Chapter 21

The Penthouse, John and Marlena’s bed

Marlena: I spoke to Hope today. She told me she asked Bo for a divorce.
John: Are they legally married? I thought she was married to me.
Marlena smacked John’s arm.
Marlena: You’re not funny.
John: Sorry Doc. And I’m sorry to hear about Bo and Hope. I am. They’re the last of the Salem supercouples.
Marlena: No they’re not. We are.
John: Now that’s a fact.
Marlena: I missed you so much John.
John: I know. I missed you too.
Marlena: But why didn’t you come right home when you got into town?
John: Huh?
Marlena: Several people mentioned to me that they thought they saw you in town a few days before you found me praying in the church.
John: Hmmm. I guess they were mistaken.
Marlena: Hmmm. I guess so.
John pulled back the covers and got out of bed.
Marlena: Where are you going?
John: I thought I’d get us something to drink. Champagne and strawberries maybe?
Marlena: Mmmm. Sounds wonderful. Don’t be long.

Chapter 22

Penthouse Terrace

John needed some air, so he grabbed his jacket and went out onto the terrace. Reaching into his pocket, he felt something small and round. He pulled out a handful of pearl beads and, looking at them, he remembered the night Kristen was murdered.

Kristen walked into the seemingly empty rectory holding her cell phone.

Kristen: Brady? Baby? Are you here? I got your text telling me to meet you. I was so happy when I read that you forgive me, that you want to run away together and get married. This is my dream coming true. We can put the past behind us like nothing ever happened. Baby? Where are you Brady? ... Brady? Is that you?
Kristen gasped when she saw a figure step out from behind the curtain near Eric’s desk.
John: Surprise!
Kristen: John! You scared me. What are you doing back in Salem?
John: This is my home. I belong here. Can’t say the same for you though, can we?
Kristen: When did you get back? Does Brady know you’re in town?
John: Actually, no one knows, not yet anyway.
Kristen: Well if you wait a few minutes, you can reunite with your son, but I’d prefer it if you make yourself scarce. I’m planning to have my own reunion with Brady, and it doesn’t include you.
John: Brady’s not coming, Kristen.
Kristen: I know my relationship with Brady kills you, but we’re getting back together and there’s nothing you can do about it. If I were you, I’d worry about your own relationship with your beloved Marlena and stop interfering with your grown son’s life.
John: You’re wrong. On all counts.
Kristen: No. I’m right. I got a text from Brady and....
John: Brady didn’t send you that text. I did.
Kristen: What?
John: I needed to see you.
Kristen: Liar. You’re trying to pull that seduction crap again so that Brady will find us together.
John: I told you. Brady’s not coming.
Kristen: You’re wrong. And I’m going to prove it to you.
Kristen started to dial Brady’s number when John knocked her cell phone to the floor.
John: You’re not calling Brady, Kristen. You’ve come to the end of the line. Tonight is the last night of your life.
Kristen: Ha! You think I’m scared of you? I’m not afraid of you or anyone.
John reached into his pocket and pulled out a strand of pearls, letting them dangle from his hand.
John: Recognize these? You were going to wear them at our wedding.
Kristen: Are you on drugs? What are you talking about?
John walked behind Kristen and before she had time to react, he wrapped the pearls around her neck and started choking her with them.
Kristen: John! Stop it. This isn’t funny. I can’t breathe. Let me go.
John: What you did to Marlena’s son, that wasn’t funny either. And neither was what you did to my son. After tonight, you’ll never hurt anyone again, and that’s a fact. This is for Eric and Brady.
John tightened the pearls around her neck. She tried slipping her fingers under the pearls to give herself breathing room, but John’s hold on the strand was stronger.

As Kristen drew her last breath, John kept his stranglehold around her neck, making sure that no breath could pass through her windpipe ever again. When she fell to the floor, the strand broke, scattering pearls across the rectory floor. He kneeled down to check Kristen’s pulse before retrieving the pearls, bead by bead. He placed her cell phone and the loose beads inside his jacket pocket.

Before leaving, he glanced at Kristen on the floor. He thought he saw her chest heave. So he looked around the room and picked up a statuette of the Madonna.

John: Isn’t it ironic, Kristen? Your father is the one who turned me into a killing machine. I’ll bet he never expected to me kill his own daughter.

He lifted the statuette over his head and brought it down with full force, whacking Kristen’s skull.


“What are you doing? ... John? John, what are you doing?”

A woman’s voice broke his thoughts. Marlena stood at the terrace door.

Marlena: What are you doing out here on the terrace in the middle of the night? It’s February and it’s ice cold. Come back inside. Come back to bed.

Wow. So shocked that John is the one to kill Kristen. He was made a killer by Stefano Love that he did it for Brady and Eric. Sorry I can't feel bad that Kristen was killed after all that she has done.

That is correct. John's motive for killing Kristen was as a parent, seeking revenge and protecting against what was done to his son and to Marlena's son.
