Hello all! I like to keep my chapters rather short and this next one ran kind of long so I am breaking it into 2 parts. Part 1 tonight and part 2 tomorrow.
Chapter 8 Part 1
Jonathan’s words played over and over in Melanie’s head as she drove from the courthouse. She was thankful to have such a compassionate lawyer, who was smart and capable, but also understood her as a person. He knew what she needed even when she didn’t- and she definitely needed those people in her life- now more than ever.
So maybe he is right .Maybe everyone is right. She’s giving Chad too much power. Running scared from him is only going to drag everything on. In a way, she’s waiting for him to dig his own hole. She saw how annoyed the judge was that they called a meeting for something so foolish. Melanie just wanted him to do it himself… then he would have no one else to blame. He just wasn’t digging fast enough for her.
Melanie parked her car in the Kiriakis mansion driveway. She felt guilty for never coming to the house anymore… but Philip was there and she just couldn’t. Not to mention, Parker. That morning she had asked Maggie to meet her in the driveway to retrieve Sophie, so to avoid seeing Parker. She missed them both so much that she was afraid if she saw them she would start to go down that path again. She had to get a grip. And just be okay with being alone with her daughter. She was never going to prove to herself and everyone else that she could be a single mother and survive without a companion unless she just did it.
As Melanie exited her car and made her way to the front door the movement of another body caught her ear from behind. Really? She just left the courthouse and Chad already has his people following her here. Like it was her fault that she had to bring Sophie here on short notice.
“That’s it. This is going to end…” Melanie turned on her heels in confrontation and jumped a foot to find Philip standing in front of her, “Oh! It’s you!”
“Hey.” Philip smiles softly, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“No, it’s okay. I just thought you were someone else.” Melanie smiles nervously, shaking her head.
“Everything okay? What are you doing here?” Philip’s face displays clear concern.
“I’m fine. I had to go to court last minute this morning, so I brought Sophie here. I didn’t know you would be here.”
“Neither did I. I forgot some papers in my office.” He shakes his head and rushes past her to unlock the door, “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable… I’ll just grab those and be on my way.”
“No, wait…” Melanie follows him into the foyer, “You’re not making me uncomfortable. I just didn’t expect to see you.”
“You go out of your way not to see me, these days. I’m sure this isn’t a comfortable situation for you.” Philip chuckles as Melanie’s face falls.
“I’m sorry.”
“Hey, it’s okay. I get it. Don’t feel bad.” He shrugs; his voice noticeably softer.
“I do miss you, you know.” She looks up, wide eyed, “I really miss you.”
“I miss you too, Mel.” Philip studies her closely, “You okay?”
“Yeah,” She nods, “I just feel bad about all of this.”
“Don’t, Melanie. I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have made that comment. I guess I’m just a little stressed at work and stuff right now.” He takes a deep breath, running a hand through his hair.
“I know you must think I’ve turned into a doormat too, just like everybody else.” She crosses her arms and turns, wandering away from him.
“No,” Philip shakes his head, “Not at all. Why would you think that? And who else thinks that?”
“Everyone.” She chuckles to keep from crying, “Seems like I’m just damned if I do and damned if I don’t, these days.”
“I can’t imagine what this is like for you.”
“Yeah. Neither can I.” She turns back to him, quickly putting a smile on, “I’m fine though, Philip. I have my daughter and that’s what matters the most. Sophie is everything to me.”
“I know how that is,” Philip nods in agreement, “I feel the same way about Parker.”
“I know you do.” Melanie smiles, “You’re such a great dad. How is Parker doing?”
“Good! He loves school. He does miss you and Sophie. Asks about you every day.”
“I miss him too,” Her eyes fill with tears, “I miss you both.”
Philip nods silently, “Uh, listen, it was really good to see you… I just have to get back to the office.”
“I understand," She nods, "It was good to see you too,” She smiles nervously as she watches Philip make his way out of the room.
“Hey, Mel.” He turns back before rounding the corner, “You really should get yourself something to eat once and a while, you know?” With a raised brow he disappears down the hallway.
Melanie shakes her head before looking down and straightening her baggy clothes. She did notice that her clothes were fitting looser; stress will do that to you. But she didn’t really think that it was anything anyone else would notice. Leave it to Philip to point that out without pause.

Chapter 8 Part 2
Melanie takes a deep breath before opening the door to the living room. Maggie and Sophie greet her happily from the floor.
