Chapter 11
Philip couldn’t sleep. A usual occurrence, these days. As he made his way down the hall, he was surprised to see a dim light coming from the kitchen, and even more surprised to find Maggie sitting at the table with a cup of tea.
He smiles warmly when she looks up at him, “Hi… I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
“Oh, no, of course you’re not. Come on, have a seat…” She gestures to the table, “Can I get you a cup of tea?”
“No thanks,” Philip smiles as he takes a seat at the table.
“I forgot… you’re a warm milk insomniac.” Maggie gets up from the table with a smile and heads to the refrigerator to appease her midnight company.
“Maggie, you don’t need to make me anything.”
“I want to,” She glances over her shoulder.
“Thanks.” Philip chuckles slightly, shaking his head, “This reminds me of when Melanie and I lived with you. We spent many sleepless nights together, didn’t we?”
“We did,” She nods as she continues to prepare his soothing beverage, “I don’t know what I would have done without your company. It was such a blessing to have you and Melanie with me.”
“It was a blessing for us too. I mean, it was really the first time I ever felt like part of a real family.” He smiles, “You know, a family free of business deals and wacky step mothers traipsing in and out.”
“Yes, I can imagine your childhood was nothing less than abnormal.” Maggie chuckles.
“But, I feel like that now too. You’ve done wonders for this family.” Philip smiles.
“Philip, that’s such a nice thing to say.” Maggie looks back at him, warmly.
“Well, it’s true. As much as I love my father… this house was never a warm and cozy family home when I was growing up. Always some kind of drama happening. It’s so different now and I’m so grateful Parker has such a warm and loving home to grow up in. All thanks to you.”
“Philip,” Maggie shakes her head emotionally, as she returns back to the table, “That’s so sweet, but I won’t take that much credit. Your father has changed a lot in his old age. That’s why I love him. It’s a whole package.” She sets the milk in front of him and takes her seat.
“Thanks,” He smiles, “I know that it is. I guess what I’m trying to say is… You’re a special kind of person, that’s all.” He shrugs.
“Thank you. As you are.” Maggie smiles, before taking a drink of her tea.
Philip smiles before sipping his milk, “Is it safe to say your insomnia has something to do with the hearing tomorrow?”
“Yes,” She nods, “I think I’m a little nervous and wound up about that. Every time I close my eyes, I have a nightmare about being on the stand and not being able to get out everything I want to say.” She shakes her head, “I can’t imagine how Melanie feels going through all of this… I mean, if this is what’s happening to me and I only have to do it once.”
“I know. Hopefully it will all be over soon. Is she doing okay?” Philip questions rather sheepishly, following with a long sip of milk.
“She’s hanging in there.” Maggie nods.
“I saw her the other day. She probably told you.”
“No,” Maggie’s eyes widen, “She didn’t tell me. When did you see her?”
“Just the other day. After she had been to court and she came here to get the baby. I forgot something in my office and we really just ran into each other by chance.”
“Did you talk?” She asks cautiously.
“Yeah,” He nods, “We did, for a little while. I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable though, so I kind of blew her off .I hope I didn’t hurt her feelings, but I just didn’t want to make anything harder than it is.”
“She’s very sorry that things have to be this way, Philip. I hope that you know that.” Maggie watches as Philip nods silently, “I just hope that once all of this custody hearing is over, things will be able to change. She can’t let Chad control her forever. She has to take a stand at some point and live her own life.”
“I agree, but I know that she is scared. It’s just so unlike her. I’ve never known Melanie to be so intimidated by anyone’s power, you know?”
“I know,” Maggie nods in agreement, “It is a different side of her. I think it comes from motherhood. She has the responsibility of Sophie’s life and it has changed her outlook. Unfortunately, it hasn’t changed Chad’s.”
“He’s only going to get worse. And become more of a conniving manipulative asshole.” Philip meets Maggie’s wide eyes, “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. I feel the same way.”
