Poor Philip. Glad he is getting back to a little bit of normalcy.

I like Philip not being able to take down the Christmas tree. It makes me wonder if Philip is giving more consideration to George's words than he realizes.

I like him holding on to the tree too and maybe what you said is right but it seems more to me like when my dog died and I didn't want to get rid of the basket of her toys for a few months after she died. Sometimes, you want to let go gradually.
That said, I hope that tree is still up when Chloe comes back and they get to have a belated Christmas.

I like that the tree is up as well. I still have Taffy and Mitten's collars I just could not bring myself to throw them away. I hope that Chloe and Philip get back together not for Chloe or Philip ar the moment, but for Parker. His world is so shaken up right now.

Chapter 12, Part 2
Standing on the terrace of the condo high above the city streets, Philip stared out toward Lake Michigan. A glass of brandy was his date tonight, and he tried to convince himself that being alone on New Year’s Eve wasn’t so bad.
He put his hand in his pants pocket and felt something weighty in there. He rubbed it between his fingers, feeling the familiar textures, the grooves and the smoothness. He knew he should leave it where it was, but something compelled him to take it out.
He looked at the dog tag resting in the palm of his hand and remembered when Chloe first gave him the dog tag that he originally gave to her. She surprised him by having it inscribed with the words “I love you, Philip.” Those four little words meant everything to him.
Soon afterwards, he engraved the other dog tag with the words “I love you, Chloe.” And it was this dog tag he held in his hand now -- the one Chloe Fedexed to him, along with her engagement ring. Souvenirs of a beautiful love affair.
The condo was filled with odds and ends like these, evidence that the life he had with Chloe and Parker was really real. That was the reason he left the Christmas tree standing, and it was the reason he held on to Chloe’s favorite tea mug. It was why he left her face creams, cleansers and serums in the medicine cabinet when there was barely enough room in there for his shaving razor, and why her favorite shampoo remained in the shower stall, and it was why all the pictures of Parker were left on display around the apartment. It was as if Philip needed physical proof that it wasn’t just a fantasy.
The wind whistling through the screen whipped around the terrace and caused the flowers in Chloe’s planter to sway with the breeze. The motion of the flowers caught Philip’s eye. Chloe had purchased some frost-tolerant perennials and a planter last year, and she created a miniature garden on the terrace. She called it her little sanctuary and she often sat out here holding Parker on her lap, reading to him, and drinking her herbal tea.
She said the little garden was “practice for the real thing,” for when they had a real home. They often talked about moving into a house in the suburbs, and Chloe dreamed about having enough space for a huge garden. Philip joked that she’d be in charge of mowing the lawn, but she wasn’t deterred. She had already designed the landscaping in her mind, down to the color palette of the flowers.
The flowers here on the terrace were starting to look a little sad from neglect. “Ah, let ‘em die,” Philip mumbled to himself. Right now, Philip felt the urge to pick up the planter and hurl it off the balcony along with both dog tags, and, if it weren’t for the screened enclosure, he just might have done it. But instead, he picked up a small box of plant food and sprinkled some on the flowers. Clearly, he wasn’t quite ready to let them die just yet.
He pulled off his tie and was about to flop into the chaise lounge when the doorbell rang. His brow knit wondering who’d be showing up on a night like this without calling first.
Philip headed for the front door, turned the doorknob and opened it. And there stood the last person he ever expected to see again.
To be continued ...

Grrr...still have to wait to find out who's at the door. It sounds like it would be Chloe but that's probably too obvious. Maybe Daniel w/ Parker?

I hope Philip doesn't hold on too tightly to those memories. Eventually he will have to move on. Chloe may or may not ever come back.

Man, I can't BELIEVE you are making us wait until FRIDAY to find out who is at the door. That is cruel and unusual punishment my friend!! So glad that Phillip is keeping all the reminders around but unless it is Chloe at the door, eventually he is going to have to start getting rid of things. Not the pictures of Parker (or the flowers) but the other stuff.

I'm glad that Philip isn't letting go of his life with Chloe and Parker. I hope he realizes that he can still have a wonderful future with them. It may not be exactly what they planned but life rarely is.

She would understand this loss. It happened to her when she was married to him...losing him....losing her unborn child...and even Parker in a way.