“Mommy’s here!!” Maggie smiles to Sophie as she lifts her up off of the floor and kisses her cheek. She holds her up for Melanie to take.
“Hi baby girl!!” Melanie showers her giggly baby with kisses, hugging her close as she looks back to Maggie, “Thank you for watching her.”
“Oh, honey, of course!” Maggie replies happily as she gets up, standing beside Melanie, “She was just a little angel, as always.”
“Such a good girl,” Melanie smiles, brushing her hand through Sophie’s wispy red curls and kissing her cheek.
“How was court?”Maggie asks as she pours Melanie a cup of coffee at the bar, bringing it back to the cocktail table.
“Thanks,” She smiles, “It was fine.”
“What was it all about?” Maggie spoke as she took a seat in the chair adjacent to Melanie, with her own coffee.
“Chad petitioned for increased visitation,” She takes a drink then sets her coffee back on the table before kissing Sophie’s cheek, “Apparently I work too much and too late hours and I’m abandoning my child by leaving her with you.”
“What?” Maggie’s face fell.
“It has nothing to do with you personally,” Melanie shakes her head; “It’s just Chad being Chad.”
“So what happened? Did he get it?”
“Nope,” She sighs, “The judge looked pretty annoyed that they called for a court meeting for something so stupid.”
“It’s not in his best interest to annoy the judge, is it?” Maggie raises an eyebrow before drinking her coffee.
“You would think the great Dimera men would know that. But apparently they think they are above it all.” She scoffs, “They probably are. All of this is probably futile and they’re gonna pay off the judge in the end anyway.”
“Melanie, don’t think like that. Chad told you he wasn’t going to play dirty.”
“And why should I believe him?” Melanie voice rises as she furrows her brow; Sophie’s small hand on her face calms her down. “I just hate the uncertainty of it all. Not knowing how this is going to turn out. I never know what the right decision is. It seems no matter what I do- it’s wrong.”
“Oh, sweetie,” Maggie shakes her head, “That’s not true. You are making all of the right choices and you are making them from your heart. Doing the best possible thing you can for your daughter.”
“I don’t feel that way,” Melanie attempts to sniff away her tears, “I feel like the whole world is against me. Like I constantly have to prove myself.”
“Unfortunately, that’s because you do. You do have to prove yourself to the court. But that’s it.” Maggie smiles softly, “Everyone that knows you knows that you are the most capable, caring, and loving mother. You don’t have to prove any of that to us.”
“And then I think about how I’m keeping Sophie from Philip and Parker. They love her so much and I’m holding her back from people who love her and care about her. What kind of mother does that?” Tears fall to her cheeks as she looks up to Maggie in question.
“One that has to do whatever she can to protect her child. There will be plenty of opportunities after all of this is over for Sophie to spend time with Philip and Parker.” Maggie watches as Melanie wipes her tears and snuggles Sophie closer to her, “Melanie, you are the most intelligent, generous, and loving person I know. You have to stop being so hard on yourself. You have to stop letting Chad determine what kind of person you are. You are not what he says you are. Far from it.”
Melanie nods solemnly, a small smile breaking to her lips, “You have to say that. You’re my grandmother.”
“Oh come on,” Maggie scoffs, “I used to say that even before I knew I was your grandmother, so don’t play that game.”
“Okay, fine,” Melanie chuckles, “Thank you. I don’t deserve you.”
“There you go again! Stop it!” Maggie sets her coffee down and joins Melanie and Sophie on the sofa, wrapping her arm around her granddaughter and kissing her head, “I love you, so much.”
“I love you too.” Melanie rests her head on Maggie’s shoulder as she hugs them both close.

I just made a few screencaps of Maggie and Melanie and I thought of you.
It was such a sweet chapter..awww.
BUT...Melanie needs to stop using Sophie as a cover...she's depriving Parker and Philip of Sophie? Yeah...I am sure that's the only reason she is upset by the separation. LOL

Chapter 9
Melanie maneuvers another spoonful of squash into Sophie’s reluctant mouth. Her little tongue pushing most of it back out and on to her chin after its arrival.
“Sophia Margaret,” Melanie shakes her head as Sophie smashes her little toy around on the high chair tray, “How did you end up so picky? You come from such a food loving family!” She watches as Sophie opens her mouth for another try, only to repeat her pattern, “I know what you want. All you ever want. Liquid diet.”
