Chapter 14—Part TwoThe doorbell rang at the Kiriakis mansion and Henderson hurriedly opened the door to find Chad standing on the other side, with the assistance of his crutches “Oh, Mr. DiMera…”
“Please, Henderson… Please call me Chad.” He was visibly repulsed by being referred to as “Mr. Dimera”
Henderson nodded, “Certainly, sir. How are you doing?” He stepped aside to let Chad enter and closed the door.
Chad nodded, “I’m doing better, thank you. Is, um, Mr. Kiriakis available?”
“He is…” He nods as he shows him into the living room where Victor is sitting by the fireplace reading the newspaper.
“Mr. Kiriakis, Sir, Chad DiMera to see you.” Henderson announces before leaving the room.
Victor looked up and rose from his seat, “Chad,” He meets him in a hand shake, “It’s good to see you out and about.”
Chad nods, “Thank you.”
He gestures to the sofa, “Please, have a seat.” He sits down in the chair as Chad takes a seat on the sofa, setting his crutches beside him, “What brings you by, Chad?”
“Well, I was hoping you would help me with something.”
Victor raises an eyebrow, “Help you?”
“Yeah…” Chad looks up, taking a deep breath, “You see, after the accident, when Melanie was in a coma, I made a promise to her that I would do whatever I needed to do to keep her and our baby safe.”
“Okay…”
“I intend to keep that promise, but I can’t do it alone. I don’t know how. I need an experts help and opinion.”
“Expert help and opinion? For what?”
Chad looked up, his face firm, “I need you to help me keep my father away from Melanie and our child.”
Victor took a deep breath, lowering his eyebrows, “Chad…”
“My father can never have the chance to endanger the lives of the people I love ever again.”
“But you know it never was meant for you or Melanie to be put in harms way…”
“Really?” Chad scoffed, “If it weren’t for his enemies and the disgusting business that he is in, Melanie and I would have never been a target for this attack. My innocent girlfriend wouldn’t be recovering from a brain injury, having no idea that I even exist. None of this would have happened if it weren’t for my father and I will be damned if I ever let it happen again.”
“And you think you’re going to fight fire with fire? How does that make you any better than Stefano?” Victor spoke as if he was reciting a line from his wife’s book. In essence, he was grasping at straws because Chad had yet to say anything that he didn’t agree with.
“I don’t care. If protecting Melanie and our baby makes me as bad as my father, then I will be as bad as my father… as long as they are safe.” He speaks matter-of-factually, “I know you feel the same way. I know you will do anything to keep your family safe, that’s why I need you. You know what to do…” Chad was basically pleading.
Victor sighed, “What do you need me to do, exactly?”
“Whatever you can. I need you to pull out whatever stops you have against my father.”
“It’s just not a good idea to go against him. This isn’t a black and white issue… We don’t know all of the facts and we may never.”
“I just want to stop him.”
Victor takes a deep breath, “I can maybe make some calls…get some information, but I’m not going to promise you anything.” He pauses, his voice rises in warning, “This is very dangerous, Chad. Your father has made some lethal enemies, as you know. It’s not a good idea to get too involved.”
Chad nods, “I know. I don’t want to get involved. I don’t want any part of the business… I just want to put a stop to this… I want to put a stop to my father’s reign of terror.”
“You do realize that’s impossible, right? You will never be able to do that.”
Chad shakes his head as he stands, “Well, I need to keep Melanie safe. That’s all I’m worried about.” he picks up his crutches placing them beneath his arms
“I want that too… you know that.” Victor rises from his seat, “I will do what I can.”
Chad nods and reaches out a hand, shaking Victor’s, “Thank you, Mr. Kiriakis.”
Victor nods as Chad turns and walks out. He takes a deep breath before walking toward the fireplace, pulling out his cell phone he makes a call.
Phillip rounds the corner, and spots Victor by the fireplace with one hand in his pocket and one holding the phone to his ear.
“I don’t care what you have to do… I just need you to look into it and let me know what you find. Just keep it quiet, I don’t need anyone finding out that I am involved in this. I understand that, but it’s necessary this time. Yes. Keep me updated.” He hung up his phone and turned, to find Phillip standing behind him, “Phillip.”
Phillip raised an eyebrow, “What are you doing, dad?”
“Just a business call.” He shrugged and crossed his arms.
His son was not amused, “What kind of business?”
“None of yours, that’s what kind.” He snapped, “What the matter?”
Phillip sighed, “Nothing, I’m just heading out to see Melanie.”
“Maggie said she is doing much better… improving quickly.”
He nodded, “Yeah. She’s doing great. They told her about the baby this morning. I hope I can pull this off without her sensing anything…”
Victor raised an eyebrow, “I know this is going to be hard on you, son.”
Phillip nodded, “It is… But I can’t imagine being in Chad’s shoes right now. Hopefully her memory will return soon, for his sake.”
Victor nodded in agreement as Phillip studied him closely; he looked up confused, “What?”
“You tell me.” Phillip shrugged.
“Tell you what, Phillip? I don’t play games.”
His son looks him in the eye, “Whatever it is that you are planning, just keep in mind that you are married... and your wife isn't too keen on certain 'business' dealings.”
“My business is just that, my business.” Victor rolls his eyes, “I don’t answer to my wife.”
“Whatever you say...” Phillip rolled his eyes, before turning and walking away.
Victor shook his head as he watched, his face taking on a worried expression.
