Chapter 33 UNKNOWN LOCATION - FLASHBACK
He was surrounded by fire. A dark, terrible fire that seemed to close in on him every second. At the center of the fire was NicDevil.
ERIC: Nicole!
NicDevil laughed. She morphed into Marlena.
NICOLE (as Marlena): I'm sorry to hear that you want me to stay out of your life, son. Perhaps I really will. In fact, what son?
ERIC: No! It can't be! I apologized! She forgave me!
NicDevil morphed into Sami.
NICOLE (as Sami): What brother? He disowned our family. I have no brother.
ERIC: That...that never happened!
NicDevil morphed into Roman.
NICOLE (as Roman): What da hell were you thinkin' talkin' to your mother like dat?
ERIC: I...
NICOLE (as Roman): You disappoint me, son. You're no son of mine.
The images continued to flash around Eric. Finally, the fire stopped.
ST. LUKE'S - FLASHBACK
Eric was now on the ground, writhing in pain. He looked up at NicDevil, who was laughing.
NICDEVIL: Have you had enough yet, priest? Are you ready to accept my offer?
ERIC: I will accept nothing from you, Satan! The love i have for my Lord is greater than any power you'll ever have!
NICDEVIL: Then, I hope you enjoyed the last few minutes, because soon, they will be your life.
ERIC: What?
Something in NicDevil's face changed. Her face became softer, and more like Nicole's normally was. Her eyes went back to their normal color.
NICOLE: Eric...I...
Her eyes darkened again. NicDevil was in control again.
NICDEVIL: Silence! It is my turn to talk to him! As I was saying, get used to the imagery you just saw, priest, because it's gonna get a lot worse! Every time you close your eyes, you'll see that, and so much more. The accusations you made against others who tried to help you. Then come the illusions of abandonment. And they will become worse every time you close your eyes. And the final piece of the puzzle will always be me. I'll be watching you. You'll see me everywhere! Especially, in your nightmares!
NicDevil flew out of St. Luke's, leaving Eric on the floor |

Chapter 34 ST. LUKE'S Eric stood in front of the congregation, lost in thought. It was only when one of the deacons cleared their throat that Eric looked back up to the congregation. ERIC: As I said, I'm back. And I am very happy to be here preaching for you. i recognize almost all of you. And those whom I do not recognize, I look forward to meeting. Before we begin our usual service, i would just like you all to bow your heads and pray with me. The congregation bowed their heads and folded their hands, as did Eric. ERIC: The cross of Christ be with us; The cross of Christ overcomes all water and every fire; The cross of Christ overcomes all weapons; The cross of Christ is a perfect sign and blessing to our souls. May Christ be with us and our body during all our lives. At day and at night. Now we pray, we the congregation and leaders of St. Luke's Catholic Church, pray God the Father For the soul's sake, and we pray God the Son for the Father's sake, And we pray God the Holy Ghost for the Father's and Son's sake, And we pray God the Holy Ghost for the for the Father's and the Son's sake, That the holy corpse of God may bless us against all evil things, words and works. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. CONGREGATION: Amen. ERIC: Amen. Eric looked up. ERIC: Our first hymn today can be found on page 265 of the red hymnal, the title is "Here I Am, Lord". Please rise to sing the introductory hymn. The congregation rose. An organ started playing. ERIC & CONGREGATION (singing): I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright... At the end of the service, Eric was shaking hands with the congregation as they walked out. When Marlena walked down the aisle, they hugged. MARLENA: Welcome back, Eric. ERIC: Thanks, mom. John walked up next to Marlena. JOHN: Great job, kid. ERIC: Thanks. Eric and John shook hands MARLENA: What are you doing this afternoon? ERIC: Nothing I can't change. JOHN: Great. You should come to lunch with us. It'll give the three of us a chance to catch up. ERIC: Sounds great, guys. Just let mw clean up a bit and I'll meet you. Where should we go? MARLENA: How does that new place over on Jackson sound? ERIC: Awesome. I'll meet you guys there in, say, 20 minutes. MARLENA: I'm looking forward to it, ERIC: Me too. Marlena and John walked away. NICOLE'S APARTMENT NicDevil looked at a picture of Marlena on her cell phone. NICDEVIL: I know exactly how I can get that priest out of my way. NicDevil laughed. |

Chapter 35 REAL GOOD EATS As they had discussed earlier, Eric met John and Marlena for lunch at a new restaurant called Real Good Eats. John was in the middle of telling the story of his and Bo's releasing of Tony. JOHN: So, we find the big guy, the one that was holding him prisoner. Of course, Tony was already freed by this point. So, he grabs a nearby katana. Bo and I had our weapons. We all drew at the same time. Bam! The big guy goes down. Still don't know who got him first. ERIC: Sounds like quite an adventure. JOHN: It was. But, I'm glad to be home now with my beautiful wife. MARLENA: And I am so glad that you made it home in one piece. Marlena and John kissed. JOHN: Either of you heard from Brady lately? ERIC: A few days ago. I'm not sure what it is, but he's been acting different lately. Ever since the whole Kristen ordeal. JOHN: Yeah, I heard Brady took it pretty hard. ERIC: Harder than we thought. But, I'll be praying for him. JOHN: Thank you. Eric stared off into the distance for a minute. ST. LUKE'S - FLASHBACK
A flashback to that night nearly a week ago, when NicDevil attacked Eric. Eric was lying on the ground, in a cold sweat.
NICDEVIL: You'll see me everywhere! Especially in your nightmares! REAL GOOD EATS MARLENA: Eric, are you okay? Eric snapped out of it. ERIC: Sorry, what? MARLENA: Are you all right? ERIC: Um, well...I, um... Eric took a deep breath. ERIC: Mom, I need to tell you something. MARLENA: Okay, what do you need to tell me? ERIC: It's about Nicole. She's the Devil. JOHN: Now, hold on, Eric. I know you're upset with Nicole, but there's no reason to call her that. ERIC: That's not what I meant. And I'm not upset with her anymore. Quite the opposite. She's upset with me, though. And, she's been possessed by the Devil. |

Chapter 36 PENTHOUSE NicDevil walked into the Penthouse. NICDEVIL: Ah, home sweet home. Just like I remember it. She looked around. NICDEVIL: Well, Marlena, I can see your taste in interior decorating hasn't gotten any better. She saw a nearby picture of Belle, Shawn-D and Claire. NICDEVIL: Ah, now what's this? A little family, with grandchildren? Well, I know what I'll have to do to that. NicDevil laughed. REAL GOOD EATS ERIC: She's been possessed by the Devil. John and Marlena blinked. JOHN: Are you serious? ERIC: I only wish that I wasn't. MARLENA: How long have you known? ERIC: Only a few days. I was planning on telling you today. And, I have. MARLENA: And you're absolutely sure? ERIC: Absolutely. It was just like how you, John, described it to me when you, mom, were possessed. Glowing eyes, supernatural abilities, a creepy-as-all-get-out laugh. MARLENA: So, it's true, then. He was right. JOHN: What? MARLENA: I've never told anyone this, but during the exorcism, the Devil took me to Hell, literally. HELL - FLASHBACK
Marlena and the Devil stand in the very bowels of Hell.
DEVIL: I'll be back, Marlena! You may have escaped me this time, but I will find you! And when I do, your whole family and this whole town shall feel my wrath! REAL GOOD EATS MARLENA: The most terrifying moments of my life. ERIC: And that must be what Nicole's going through. MARLENA: Oh, the exorcism was one of the nicer parts. What she's going through right now is much worse than just that. The Devil walks in Salem again. JOHN: Well, one thing is for sure: we need an exorcism performed here. |