She cleans off the baby’s face before taking the dirty dish to the sink and retrieving the bottle from the warmer. Sophie’s face lights up as Melanie sets the bottle on the table and begins to unbuckle her from the highchair, lifting her out, “Grandma keeps telling me that I need to stop making this bottle an option, but I’m too afraid you would starve!” She kisses her head as she positions her comfortably in her lap and feeds her the bottle.
“You know, Sophiekins… you are my whole world.” Sophie looks up at her brightly, sucking away at her bottle, “Yes, you are. You give me purpose. And so much life. I get to watch you grow and learn every day, and I could not ask for anything more.” Melanie shakes her head, a tear falling to her cheek, “and I hope and pray that you know that even if, some day, mommy isn’t able to be with you all of the time, I still love you more than words can say.” She kisses her head and sniffs her tears, “My angel baby…”
Melanie smoothes Sophie’s hair as she drinks her bottle, before they are interrupted by a knock at the door. She looks at her watch, “It’s 2:30 already, Sophie girl. That must mean Daddy is here.” She situates Sophie semi-upright in the crook of her arm and answers the door.
“Hey,” Chad stands firmly on the other side of the door; he leans over with a smile and caresses Sophie’s cheek, “Hi babygirl!! Are you having your bottle?”
“Yeah, I just tried to give her some squash but she spit more out than she swallowed.” She watches as Chad meets her eyes and chuckles slightly, “Come in. I didn’t realize what time it was, I still have to get some of her stuff together.”
Melanie turns away from him with Sophie still in her arms. She takes her to the counter, buckling her into the bouncy seat and propping her bottle up with a blanket to help her hold it.
“So, uh,” Chad looks around the kitchen, “So you took Sophie to your grandma’s yesterday?”
“Yeah,” Melanie continues to face away from him, her face intrigued by his statement, “I didn’t really have a choice since I was called to court at such short notice.”
“She couldn’t have come here?”
“No. She was watching Parker.”
“So you just chose to ignore my specific request that Sophie not be anywhere near Philip Kiriakis.” Chad’s face was firm, eyebrows low.
Melanie took a deep breath from her stance at the counter, “Philip wasn’t there.” She knew she shouldn’t lie about it, but at this moment, it’s easier.
“Really? Not even for a second?” His voice was filled with mock curiosity.
“I don’t know, Chad,” Melanie turns around to face him, resting her body against the counter, “You seem to think you know the answer to that. Was he there?”
“How am I supposed to know? Why would I be asking?” Chad questions defensively.
“Maybe because you wanna see what I will say?” Melanie raised an eyebrow.
“Melanie, why are you messing with me?”
“I don’t know, Chad, when in Rome, you know?" She shrugs, "You come into my kitchen and aren’t even civil for 3 seconds before you start grilling me about a situation that was partially your fault.” She turns around, going back to packing Sophie’s small bag
“Okay, you know what, I probably have enough stuff at my place. You don’t have to go through all of that trouble. Sophie and I can just go.” Chad shrugs as he crosses his arms.
Melanie turns back to him with a slight smirk on her face, “Oh, why? Because for once I am actually acting like I have a backbone? Can’t handle it?”
“Melanie,” He shakes his head, “I’m not going to fight with you, that’s why. Let me just take Sophie and go.”
“Whoa,” Melanie steps in front of him as he inches toward the bouncy seat, “No. You’re not just going to take the baby and run. Not today. I think we need to get a few things straight here.”
“Come on, Melanie. Don’t be ridiculous. And you don’t need to be so confrontational in front of the baby.”
“Really,” Melanie glanced back at Sophie happily drinking her bottle and playing with the toys on the chair with her free hand, “I don’t think she will mind if we have a little talk. Besides, I might be confused but I don't think I was the one doing the confronting, just now. Come on, have a seat.”
Chad rolls his eyes as he anxiously takes a seat at the kitchen table, “What do we have to talk about?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” She shrugs, “Maybe we should start with why you have some kind of private investigator or minion or something following me around town?”
“What? What are you talking about?” Chad scoffs.
“Okay,” She rolls her eyes, “Listen, I don’t expect you to admit to it. You’re a Dimera. Feigned innocence is a Dimera trademark. I’m just letting you know that I am on to you, Chad. I might be acting laid back and going with the flow of this whole thing, but I don’t want you to forget who I am.”
“Trust me, I never could. I’m well aware of who you are and what you are capable of.” Chad nods seriously, “And I want you to know that I am on to you, too. You’re right. I know that you saw Philip yesterday. In complete defiance of my request to keep Sophie away from him. And I promise I will be letting the judge know about that.”
