Happy FINALLY Weekend to everyone! Here's an update to hopefully kick off a few days of relaxation for everyone. I hope I did Melanie/Phillip fans justice in this chapter. Tried my best.
Enjoy.
Chapter 15 Phillip arrived at the hospital, but was informed by Maxine that Melanie was in her physical therapy session. He took the time to make a few business calls, using the waiting room as a somewhat makeshift office.
Daniel came around the corner, spotting Phillip, he walked to the waiting area. “Phillip?”
He looked up at the mention of his name, “Daniel, Hi…”
“Hey… How are you doing?” Daniel asked cautiously before sitting down in a chair adjacent to Phillip.
He nodded with a smile, “I’m good. Is Melanie still in therapy?”
“Uh, yeah…” He looked at his watch, “She should be back in her room shortly. I’m sure she’ll be exhausted.”
“Do you think I should come back later?” His voice grew concerned, and he couldn’t help but be a little uneasy around Daniel, “I want her to be able to get whatever rest she needs.”
“No…” He shook his head, “She’ll be really happy to see you. She was asking about you all morning.”
Phillip looked away from Daniel with a simple nod of his head, “Listen, Daniel…I…” He looks up at him, “I hope this isn’t too awkward for you. I mean… you probably never thought you would ever have to deal with me as a son-in-law ever again and now this…”
“You know, Phillip… it’s actually not like that at all.” He smiles, “I’m really impressed by you… by the way you are handling this whole situation. Not to mention extremely grateful. Without you here, I don’t really know what we would have done.”
He shrugs, “I’m just glad I’m able to help a little… as complicated as it may be, it makes me feel good to know I can help Melanie.” He pauses, “I mean… after everything.”
Daniel nods, “I understand. I really do.”
“Thanks,” Phillip smiles to Daniel, following his eyes as he watched Maxine wheel Melanie into her room.
“I guess she’s out of therapy!” Daniel smiles as he gets up, Phillip following suit, “Give Maxine a few minutes to get her settled and then you can go in.”
Phillip nods, “Okay… Thanks.”
“Thank
you, Phillip… I have a few patients to check on. Tell Melanie I will see her in a little while.”
Phillip nods as Daniel walks away. He checked his phone one more time and noticed his own hand shaking. He put his hands back in his pocket and took a deep breath. He wasn’t sure why he was so nervous about seeing Melanie, maybe just the notion of having so much riding on his shoulders. Phillip had to make sure not to cause any suspicion with Melanie, and with the revelation of her pregnancy, it was getting harder and harder. He’s pulled from his thoughts and looks up when he sees Maxine exit Melanie’s room with a smile, as she spots Phillip.
“Hi, Maxine,” He walks towards her.
“Phillip… Melanie was hoping you were here. You can see her now.”
“Thanks…” He slowly walks toward the room and opens the door.
Melanie’s face brightens a thousand shades when she sees Phillip, “I’ve been waiting for you!”
He smiles as he closes the door behind him and makes his way to her bedside. He takes her hand and leans over for a light kiss on the cheek, only to be surprised when his lips are met by Melanie’s. Reaching her hand out and gripping his tie, she pulls him closer. Closing her eyes, she deepens the kiss. As they release from the lock of their lips, Phillips eyes are wide with surprise. Melanie smiles sweetly, “And I’ve been waiting for that, too.” Her eyes twinkle with delight.
He clears his throat in an effort to recover as he sits down, a smirk resting on his swollen lips.
“It seems you must have thought I was too fragile or something…” She rolls her eyes.
He chuckles, “Maybe I was being a little too careful…”
“Yes.” She giggles, “You were.”
“How was your therapy? I’m sure you’re tired…”
She sighs as she rests her head back on the pillow, “No… I’m not. I’m too happy to be tired.”
He looks down, knowing what she is referring to.
“My dad told me… about our baby…” Her eyes grow misty as he looks up and meets her gaze.
He nods, “I know… It’s a miracle.”
“It’s such a miracle, Phillip…” She reaches over to the table and picks up the ultra sound photo, “Here… our baby’s first photo!” She smiles happily as he takes the photo from her, smiling at the bean like figure, with what looks like the start of arms and legs.
Phillip smiles, meeting her eyes, “Beautiful, just like mommy…”
“You knew…” She smiles, “When I told you about the dream that I had… you knew about the baby already?”
He nodded, “Yeah… I did.”
“I’m so excited.” She smiles brightly as he hands her back the photo, she gazes at it, “I can’t wait for us to tell Parker!” She looks up at Phillip, “Do you think he will be excited to have a baby brother or sister?”
Phillip’s face falls for a moment before he tries to hide the shock from her statement. Parker? She remembered Parker… He was starting to think this was going to be more confusing for him than it was for Melanie. He couldn’t keep up with what she knew and what she didn’t.
“Phillip?”
He looks up with a quick smile, pulled from his thoughts, “Yeah… Yes. He will be very excited. But um… I think we should wait a while before we tell him, you know? He’s so young, he won’t understand.”
“You’re right,” She nods, “I’m just so anxious.”
Phillip smiles, “I know.” He pauses, “You just need to get strong so you are healthy enough to come home. Parker misses you, he was asking about you today.”
“He was?” her face was filled with adoration, “I miss him…”
“He’s on a little play-date with Bo and Ciara…they went to the park.”
She smiles, “How cute!” She leans her head back on the pillow, turning to address Phillip, “I can’t wait to be out of here and get back to normal, you know?”
“I can imagine,” Phillip nods, with a smile.
Her eyes grow wide, “Maybe we can take a vacation or something?” She smiles, “Just me and you. A nice little trip before our new baby is born. I’m sure your dad and my grandma wouldn’t mind taking care of Parker for a little while, you know? They would probably love it!”
Phillip nods, “Yeah… they probably would.”
“Wouldn’t you like to go on a vacation? We could go to Greece or the Caribbean… Some place romantic…” Her eyes were practically sparkling with delight. She focuses back on Phillip, “But I guess right now I should focus on what I need to do to get out of this hospital bed, first…”
He chuckles, “Probably a good idea. Once you are back on your feet and in the swing of things, we can plan our little trip.”
“Okay,” She nods, “I just can’t wait to be home… I’ll be able to get much more rest when I am in our bed snuggled next to you.” She tilts her head and smiles adoringly to him.
He looks down momentarily, then back up at her, a small smile curving his lips, “I can’t wait for you to come home, either, Melanie.”
