father, grandfather…he had a good life.
There was a knock at the door. Sandy, who was closest to it, opened it.
SANDY: Aunt Maggie.
MAGGIE: Hello, my dear.
Maggie and Sandy hugged.
MAGGIE: I’m sorry. All of you, I’m so sorry.
ADDIE: Thanks for coming, Aunt Maggie.
MAGGIE: Of course. It’s at times like these, when we need family around us the most. I’m here for whatever any of you needs.
BILL: Thank you, Maggie.
SALEM PLACE
Joey and Alanis walked around the mall. Alanis’ phone went off.
JOEY: What’s up?
ALANIS: Chase says Claire’s well enough to have visitors!
JOEY: That’s good. You wanna go see her?
ALANIS: In a little bit, maybe. I’m sure Chase’ll want to spend as much time with her as he can. Much as I’d love to run right over there and see it, I don’t wanna tire her.
JOEY: I get that.
ALANIS: I do want to see her, though. Maybe later this afternoon we can go over.
JOEY: Sounds good to me.
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Claire was sitting up in bed. Chase sat in a chair by her bedside.
CHASE: How are you feeling?
CLAIRE: Okay. I…still have some…trouble talking. I…know the words…but, it takes…a long time to get them…out.
CHASE: Hey, that’s okay. You’ll get there. Whatever happens, we’re gonna get through this together, yeah?
CLAIRE: Yeah.
Chase squeezed Claire’s hand. It took a moment, but Claire lightly squeezed back.
CHASE: I love you.
CLAIRE: I…love you…too.
CHASE: Are you in any pain?
CLAIRE: A little. But…the doctors…gave me medicine.
CHASE: That’s good. Is there anything I can get you? Anything you need?
Claire shook her head, then considered.
CLAIRE: Will you…sing for me?
CHASE: Yeah, of course I will.
Chase moved so that he was sitting on the edge of the bed. He took Claire’s hand, and with his other hand stroked her hair.
CHASE (singing): For you, there’ll be no more crying. For you, the sun will be shining. And I feel that when I’m with you, it’s alright. I know it’s right.
Claire smiled.
CLAIRE: Our song.
CHASE: Yeah, our song.
He continued singing.
CLICK HERE to listen to the song he’s singing. By the time he was finished, Claire had fallen asleep. Chase gently kissed her forehead, then got up quietly and walked out. Ciara walked over.
CIARA: Hey, how is she?
CHASE: She’s got a long way to go, but she’ll be okay. The important thing is, she came out of her coma and most of her physical injuries from the accident are mostly healed, apart from some broken ribs.
CIARA: Thank god! I’ve been so worried about her.
CHASE: Me too.
CIARA: I was gonna go see her, but it looks like she’s sleeping, so…
CHASE: You still could, if you want to. I’ve been sitting with her for a while, so I wanted to stretch my legs. Shawn and Belle went to get something to eat, but they should be back soon. Go on in, just be quiet.
CIARA: Sounds good.
Ciara and Chase hugged.
CIARA: Hey, I’m glad she’s hanging in there.
CHASE: Me too.
