Chapter 14
JAIL CELL
Jan had been found guilty on one charge of attempted murder and one charge of kidnapping. She was put in prison. Her inmate was Samantha Evans, Marlena's twin sister.
JAN: So, what are you in for?
SAMANTHA: I kidnapped, tortured, and murdered E. J. DiMera. And, because I look exactly like her, I unintentionally framed my identical twin sister, Marlena.
JAN: You're Dr. Evans' sister?
SAMANTHA: Yep. I'm Samantha Evans.
JAN: Jan Spears.
SAMANTHA: So, Jan, what are you in for?
JAN: Well, I'll explain it the best way I know how. Through song.
SAMANTHA: You're not serious? Are you?
Unfortunately, Jan was serious. She burst out in a bad parody of “Under the Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Go here to get the tune:
JAN (singing): It started long ago on the island of Puerto Rico. Nicole's psycho father, Paul Mendez, had raped me. He left me hurt and pregnant, but Shawn-Douglas found me. He proposed to me and claimed the baby was his. I fell in love with Shawn-Douglas. But, there was a problem. It seemed he had eyes for another young girl. I tried to convince him that I was better than her. I was sure that he would someday be mine. And I don't wanna lose Shawn-D to that girl, Belle Black. I'll save him any way I can. I'll go all the way. I would do anything just to have my Shawn back. And if I had to murder Belle, that would have been a plus, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I locked Shawn in a cage, yeah, yeah. But, things went the wrong way, yeah, yeah. Outside the Brady Pub is where I lost my love. Outside the Brady Pub, I shot Belle Black up. Outside the Brady Pub, I did it all for love. Outside the Brady Pub, I threw my life away!
SAMANTHA (yelling): Can I have a different inmate, please?!
VISITING ROOM
Jan was led into the visiting room. On the other side of the glass, Shawn-D was waiting for her.
JAN: Shawn? You came back for me?
SHAWN-D: No. No, Jan, I didn't come back for you.
JAN: Well, at least you came to visit me.
SHAWN-D: Why did you do it, Jan? Why did you shoot Belle?
JAN: I already told you. I did it for you. I did it so we could be together. It was obvious that you didn't want me, so I had to make sure that nobody else could have you if I couldn't.
SHAWN-D: So, the same reason as always. You were jealous of Belle. I get it. And, I'm done.
Shawn-D goes to walk out.
JAN: Shawn! Wait!
Shawn-D turns around to face Jan.
JAN: Look, I want you to know that, whatever happens, this started out as me being jealous of Belle, but it turned into something more.
SHAWN-D: Something more?
Jan put her hand on the glass that kept her away from Shawn-D.
JAN: Yes. I love you, Shawn.
SHAWN-D: Something more?
Shawn-D walked up to the glass and put his hand on the same space where Jan's was.
SHAWN-D: That would be so much easier to believe if you weren't behind this glass prison wall right now.
Shawn-D turned and walked away. But, he continued thinking about Jan for the rest of the day, and the days the followed. Sure, she was crazy. Sure, she had tried to kill Belle any number of times. Sure, she had locked him in a cage. Sure, she had chained him to a bed, tortured him, and almost turned into Annie Wilkes. But, in a strange way that he would never be able to understand, he kinda liked her. But that's another story...
