Chapter 28 SALEM INN - BEDROOM Sami was pacing around the bedroom. SAMI: We'll just have to go, that's all there is to it. We'll take the SnowCat. I'll call the forest ranger first to tell them we're coming. If E.J. won't come with us...well, I'll just have to tell him that we have to leave. Then, she heard a noise coming from Johnny's room. She went over to the doorway and saw Johnny sitting up in bed, staring off into the distance. When Johnny spoke, he used the voice he normally used when speaking as Zane. However, strangely, he didn't wiggle his finger this time. JOHNNY (as Zane): Redrum. SAMI: Johnny? JOHNNY (as Zane): Redrum. It was like he was in a trance. SAMI: Johnny, are you all right? JOHNNY (as Zane): Redrum. SAMI: Johnny, what's the matter? JOHNNY (as Zane): Redrum. Sami walked up to the bed and sat on the edge of it, staring at Johnny. SAMI: Are you having a bad dream? JOHNNY (as Zane): Redrum. SAMI: Johnny? JOHNNY (as Zane): Johnny isn't here, Mrs. DiMera. SAMI: Come on, sweetie. Wake up. It's okay, you just had a bad dream. JOHNNY (as Zane): Johnny can't wake up, Mrs. DiMera. SAMI: Please, wake up! JOHNNY (as Zane): Johnny's gone away, Mrs. DiMera. SAMI: Johnny! ROMAN'S OFFICE E.J. walked in and heard the CB radio going off. BRADY (over CB): SI1 to SI12. The sound crackled. E.J. slowly walked over to the CB BRADY (over CB): SI1 to SI12, do you read me? E.J. glared at the sound of the voice coming out of the CB, as if it had done something to offend him. BRADY (over CB): This is SI1 to SI12. SI12, are you re... E.J. unplugged the CB. he then picked it up and then threw it back down. He looked around the office and found a crochet magnet. Well, technically, it was a roque mallet, but E.J. couldn't tell the difference. He looked at it slowly. Then, with all of the force he could muster, he brought the mallet down on the CB many times over. Soon, it was scattered into pieces, both on the desk where it had once sat, and on the floor. Satisfied that this part of his work was done, E.J. casually threw the roque mallet in the general direction of the desk, then walked out. ST. PETERSBERG HOTEL - FLORIDA Abe was on the telephone again. BRADY (over phone): We tried call, Mr. Carver. Either they have their radio turned off, or they're in a place they can't hear it. ABE: I see. BRADY (over phone): If you'd like, we can try again in about a half an hour. ABE: That would be great. Thank you. Abe put the phone down.

Part 9 - 8 A.M.
Chapter 29 AIRPLANE It was now the next morning. Abe was sitting on an airplane, heading off to Illinois. A stewardess walked by. ABE: Miss? STEWARDESS: Yes? ABE: What time do you think we will be landing in Denver? STEWARDESS: Well, the captain's just informed me that we're beginning our descent. We should be there in about 20 minutes. ABE: Thanks very much. O'HAIRE AIRPORT A short time later, Abe was standing in the airport, talking on the telephone. ABE: Rafe, it's Abe Carver. RAFE (over phone): Abe, my man. How's the weather down there? ABE: Well, at the moment, I'm not in St. Pete's. I'm in Chicago. RAFE (over phone): What the heck are you doing up here? ABE: I've gotta go up to the Salem Inn. What's the weather look like? RAFE (over phone): Lots of snow. I'm surprised your plane was able to land safely. It's been the worst winter in a long time, from what I hear. ABE: Any chance you can fix me up with a SnowCat? RAFE (over phone): I'll see what I can do, Abe. But, how come you've gotta get up there so quickly? ABE: Rafe, just between you and me, we have a very serious problem with the folks taking care of the place. They turned out to be completely unreliable idiots. Roman called me up last night, and I'm supposed to go up there and straighten things out. RAFE (over phone): Yeah, I can probably get you a SnowCat. How soon can you be here? ABE: About an hour, depending on traffic. RAFE (over phone): Should be all set to go by then. ABE: Thanks a bunch. I appreciate it. SALEM INN - BEDROOM Sami was sitting on her bed, as was Johnny. SAMI: Johnny, I'll be back in a minute. I'm just gonna go downstairs and talk to your daddy. I want you