VIENNA OPERA

The opera was well into the second half when the taxicab finally dropped him off. At the box office, Philip paid for a ticket and took a seat in the second mezzanine. This was the first time he had ever seen Chloe sing professionally, even though he really couldn’t see her very well from that distance. But there she was, both within reach and outside his reach at the same time.

And it was driving him crazy. He was anxious and restless and it was so hard to sit still. He was happy that he had this opportunity to see her perform, yet he couldn’t wait for the show to be over. He could feel his heart beating so fast, he wondered if everyone in the audience could hear it as well. Looking at the people around him, he saw how they were glued to Chloe’s performance. And he smiled. Because he knew that it was him, only him, who would have the pleasure of her company after the opera ended. He could hardly wait to surprise her.

Just after the opera ended, he made his way backstage to the dressing rooms. There was a crowd of people around Chloe and she was signing autographs and chatting with the dignitaries Brady had mentioned.

Philip hung back, not wanting her to see him among the crowd. He wanted to surprise her when she was alone. And, at last, she was.

She had gone behind the screen to change into her street clothes when she heard the lock to the dressing room door click. She got a little nervous.

Chloe: Hello? Who’s there? Wer ist da?

No one answered, so Chloe quickly put on her robe and went to the other side of the screen. Her eyes grew wide and her breath caught when she saw him.

Chloe: Philip.
Philip: Hello Chloe.
He smiled at her and, hard as it was, he forced himself not to move from his spot near the door. He needed her to come to him this time. He just needed to know she was glad to see him and still wanted him.

Chloe was shocked to see him here and it took her a minute to regain her composure. The common-sense side of her brain knew he shouldn’t have come and it would be wrong to go running into his arms. But to her emotional side, his smile felt like home, and the truth was, she was never so happy to see anyone in her life. Her emotional side prevailed and she rushed into his arms.

Like magnets, their lips locked and they held each other closer and closer. Bit by bit, they edged over to the divan and fell onto it. Sheer instinct took over as they undressed and made love as if it were the most natural thing for them to be doing. Afterward, Chloe ran her fingers through Philip’s hair as his head rested upon Chloe’s chest, listening to her heartbeat as his own heart rate returned to normal. His hands continued traveling up and down her body, unable to keep from touching her, kissing her hands and her face.

Philip: Do you have any idea how much I missed you?
Chloe: I missed you too, Philip. More than I even realized. But ... why didn’t you tell me you were coming?
Philip: I figured you knew. Didn’t ... didn’t Brady tell you?
Chloe shook her head.
Chloe: No. He rarely talks to me at all. Like I told you when we were stranded during the blizzard, he lives in his own world. I don’t even feel like we’re a married couple anymore. If I did, I ... I wouldn’t be doing something like this.
Philip lifted his head and searched her eyes.
Philip: Something like what?
Chloe: Like this. Having an affair.
Philip: This isn’t just an affair, Chloe. You know that, right?
Chloe looked into Philip’s eyes, but she didn’t answer.
Philip: I plan to be with you forever, Chloe. As soon as possible.
Chloe: I don’t know, Philip. Everything is so complicated ....
Philip: Don’t tell me you don’t know. I know you do. I know you want the same thing I want. You can’t have forgotten all the things we said in the cabin.
Chloe: Of course I haven’t forgotten. But I also haven’t forgotten that we’re both married and what we’re doing is wrong.
Philip: It’s not wrong, Chloe. This is right. We’re right. You’re the only thing that’s right in my life, Chloe. I love you so much.
Before she could say another word, he kissed her lips. He held her face in his hands, before his fingers meandered over her shoulders, and traveled down to her chest. His fingertips glided over her nipples and lingered there, gently drawing circles upon their soft silky surface. She moaned and writhed with pleasure and any second thoughts or worries she was having evaporated. She responded by kissing him more and more deeply, her arms tightening their hold on him, her legs locking his body against hers, urging him to make love to her again.
Chloe: Don’t stop.
His warm breath tickled her ear and caused her to shiver as he whispered.
Philip: I couldn’t stop if I tried. Only ... last time was too fast. This time, we’re gonna take it nice and slow.

I loved the chapter. Loved Philip saying that he wants to be with Chloe forever. Her dressing room was the perfect place for a rendezvous. I can't blame Chloe for wanting Philip to make love to her again.
