Chapter 11 HOTEL NICOLE: I kept trying to find you. I had a few leads, but nothing concrete. When you arrived in Salem, I thought you looked familiar. That's part of why I helped you with the baby. At that time, I didn't know why you looked familiar, or that I would soon meet and lose my first ever granddaughter. I got my suspicions when you came back early last month. So, I took a lock of your hair and had it tested. I had it triple checked. The perfect match. You're my daughter. Mia stood up. NICOLE: Mia, I'm sorry! I didn't know then what I know now! Had I known...things might have been different. But, one thing is true: I thought I was doing what was best for you. There was no way that I could keep you safe while living under my father's roof. I loved you too much to let you suffer through that. And, I'm sorry that your life wasn't as good as it should have been. But I never stopped looking. I never stopped loving you. Mia walked over and hugged Nicole. MIA: I understand. Really, I do. You did what you thought was best for me. Actually, you did what you had to do to protect me. I get it. And I'm not mad. Nicole and Mia spent quite a while discussing things. Later that night, Nicole had gone out. Mia sat in their room watching TV. It wasn't anything special, just the news. That's when it happened. During the football scores, the picture and sound cut out. The screen went black. There was a low buzzing noise. Suddenly, a new picture was on the screen. A man wearing a mask appeared. Behind him was a corrugated metal sheet used as the background. The sheet swayed from side to side. MIA: What the...? The man was talking, but no words could be heard. The buzzing drowned him out. As wuickly as he had appeared, he disappeared. The screen went black. The mN had been on just long enough for Mia to be slightly creeped out by him. The screen went back to the news. The sports anchor, Chris Fischer, was still there. FISCHER (somewhat flustered): Well, if you're wondering what that was...so am I. Mia was wondering. What was that? Who was that? And what was the point? Why would someone interrupt a sports broadcast for all of 20 seconds and not even say anything. True, he had been trying to say something, but the low buzzing had drowned him out. And now, Mia was rather concerned. All she knew is, the mask she had seen looked like it was modled after the 1980s Coke sponsor and TV show host Max Headroom.

Too weird. I doubt it's a coincidence that Mia saw that.

I got the chills when Mia hugged Nicole.
I am wondering if the broadcast interrupted was Paul. Now I'm worried about Nicole. I hope she gets back soon.

Chapter 12 HOTEL Mia had changed the channel. She wasn't really watching it, she just didn't want to have to see that thing from earlier, whatever it was. Nicole had come back and Mia had told her everything. NICOLE: So, what did the mask look like? MIA: I don't know. I've never seen one like that before. NICOLE: Someone interrupted a broadcast signal before. But, that was ages ago. It wasn't even in this city. It was now shortly after 11 at night. Suddenly, Mia and Nicole's attention was drawn to he TV. The picture had cut out. And here he was again, the same man in the Max Headroom mask, a corrugated metal sheet swaying behind him. The same low buzzing was going on. However, this time, they could hear him speaking. His voice was highly distorted. MAN: That does it! He's a freakin' nerd! MIA: What? MAN: I'm better than Eric Glasser, freakin' nerd! The man laughed and held up a bag of Skittles. MAN: Taste the rainbow. The man threw the bag at the camera. MAN (singing): I've seen fire and I've seen rain... Now, the man was cracking up. He was humming the Hawaii Five-O theme NICOLE: My god... MAN: I stole NBC. I made a giant masterpiece for all the Broadcasting National Comany nerds! Then, the man picked up some nearby papers. MAN: Ooh! My piles! He then sat the papers down, picked up a glove, and put it on. MAN: He's got he other one, but it's dirty. Looks like there's blood on it. The man took off the glove and threw it at he camera. The scene hen changed: the man was bent over, his rear exposed. He had taken the mask off and was holding it up to his rear. A person in a pink dress is standing behind the man. The person in the dress starts smacking the man with a fly swatter. MAN: They're coming to get me! Then the screen went black and returned to the show which had been interrupted. MIA: What was that? NICOLE: He's back. MIA: Who's back? NICOLE: The Max Headroom broadcast hijacker. MIA: What does that mean?

Previews for Next Week MIA: I'm scared. J.T.: Why? MIA: Because of everything that happened last night. I feel like someone's trying to come after me. J.T.: I can probably find someone to protect you. MIA: I'd rather have you protect me.

Chapter 13 HOTEL MIA: Nicole, what the hell was that? Have you seen something like that before? NICOLE: Only once. A long time ago. 1987, to be exact. I was living in Chicago at the time. One night in late November that year, I was watching the nine o' clock news. During the sports highlights, the man you just saw on the TV screen popped up. He was only on for 20 seconds. Later, I was watching channel 11. It was 11:15 at night, and it happened again. Same guy. Only this that time, like this time, he spoke. Similarly to this time, it was just random nonsense. MIA: Who is he? NICOLE: I don't know. No one knows. MIA: What was that a mask of? NICOLE: Oh, that? That was a mask modeled after one of the greatest TV characters in the 1980s: Max Headroom. MIA: Who? NICOLE: Max Headroom. It was an American TV series based on a British TV movie. Max Headroom used to be a human news reporter named Edison Carter in a dystopian future where TV rules the world. Then one day, Carter got a massive head injury when he hit his head on a sign that read "Max. Head Room: 2.3". Some scientist turned him into the first computer generated man. Remembering only the sign he'd hit his head on, He took the name Max Headroom, and became the most watched channel out there. Here, I'll show you a clip. Nicole got out a laptop, typed in a website and showed Mia a video. Click to watch: MIA: That was kinda funny. NICOLE: And now one more. Click to watch: MIA: I love this guy! NICOLE: So did I. Unfortunately, Max was way ahead of his time. The show got cancelled after only 14 episodes. The world wasn't quite ready for Max and his brand of humor. MIA: Do you think they'll ever find who did it? I mean, interrupted the broadcasts tonight and in 1987? NICOLE: I doubt it. It's been 25 years, and they haven't found him yet. But, never say never. MIS: So, about the reason we came here, to train me. NICOLE: Yeah? MIA: I just got an idea as to how I can snag a guy.