“So you’re admitting that you have someone following me, then? So I will be glad to let the judge know about that.”
“Melanie, why are you being so difficult?” Chad shakes his head, “What did I ever do to you?”
“What did you ever do to me?” Melanie’s eyes were wide as her voice rose, “Are you serious, Chad?! You’re trying to take my daughter away from me.” She shakes her head, “You know what. This was a bad idea. I forgot how impossible it is to communicate with you. My point is, if you try to submit any more of your “spy-cam” report to the court- I will know. I keep very close track of the things that I tell you and the things that you find out on your own.”
“Why? Do you have something to hide?” He raises an eyebrow, his voice light with question.
“No, I have a life to live, free of your control.” She gets up from the chair and zips up the small bag with things for Sophie, who is now sound asleep in her bouncy chair with her bottle tucked in the crook of her arm.
Chad gets up without comment and picks up the bag from the counter, putting it over his shoulder. He watches as Melanie carefully lifts Sophie out of the bouncy seat, transferring her to the car seat on the floor. She begins to stir from her cat nap.
“Shh, sh, sh,” Melanie soothes, “You’re going to go to Daddy’s and I’ll see you later, okay?” Sophie looks up at her with sleepy eyes before snuggling her face into her blanket and falling back to sleep. Melanie stands up, lifting the car-seat with her and hands it to Chad.
“Thanks.”
“Yep,” Melanie nods, looking down to avoid making eye contact with him, “So you’ll be back at like 7?”
“Yeah, we’ll see you then.” Chad observes Melanie closely before walking past her and out of the door.
Melanie takes a seat at the kitchen table, watching through this window as Chad’s figure disappears from view. Leaning back in the chair, she runs a hand through her hair and crosses her arms, tears falling to her cheeks.

Chapter 10
Carly looks over her shoulder from her post at the sink in Melanie’s kitchen, laughing at Daniel who is at the table trying to entertain Sophie into eating her vegetables. Unsuccessfully, of course, but somehow he’s convinced that he can make her like them.
“You know, you’re gonna wear that, right?” Carly remarks as she scrubs the pan in front of her.
“”No,” Daniel stops short when Sophie hits the spoon and strained peas cover his whole hand, “It’s just a little messy. Nothing I can’t handle. Right, squirt?” Sophie smiles brightly from behind a mouth covered in various baby food varieties.
“As much as she loves you, I still don’t think you are going to defeat her with these vegetables.”
“Listen, granny,” Daniel chuckles as Carly throws him a glare over her shoulder, “This isn’t a competition. I’m not trying to defeat. We are trying to overcome, here. As a partnership, right Soph?” He watches as another attempt goes sour and the peas from her mouth cover the last clean spot on her bib. “But, we’ve seem to have run out of room on this food catcher… shall we throw in the towel for tonight?” Sophie kicks her legs excitedly as Daniel leans over, smooching her cheek.
Carly smiles as she approaches with a wet washcloth, and tries her best to clean Sophie as Daniel gathers the dirty dishes, “I think we’re going to need to give you a bath!”
“I think I might need a bath too,” Daniel remarks as he glances down at his hand and arm, taking a wet paper towel for clean up. In the process, he notices a few court papers on the counter. His demeanor changes, “Well, I wonder how things are going to go tomorrow.”
“In court?” She looks up from cleaning Sophie, “I’m sure it will be fine. Are you nervous?”
“Not really,” He shrugs as he turns around, then nods, “I mean, yeah, I am a little bit. I just feel like my girls futures are in my hands. I mean it isn’t all on my shoulders but I know that mine and my mom’s testimony is going to hold a lot of weight for the judge. I just hope I can handle the lawyer’s questions. I get nervous when I’m being interrogated.”
“Do you get interrogated often, Mr. Jonas?” Carly smiles as she lifts Sophie from the high chair, placing her on her hip.
“Well you know what I mean. I’m not worried so much about Jonathan’s questioning because I know that he is on our side. I don’t know how I feel about the cross examination, though.”
“Don’t let yourself be intimidated. You are a very smart, well spoken man.” Carly smiles as she approaches with smiling Sophie in her arms.
“Thanks,” Daniel chuckles at Sophie’s sweet smiling face, he holds his arms out as Carly hands the baby over, “Who knew being a grandpa was so great, huh?” He smiles down at Sophie who has rested her head against his shoulder.
“Well, when you have an angel as precious as this one…” Carly caresses her granddaughter’s cheek, before looking up and meeting Daniel’s twinkling eyes, “What?”