to stay in here and watch cartoons, okay? JOHNNY (as Zane): Yes, Mrs. DiMera. SAMI: Okay. I'll be right back. I'm just gonna lock the door behind me. Sami walked out of the room, picking up a baseball bat, which had been sitting behind the door, as she left. STUDY Sami walked into the study, bat in hand. SAMI: E.J.? Cautiously, she walked over to the typewriter E.J. had been using. Strangely, E.J. was nowhere to be found. Sami decided to just take a quick peek at what E.J. had been writing. The page in the typewriter only had one line on it. It read: ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. Strange, Sami thought. That's an odd thing to say in the middle of a book. So, she picked up the page that had just been finished, which was full of lines. However, all of them read ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. So did the next page. And the page after that. And the page after that. Pretty soon, Sami realized that every single page was full of lines, always the same sentence in all caps: ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY, repeated on every line of every page of the book. Then, Sami heard a noise that made her jump. It was E.J. clearing his throat. E.J.: How do you like it?

Chapter 30 SALEM INN - STUDY Sami turned around after E.J. said that. SAMI: E.J.? E.J.: How do you like it? SAMI: I... E.J. walked around the table, Sami followed his eyes. E.J.: What are you doing in here? SAMI (nervously): I...I just wanted to...to talk to you. E.J.: Okay. Let's talk. What should we talk about? SAMI (nervously): I...I can't remember. E.J.: You can't remember? SAMI (nervously): No, I really can't remember. E.J.: Perhaps it was about Johnny. Maybe it was about him. I think we should discuss Johnny. I think...we should discuss what should be done with him. What should be done with him? SAMI (nervously): I don't know. E.J.: Oh, I don't think that's true. I think you have some very definite ideas about what should be done with him. And I'd like to know what they are. SAMI (nervously): I...I think maybe we should take him to a doctor. E.J.: You think maybe we should take him to a doctor? SAMI (nervously): Yes. E.J.: When do you think maybe we should take him to a doctor? SAMI (nervously): As soon as possible. E.J. (mocking Sami): As soon as possible. SAMI: E.J... E.J.: You believe his health is at risk. You are concerned about him. SAMI (nervously): Yes. E.J.: Are you concerned about me, Sami? SAMI (nervously): Of course I am. E.J. (spitefully): Of course you are! E.J. walks towards Sami, who begins walking backwards, brandishing the bat. Soon, E.J. is slowly chasing Sami up a flight of stairs. E.J.: Have you ever once thought about my responsibilities? SAMI (nervously): E.J., what are you talking... E.J.: Have you ever had a single moment's thought about my responsibilities? Have you ever thought about my responsibilities to my employers? Has it ever occurred to you that I have agreed to look after the Salem Inn until May first? Does it matter to you at all that the owners have placed their complete trust in me, and that I have signed a contract in which I have accepted that responsibility? Do you have the slightest idea what a moral and ethical principal is? Do you? Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities? Has it ever occurred to you? SAMI: Stay away from me! E.J.: Why? SAMI: I...I want to go back to my room. E.J.: Why? SAMI (nervously): I...I'm very confused. I need to think about this. I need... E.J.: You've had you whole bloody life to think things over! What's a few more minutes going to do? Sami started swinging the bat, making sure to miss E.J. SAMI: Stay away from me! Don't hurt me! E.J.: I'm not gonna hurt you. SAMI: Please, don't hurt me! E.J.: I'm not gonna hurt you. SAMI: Please, just stay away! Please... They stopped walking, as Sami got to the top of the flight of stairs. E.J.: Sami! Darling, light of my life, I'm not going to hurt you. You didn't let me finish. I said I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just gonna bash your blooming brains in. I'm gonna bash them right the bloody hell in!

