THE LAKE HOUSE
It was a dreary rainy Sunday, and the weather matched Chloe’s mood as she sat on the cushioned leather window seat and watched the rain drizzling through the windowpanes of Philip’s study. Through the rain-blurred window glass, she could see 14 yellow ribbons hanging from the tree in the front yard.
Chloe hoped no one would come over today. She was well aware that everyone meant well -- Bo, Hope, Lucas, Brady, Nicole, even Daniel -- but their presence did nothing for her. They weren’t comforting, even though they tried to be. They said the right things but they couldn’t know how Chloe really felt. She just wanted to be alone and she couldn’t wait until they left. She hated getting emotional in front of people. She learned as a child to keep her emotions to herself and she was far more comfortable presenting a brave front than crying. And she did a lot of crying these days.
As she listened to the soothing sounds of the falling rain, she held the letter in her hands, the letter that Philip wrote to her before he left. He placed it on her pillow before leaving, and she found it there that night when she was getting ready for bed. When she first read it, she thought it was sweet and sappy and romantic and so Philip. But she found herself reading it every day, and it took on new importance after he was reportedly taken hostage.
Now the notepaper was somewhat worse for the wear, from folding and unfolding, from tears and from fingerprints. She read the letter to Wesley a couple times too. Even though she knew the letter by heart, Chloe ran her fingertips over the words on the stationery, and read it once again.
“Dear Chloe, Wes and Phloe,
I’ve been staring at this piece of paper for a half hour. If my heart could write instead of my hand, this sheet of paper would be filled. I don’t even know how to tell you how much I’m going to miss you all.
I’m so proud of you, Chloe. Watching you realize your dream of singing opera makes me so happy. I feel like I finally understand the real meaning of love, and it’s different than I thought it would be. It’s caring more about other people than you do about yourself. And seeing you happy and fulfilled is what makes me happiest.
Remember how you were talking about performing opera being your dream come true? Well, you’re my dream come true, Chloe. And having Wes in our lives and a second baby on the way is just icing on the cake. Even with all the crap we’ve been through these past two years -- make that 12 years -- I still feel like the luckiest man alive.
It’s going to be a long few weeks but I’ll carry the three of you here in my heart always.
All my love, Philip (Daddy)”
Chloe’s tears turned into sobs as she read the last line, especially the word Daddy in parentheses. Her children needed him. She needed him.
Chloe: Oh god Philip. Wherever you are, please be safe. Please come back to us.

MIDDLE EAST
Philip stared into the darkness of the room he was in. He wasn’t sure what day of the week it was anymore, but he was trying to keep track so he’d know how far Chloe’s pregnancy had progressed since he left.
Chloe practically begged him not to go and he should have listened to her. He should have tried harder to find a way out of the assignment. How could he abandon his very pregnant wife and his young son who’s already had a tumultuous life? And now, who knows when or if he’ll get home.
He was so worried about Chloe, he could barely stand it. Being apart like this was unbearable. And he knew how much she would be worrying about him. That couldn’t be good for her or the baby. If only he could get word to her that he was alive. If only he could talk to her. Oh how he longed to see her again, to touch her, to hear her voice, to hold her and tell her he loved her. If only.
He and his colleagues were ordered to leave their mobile phones behind when they went into hiding. They couldn’t risk the possibility that a signal would be traced. The day of the bombing, the biophysicists led the biofuel team from the lab through a tunnel that connected to an underground bunker. The shelter was a little small for all 10 of them, but there were enough provisions to last a year, if necessary. The important thing is, it was impenetrable and the group was safe. Nothing could get in and nothing could get out, not even a phonecall.
From his cot, he looked around the room at the other detainees sleeping on cots. Everyone here had a story. Everyone had a husband or wife or significant other or parents and children they missed. He was the only one, however, whose wife was nearly 8 months pregnant.