“Nothing,” He shrugs, his smile never wavering, “I just love being around you. And seeing you so happy.”
“Well thank you, grandpa.” Carly smiles, before meeting him in a kiss, “I feel the same way about you. I’m so glad we get to experience this new phase in our life together.”
“It’s nice, isn’t it?” Daniel raises an eyebrow, “I guess this is what people call full circle, right?”
“Something like that, I guess.” Carly smiles at Sophie, whose eyes are now growing heavy. “She always falls asleep with you like that. She must really trust her grandpa.”
“I hope so. I want to be a good person for her. Someone she can count on.”
“You are. You don’t ever have to worry about that. You are that for her and her mother. More than I think you could ever realize.”
“Okay…” Daniel smirks before walking over to the table and taking a seat, Sophie comfortably in slumber.
“Do you think we should put her down?”
Daniel shakes his head as he admires the peaceful baby in his arms, “You know Soph, she’ll only nap for a few minutes before she’s ready to go.”
“You’re right. You want some tea?” Carly questions.
“Sure.” He replies before kissing Sophie’s head.
As Carly prepares the tea, she glances over, becoming fixated on the site of Daniel and Sophie. He catches her stare.
“What?”
“Hmm?” She raises her brow in question, “Oh, nothing.” She pours their cups of tea and comes to the table.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” Carly reaches over and brushes her hand along Sophie’s soft red hair, “Sometimes I still can’t believe that we are grandparents. And that things have turned out the way that they have, you know?”
“Yeah… the grandparent thing kind of messes with my head sometimes.” Daniel chuckles, “But you’re really surprised at how things have turned out? You know, with me and you?”
Carly glances up; his question catching her slightly off guard, “Well… yeah. I mean, I didn’t really think that we would end up here. Together.” She shrugs, “I don’t know. I guess I just never thought it was an option.”
“Really?” Daniel tilted his head in question.
“Yeah,” Carly shrugs, smiling slightly, “I take it you don’t feel the same way.”
“Well… It’s complicated. But I've always been drawn to you. I have always felt you and I had a connection. But I just chocked it up to our daughter, you know a parental bond or whatever. But it’s definitely more than that. For me, at least.”
“For me too…” She smiles, “I love you, Daniel. I’m so happy now. Happier than I have been in a long time.”
“So am I.” Daniel smiles. He pauses for a moment then takes his free hand and reaches in the pocket of his pants. "You know, I've been waiting to talk to you about something..."
"What?" She questions before taking a sip of her tea.
"I've been thinking that maybe..." He watches Carly intently as he speaks before she suddenly looks up when the door opens.
“Hi,” Melanie whispers when she sees Sophie sleeping on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Hi, baby!” Carly gets up to greet Melanie, as Daniel chuckles to himself and carefully puts the article back in his pocket before turning and smiling to his daughter.
“Dad, it looks like you have a comfy shoulder.” Melanie smiles as she brushes her hand along Sophie’s face, then leans down to kiss her.
“I guess so.” Daniel smiles, “We weren’t sure if we should put her to bed… it’s kind of early.”
They both look down as Sophie stirs, opening her eyes. Daniel careful lifts her from his shoulder and hands her to Melanie who sits down across from him at the table.
“Hi, princess.” Melanie positions her daughter in the crook of her arm, Sophie gripping her finger tightly. Her eyes blinking sleepily.
“We attempted some vegetables today… can’t say that we succeeded.” Carly chuckles as she stands behind Daniel, putting her hands on his shoulders.
“We didn’t attempt anything. The vegetable trial was all me and Sophie. Granny wanted nothing to do with it.” Daniel laughs as Carly playfully slaps him in the back of the head.
“Well, I appreciate all of the effort.” Melanie chuckles, “Thank you both so much for being so great.”
“Oh, come on…” Her father protests.
“No, I’m serious.” Melanie’s eyes grow teary, “I can’t thank everyone enough for all of their help through everything. Sophie and I are so lucky.”
Daniel leans over, brushing his hand along Melanie’s hair, “You don’t have to worry about thanking us. We love you both and we want to help you in whatever way we can.”
“Your father is right,” Carly nods, “We are happy to help. And all of the thanks that we need is to see your smiling face.”
Melanie nods, sniffling her tears; she looks down at Sophie, placing a kiss on her forehead, “We are so lucky, little girl.” She smiles back to her parents, “So lucky.”