Chapter 31 SALEM INN - STAIRCASE Sami waved the bat. SAMI: Stay away from me! E.J.: I'm not gonna hurt you. SAMI: Stay away! E.J.: Stop swinging the bat. SAMI: Don't hurt me, please! Stay away! E.J.: Put the bat down, Sami. SAMI: Stay away from me! E.J.: Give me the bat, Sami. SAMI: Get away! E.J.: Give me the bat, Sami. Sami swung the bat and hit E.J. in the head. E.J.: Bloody hell! Sami swung again, this time hitting E.J. in the head. He fell forward, and Sami quickly walked out of the way. Thinking quickly, Sami grabbed E.J. by the arm and started dragging him through the hallway. KITCHEN Dragging him by his ankles, Sami pulled E.J.'s unconscious body into the kitchen. Unfortunately for her, just as she was getting him to the walk-in pantry, E.J. woke up. E.J.: What... Quickly, Sami pulled the rest of his body into the room, then she ran out and shut the door behind him. She then locked it. By this point, E.J. was on his feet. He started banging on the door. E.J. (yelling): Let me out! Let me out of here! Open the door! Sami leaned against the door. E.J. (yelling): Sami, open this bloody door right now! E.J. pounded on the door more. He breathed heavily. E.J.: Sami, let me out of here and I'll forget the whole thing. It'll be just like nothing had ever happened. A few moments of silence went by, broken only by slight sobs from Sami. E.J. could tell that this wasn't working. He had to go for the jugular. It always worked when he tried the hard sell. E.J. (feigning injury): Samantha...honey, you hurt my head real bad. I think I need to see a doctor. Sami took a deep breath. E.J. (feigning injury): Baby, don't leave me in here. SAMI: I have to go now. I'm...I'm gonna try to get Johnny into town with the SnowCat today. I'll come back with a doctor. E.J.: Sami. SAMI: I have to go... E.J.: Sami. SAMI: Yes? A wide grin spread across E.J.'s face. E.J.: You've got a big surprise coming to you. E.J. laughed. E.J.: You're not going anywhere! He laughed some more. E.J. (laughing): Go check out the radio and the SnowCat. Go on. Go check it out! Sami ran out of the room. E.J. (laughing): Go check it out! E.J. laughed evilly. E.J. (laughing hysterically and yelling): Go check it out! First, Sami ran to Roman's office and saw what remained of the broken CB. She then went out to the garage and saw the SnowCat. It didn't look damaged. Then, she walked around it and saw that E.J. had poured all of the oil out of the machine. Climbing into the cab to see if all was as bad as it sounded, Sami found that E.J. had thought draining the oil wasn't enough. He had used a blunt object (the roque mallet) to smash the controls to pieces. He wanted to make sure there was no possible way they'd be leaving the Salem Inn for the winter.

Part 10 - 4 P.M.