“Well, I know that whatever you have to say tomorrow will certainly help Melanie’s case… Especially knowing that she has you and such a supportive family.” Philip speaks softly.
“We can only hope…” She takes a deep breath, “All we can do is tell the truth. Do our best to let the judge know what type of person Melanie is. I just hope I can do that well enough.”
“You can,” Philip smiles, “I wouldn’t worry too much about it.”

Chapter 12
Daniel took his seat at the courtroom bench, drawing a deep breath and wringing his hands as Jonathan approached. Looking past him he could see Melanie sitting at the table, with Maggie a row behind her in the gallery. He looks up attentively as Jonathan begins his questioning.
“Mr. Jonas, You know your daughter in both the work and home setting, correct?”
“Yes,” Daniel nods, “Melanie and I have worked together since she began as a volunteer and now a nurse at University hospital.”
“Let’s start with how you would describe her work ethic… What kind of a nurse is your daughter?”
“She’s incredible,” Daniel smiles, “She’s an extremely efficient and intelligent nurse. With her caring personality, she always has patients asking for her. Melanie is very personable. She creates very strong bonds with people, even patients that may be in the hospital for a short time. Melanie will know their story and all that she can about their life so that she is able to care for them in the best way possible.”
“So it’s safe to say that she is very well-liked by her colleagues?” Jonathan paces past the witness stand and takes a post off to the side.
“Extremely,” He emphasizes, “I don’t think you would find a single person in that hospital that could have a bad thing to say about Melanie. There just isn’t anything bad. She’s an amazing nurse. And always looking for ways to help out her colleagues. The nurses and doctors, alike, love working with Melanie.”
“Okay,” Jonathan nods, “Now if you could please tell us a little bit about Melanie as your daughter.”
“I don’t really know where to start.” Daniel meets eyes with Melanie.
“You and Melanie didn’t always know that you were father and daughter, correct?”
“Correct,” Daniel nods, “I didn’t know that Melanie was my daughter until about 5 years ago.”
“Did you know her before then?”
“Yes, we had been working together at the hospital for at least a year or so.”
“What were your feelings when you found out she was your daughter?”
“After the initial shock wore off, I felt nothing but pure joy,” Daniel meets eyes with Maggie, who smiles through tear-filled eyes, “I was thrilled to know that I had a daughter… and completely elated that it was Melanie. We didn’t have to try very hard to develop any kind of connection or bond because, well, with her it’s so easy.” Daniel catches Melanie bringing her hand to her cheek to wipe a falling tear.
“So you and Melanie are close.”
“Very,” He nods, “I couldn’t ask for a better daughter… we have an amazing relationship.”
“How would you describe Melanie as a mother.”
“She’s an amazing mother. She loves Sophie more than anything in the world and would do anything for her. She’s attentive and caring and loving.”
“Is there any doubt in your mind of your daughter’s capability to care for her child?”
“None. There is no one more capable to take care of Sophie than Melanie.” Daniel speaks firmly.
“No further questions.” Jonathan takes his seat beside Melanie.
Daniel meets her eyes, before Chad’s lawyer approaches the bench.
“Mr. Jonas. It’s true that your relationship with your daughter’s mother was that of a one night stand, correct?”
Daniel gives a confused look, then Jonathan stands to object, “Objection, irrelevant.”
“Sustained.” She addresses the lawyer, “Stick to what’s necessary, please.”
“My apologies, your honor.” He nods back to Daniel, “Before you knew that your child was indeed, Melanie Jonas, you knew of her and her reputation, correct?”
“Yes, I worked with her at University Hospital.”
“So you are aware of the antics that your daughter was involved in before you knew that she was your daughter…”
“I was aware of her existence before I knew of our relation, but I don’t think I was told of any antics…” Daniel lowers his brow in skepticism.
“Well, such things as her affair with Philip Kiriakis while he was involved with another woman and the sex tape that was released on the internet?”
“From what I understand that tape was made without my daughter’s knowledge.”
“But you acknowledge that she had an intimate encounter with Philip Kiriakis, while fully aware he was involved with another woman?”
