LOFT
The next morning, Jade woke up to something poking her. It took her a moment to fully wake up.
EMMY (whispering): Mommy?
Jade opened her eyes and saw Emmy sitting up next to her on the bed. It was Emmy that had been poking her.
JADE: Hey, sweetheart.
EMMY: Good morning!
Jade chuckled slightly.
JADE: Good morning.
She lifted her head up and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was 6 in the morning.
JADE: You’re up a little early today, aren’t you?
EMMY: Yep! You know what today is, Mommy?
Jade sat up in bed and put on a thoughtful expression.
JADE: Do I know what today is? Let’s see…we just had Valentine’s Day, so it’s not that. It’s not Christmas or Halloween or Easter. I know St. Patrick’s Day is this month, but I don’t think that’s for another week or two…
EMMY: Mommy!
JADE: Hang on, don’t tell me.
Jade snapped her fingers.
JADE: A-ha! I’ve got it. It’s your birthday!
EMMY: Yep!
JADE: Happy birthday, kiddo! Come here!
Emmy jumped onto Jade’s lap. Jade wrapped her arms around her, gave her a big hug and kissed the top of her head.
JADE: Tell me how old you are today.
Emmy put up an outstretched hand.
EMMY: Five!
JADE: You got it! You are my big five-year-old girl, and the best person in my life. I love you so much, baby girl!
EMMY: I love you, too! What are we gonna do today?
JADE: Well, let’s see. In a little bit, we’re gonna have breakfast. Then later today, we’re gonna have your birthday party.
EMMY: Is Auntie Nic coming?
JADE: Yeah, Auntie Nic and a few other people. We’re gonna do all kinds of fun stuff.
EMMY: Yay!
JADE: But, do you know what comes before any of that?
EMMY: What?
JADE: The tickle monster!
Jade began to tickle Emmy. Quite quickly, it broke out into a tickle fight, which ended with both Jade and Emmy lying on the bed laughing. After catching her breath, Emmy sat up.
EMMY: Can we have breakfast now?
JADE: Sure we can. You go get dressed, and then I will make you some birthday pancakes.
EMMY: Yay!
Emmy practically jumped off of the bed and ran out of the room. Jade chuckled as she watched her.
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Elle was sitting in the break room, eating an egg sandwich. Sarah walked in carrying two cups.
SARAH: Morning.
ELLE: Morning, sissy!
Sarah handed Elle one of the cups.
SARAH: For you.
ELLE: Aw, thanks!
SARAH: You’re welcome. I figured you could use a pick-me-up since you had the late night shift.
ELLE: I appreciate it. Still got a couple hours to go, but it was getting time for me to check myself, so I took my break.
SARAH: Gotcha. How’s that going, by the way?
ELLE: A lot better. I don’t know if it was the stress from the move or what it was, but when I first came to Salem, I wasn’t taking as good of care of myself as I should have and usually do. Thanks again for recommending that endocrinologist for me. It’s really helped!
SARAH: Of course. You’re my little sister, I’ve got your back.
ELLE: And if you ever need anything, I’ve got yours.
SARAH: I know you would. So, I’m gonna be starting my shift in the next little bit. Any patient updates from overnight?
SALEM UNIVERSITY
Allie sat in the cafeteria, picking at her food. Meadow, carrying her own plate of food, walked over.
MEADOW: Hi, Allie.
She looked up.
ALLIE: Hey.
MEADOW: Is it okay if I join you?
ALLIE: Sure.
Meadow sat down and began eating.
MEADOW: I didn’t expect to see you here this early.
Allie shrugged.
ALLIE: Couldn’t sleep.
MEADOW: You too, huh? I know what that’s like.
ALLIE: Because of Meadow? The other Meadow, I mean.
MEADOW: There’s a little bit of that still, sure. But also, I have insomnia, so I’m kind of a regular at this time.
ALLIE: Gotcha. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be insensitive or anything, I’m just…
MEADOW: You’re okay. Hey, I’m sorry about your friend.
Allie looked down at her food.
ALLIE: Thanks.
MEADOW: I don’t want to compare situations or anything, but when Meadow died…well, I guess what I’m getting at is, I’m here if you ever want to talk. And I’d like for us to get to know each other better.
She looked back up.
ALLIE: Thanks. I might take you up on that sometime.