Chapter 32 SALEM INN - PANTRY E.J. had fallen asleep in the kitchen. It was a knock on the door that woke him. E.J.: Sami? He got up and looked around. E.J.: Sami? PHILIP (VO): It's Kiriakis, Mr. DiMera. E.J.: Oh, oh Kiriakis. E.J. dusted himself off. PHILIP (VO): I see that you haven't yet taken care of the business we discussed. E.J.: No need to rub it in, Kiriakis. I'll get to it as soon as I'm out of here. PHILIP (VO): Will you? I have my doubts. The others and I, we have come to believe that you are not fit for this job. That you don't have the stomach for it. E.J.: Please, just give me one more chance, Mr. Kiriakis. That's all I ask. One more chance and I'll prove myself. PHILIP (VO): Your wife appears to be stronger than she seems. More resourceful. We have underestimated her. She seems to have gotten the better of you. E.J.: Only for the moment, Mr. Kiriakis. Only for the moment. PHILIP (VO): I feel that you shall have to deal with this matter in the harshest way possible, Mr. DiMera. That is the only thing for it. E.J. smiled. E.J.: There is nothing that I look forward to with greater pleasure, Mr. Kiriakis. PHILIP (VO): You give me your word? E.J.: Yes. I give you my word. Then, the door opened. E.J. walked out to...correct his family, as Philip had corrected his many years ago. SNOWCAT Several miles away, Abe drove in a SnowCat as fast as he could towards the hotel. SALEM INN - BEDROOM Sami was asleep on the bed. Johnny walked over. It was like he was in a trance. JOHNNY: Redrum. Redrum. There was a knife on the bedside table. Johnny picked it up and pricked his finger until it bled. JOHNNY: Redrum. Redrum. Redrum. Johnny then started tracing his bloodied finger on the bathroom door. He was writing a word on it. The word was REDRUM, in all capitols, with some letters backwards. JOHNNY: Redrum. Redrum. Redrum. Johnny put the knife down on the table and stood in front of the bed. JOHNNY (yelling): Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Sami woke with a start. SAMI: Johnny? JOHNNY (yelling): Redrum! Redrum! SAMI: Johnny, stop this! JOHNNY (yelling): Redrum! Sami sat up. SAMI: Stop it right now! JOHNNY (yelling): Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Then, Sami looked up. There was a mirror on one side of the room. In the mirror was the reflection of the bathroom door. Sami shrieked in horror and hugged Johnny tightly. For now, she was beginning to understand. She knew now what REDRUM meant. For you see, REDRUM, is MURDER spelled backwards.

Chapter 33 SALEM INN - BEDROOM Sami sat there, getting lost in the bloody writing upon the door. But she wasn't sitting there for long. Soon, she heard a loud bang against the door. It was E.J., making an attempt at breaking the door down with an axe. Sami and Johnny ran into the bathroom as E.J. made more splinters out of the door. E.J. : Honey, I'm home. Sami shut and locked the bathroom door. She opens the window. SAMI: Go on, Johnny. Climb up there. Johnny, who has now come out of his trance, quickly climbed up and out of the window. SAMI: Great! Now just wait there for me. Sami climbed up and tried to get out, but the window was too small. Meanwhile, E.J. had broken down the door and was now making his way through the bathroom door. He stopped just outside. E.J.: Little pigs, little pigs, let me in. Sami again tried to go out the window, but to no avail. SAMI: Run, Johnny! Run and hide! E.J.: Not by the hair on your chinney-chin-chins? Sami, who kept a knife in her pocket stood behind the door, fearing the worst. E.J.: Then I'll huff...and I'll puff...and I'll blow your housey down! With great strength, E.J. took the axe to the bathroom door. Sami shrieked with every splinter of cracked wood that came down. Soon, there was a small hole in the door. E.J. put his face through the hole. He looked quite insane. E.J.: Heeeeere's E.J.!! He laughed maniacally and put his hand through the hole, to unlock the door. Sami was quick, though. She took her knife and stabbed him in the hand. E.J.: Bloody...! Sami burst through the door, knocking E.J. over in the process. She ran away as fast as she could. In the distance was the low hum of a SnowCat. E.J. got up. His leg was injured from the door coming down on him. He limped after Sami, axe still in hand. LOBBY A few minutes later, Abe was in the lobby of the hotel. ABE: Hello? Anybody here? Hello? He walked around, looking for someone. What he didn't know was that E.J. had spotted him. ABE: Anybody here? Hello? E.J. came up behind Abe and tapped him on the shoulder. Just as Abe turned around, E.J. plunged the axe into his chest. HEDGE MAZE Johnny had just entered the hedge maze, when he stopped dead in his tacks and screamed. What he had seen was the worst thing he'd seen yet in his stay at the Salem Inn. Even worse than the twins or the hag. Because now he knew what it was like to lose a friend, the only real friend he had made at the Salem Inn. What Abe had said earlier that past fall was true, he and Johnny had shared a special ability. But now, Johnny couldn't feel Abe's shine anymore. Abe Carver's shine had gone out.
