Chapter 40


“Could you answer that, Henderson?” Maggie was on her cell phone when the doorbell rang and she continued her telephone conversation. “This is exactly why I didn’t want to tell you. I knew you’d be upset about the brawl they had. ... You’re right, honey, it’s a dreadful situation and I wish Philip was staying somewhere else while Daniel and Parker are here ... and don’t you dare volunteer to let him stay with you, Melanie. ... No, I don’t think so, in fact Victor says that Philip never cared for Daniel. … I know, but the only reason he ever made an effort was for your sake.”

Henderson appeared in the doorway with a guest. “Sorry to interrupt, Mrs. Kiriakis. You have a visitor.”

“Well I’ll be damned,” she said to the visitor. Then into the phone, she said, “No, not you, Melanie. I have to go, honey. I’ll call you later.” Maggie set her phone down on the coffee table. “Why Craig Wesley! What a surprise.”

Craig stepped into the room as Henderson departed. He took Maggie’s hands and kissed her cheek. “Maggie, you look wonderful. But you, here? Victor’s wife, Daniel’s mother? It’s going to take some getting used to.”

“That’s what most people say, at first. Please, have a seat. How’s Nancy?”

“Very well, thank you. And Victor, is he here?”

“No, he’s at a hospital board meeting with Brady and Philip. Can I get you something to drink? Tea?”

“Thank you, no.”

“Hmmm,” Maggie said uncomfortably as the conversation quickly petered out. “Oh. Are you in town to visit Chloe?”

“I saw her this morning,” Craig nodded.

“I hear she’s doing well.”

Craig cocked his head. “Who told you that?”

“My son, the doctor.”

“Interesting,” Craig noted. “Have you visited her at all?”

“Me? Well, no. I understand she’s restricted to a small number of visitors. I don’t think I’d be high on her must-see list.”

Craig looked around the room. “Speaking of must-see, where’s my grandson? Where’s Parker?”

“Parker is at the playground with his father. They have a standing play date on Tuesday mornings. Oh you should see them together,” Maggie gushed. “Daniel enjoys spending the day playing with Parker more than most doctors like being on the golf course.”

Craig looked at his wrist watch. “Hmmm, I was really hoping to spend some time with Parker. Nancy, Joy, and I visited Chloe and Philip in Chicago and it’s been almost six months since I saw Parker. ... Seems like another lifetime.”

“I know what you mean,” Maggie said. She turned around when she heard her cell phone’s ring tone. She seemed relieved to have a distraction. “Oh, would you excuse me?” She looked at the phone display. “Hmmm, Melanie again. ... Hi honey. ... What?? Calm down. I can’t understand what you’re ... oh my god. Oh no! Oh no! I’m on my way.”

“What’s wrong,” Craig asked. “Maggie, you’re pale. What happened? Is it .... Oh god, is it Parker?”

Great chapter. Can't wait for the next one to see how Parker is!! Craig is going to go ballistic when he finds out Daniel wasn't keeping an eye on Parker!!! LOVE IT!!!!!

Chapter 41


Sitting across from him at the table, EJ’s incessant pencil-tapping was driving Philip crazy. One more tap and he was going to lunge across the table and strangle EJ. Philip was having a hard enough time concentrating on the board meeting as it was. He had a nagging feeling for the past hour that he couldn’t shake. It felt like impending doom. It felt like catastrophe was just around the corner and Philip wasn’t sure he could handle another blow. He prayed it was nothing more than a panic attack.

The directors were droning on and on about profit and loss, budgets, staffing and retirement plans, but none of that seemed important. Everything seemed trivial compared to what was going on in Philip’s life, just outside his control. All he could think about was Chloe and Parker, and how to get the three of them back together as a family.

There was a knock at the boardroom door and a secretary poked her head in. “Sorry to interrupt. Um ... Mr. Kiriakis ....”

“Me?” Philip was already fearing the worst, worried that this secretary was going to give him some dire news.

“No sir,” she said motioning to Victor. “Mr. Kiriakis, your wife has been trying to reach you but your cell is turned off. She said it’s urgent, so I put her through to the conference room phone. Just press speaker.” The secretary left the room, as Victor punched the speaker button on the phone in the center of the conference table.

“Maggie? Are you there?”

Maggie’s panicked voice came through the speaker. She talked very fast and very loud. “Oh my god Victor, I’m so glad I got hold of you.”

“What’s wrong?”

Everyone in the conference room turned their attention to the speaker phone.

“I’m on my way to the hospital.”

“Dear, are you sick,” Victor asked, the growing concern evident in his voice.

“No, it’s not me, it’s Parker.”

Philip’s eyes grew wide. He stood up without thinking. “What happened to Parker?”

“Is that Philip,” Maggie asked. “He fell at the playground.”

“But he’s alright.” Victor looked up at Philip while speaking. “Maggie, a fall in the playground doesn’t sound serious. Why are you....”

“Melanie said he fell off a jungle gym, Victor. He split his skull! They brought him into Emergency.”

Philip kicked his chair aside and flew out of the conference room. He ran down the corridor to the nurse’s desk. “Where’s Parker?” He yelled at the young nurse on duty. His heart was pounding so hard, pulsating in his ears, muffling the sound of his own voice. His eyes darted everywhere, looking for answers. “Tell me!”

“Parker who?” The woman shot back defensively. “And who are you?”

“Parker. Parker Kiri....” He ran his hand through his hair. Webs were tangling. What was Parker’s last name today? Philip could barely remember his own name. The tears were choking in his throat. Why couldn’t she answer a simple question?? “Jonas,” he barked. “Parker Jonas. I need to see him!”

“Dr. Jonas’s son? Oh gosh.” The nurse tapped on the keyboard looking for recent admissions. “When was he brought in?”

“I don’t know. Probably within the last hour.” He was about to cry. He was about to fall apart. Philip pounded his fist on the counter. “Damn it!”

Victor, Brady, and EJ arrived at the nurse’s station. Victor touched his son’s shoulder. “Philip, did you find anything out?” Philip shook his head no.

From the corner of his eye, he saw Melanie rushing toward him, but she seemed to be running in slow motion. When he saw her tear-streaked face, he feared the worst. The room began spinning. Oh god. This can’t be happening. I can’t lose Parker. I can’t lose my son.

Poor Philip. He can't handle much more. I'm glad he was already at the hospital. He couldn't have driven to the hospital safely. I hope there's some good news about Parker soon.