Daniel looks down, taking a deep breath, he nods, “Yes.” He meets Melanie’s gaze with remorseful eyes.
*****
“Mrs. Kiriakis, you took Miss Jonas into your home when she was just a friend of your nephews, correct?” Chad’s lawyer approaches the bench where Maggie sits with her legs crossed and hands in her lap.
“Yes.” Maggie nods, “Melanie was a friend of my nephew Nick.”
“Nick, he had to practically beg you to take Melanie in, did he not?”
“He had to ask me… I wouldn’t say beg.” Maggie spoke sternly, growing uncomfortable with this line of questioning.
“Well, it’s safe to say that you didn’t exactly trust Melanie when you first met her, correct?”
“No,” Maggie took a deep breath, her voice sharp and steady, “I recognized that Melanie was a misguided girl. She was in need of guidance, but I wasn’t sure she would be receptive to that. I was willing to open my home to her, but I was clear in that I had certain expectations that needed to be met.”
“Did she meet those expectations when jumped into bed with Philip Kiriakis, while he was involved with Stephanie Johnson?”
“As I stated before, Melanie was misguided. She was very young. She did things that hurt others, without thinking about the ramifications of her actions. By living with me, I would like to think that I helped her realize the error of her ways.” Maggie shakes her head, “Melanie’s heart is bigger than anyone I know. Her biggest problem back then was that she would fall so deeply in love with someone or something, and would become determined to get it no matter what she had to do. Her determination is one of her most admirable qualities… it just took her a little while to learn to use it in the right ways.”
“So you acknowledge that she would do whatever possible to get what she wanted, no matter who she hurt?”
“Listen, Melanie has made her fair share of mistakes. Just like everyone else in this room. There were times when others were hurt by Melanie, but there was never a time that she didn’t regret that. With maturity and guidance, she came to realize how to think of those ramifications before she followed through with her actions.” Maggie’s face softens slightly, her voice following suit, “Melanie has always been a caring person. Her empathetic nature is one of the qualities I admire most.”
“Was her empathetic nature something that contributed to her lying to the police regarding the assault of E.J Dimera in the summer of 2011?”
“She did her best to help everyone involved in that situation.”
“Actually, she convinced you and her father at one point, to aid her in hiding the crime and her involvement, did she not?”
“Objection,” Jonathan stood from his seat, “Beyond the scope of direct.”
“Sustained.” The judge nods, “Rephrase the question please. Mrs. Kiriakis can’t answer for anyone but herself.”
“Sure, your honor.” The lawyer nods, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Kiriakis. Let me ask you, Miss Jonas came to you, personally, for help with hiding that crime and her involvement. Correct?”
“Yes,” Maggie turns back to face the lawyer, giving a nod. She apologetically meets eyes with Melanie
“Now, would you say that Melanie Jonas was a responsible and respectable person when you first met her?”
“I already told you what I thought of Melanie when I first met her.” She narrows her eyes.
“Okay, let me ask you this. You are heavily involved with Alcoholics Anonymous, correct?”
“Yes.” Maggie nods.
“In those situations, you say “Once an addict, always an addict”, do you not?”
“Yes, that is true of addicts.”
“Couldn’t you say the same for one who was once selfish, manipulative, and irresponsible?”
“I would say that depends on the character and the integrity of the person you are dealing with. I can tell you that my granddaughter, Melanie Jonas, is none of those things. Her character is one of a strong, intelligent, empathetic, caring and loving woman. She is an incredible mother. And she loves from the very bottom of her heart. Her previous actions were that of survival mechanisms. Once Melanie learned how to deal with life’s ups and downs, she no longer needed to resort to her previous ways. There is no doubt in my mind that Melanie wouldn't ever go back to that again. She is a beautiful and giving person.” Maggie grows teary as she locks eyes with Melanie, “And I thank God every day for bringing her into my life.”
Chad’s lawyer studies Maggie closely, before looking down and heading to his seat. “No further questions.”
