Chapter 26
PHILIP & MELANIE'S APARTMENT
Philip was holding Melanie. Melanie was crying. Both Ceri and Rhiannon were sitting on the couch. They had somber faces.
MELANIE: I just can't believe that she's gone.
Nicholas walked down the stairs. He, too, looked upset.
NICHOLAS: I've, um, spoken with Quinn. We're going to be flying out there to meet him tomorrow.
PHILIP: I called up Brady. Told him I was going out of the country for a few days and was not to be called unless it was an extreme emergency.
NICHOLAS: All right. Thank you, Philip. I know you and I don't get along and that you didn't like her very much, but this means a lot.
PHILIP: Well, she was Mel's mother, too.
Nicholas sat down on the couch between his two daughters. He put his arms around them and kissed them both on the forehead.
NICHOLAS: I think you two should go up to bed. Our flight's early tomorrow. Plus, we've got a long, hard few days ahead of us.
RHIANNON: Okay. Night, daddy.
Rhiannon kissed Nicholas on the cheek and went upstairs.
CERI: Good night, dad.
Ceri kissed Nicholas on the other cheek and followed her sister.
PHILIP: Have you heard from anyone else?
NICHOLAS: Well, Bo, Hope and Jennifer will all be coming. Daniel's gonna see if he can make it, also. I called Aunt Vivian and she said she'd be, and I'm not making this up, I'm using her own words, she said she'd be “more than delighted to come”.
MELANIE: Witch.
PHILIP: Well, I see that dear old Vivian is still the same.
NICHOLAS: Yes, unfortunately. Time hasn't changed her one bit.
PHILIP: Well, remind me to sit on the opposite side of the room from her at the funeral.
HALLWAY
Rhiannon sat in the hallway outside of her bedroom. She got out her cell phone and dialed a number.
J.J. (VO, over phone): Hello?
RHIANNON: Hey. Are you sleeping or can we talk for a minute?
J.J. (VO, over phone): No, we can talk. What's up?
RHIANNON: Ceri, my dad, Philip, Aunt Mel, and I are going outta town for a few days. I don't know when I'll be back.
J.J. (VO, over phone): Oh? Where're you all going?
RHIANNON: Switzerland. My, um...my Grandma Carly died a few days ago. That's why I was so upset the other day.
J.J. (VO, over phone): Oh, I'm sorry. I never really knew her, but my Mom and her used to be really close. Is there anything I can do for you?
RHIANNON: No thanks. We're leaving tomorrow. I just wanted to call and tell you that I won't be around for a week or two.
J.J. (VO, over phone): Okay. Well, if you need anything, I'm here. Just, call me up and I'll be right over.
RHIANNON: Thanks. You're sweet. I'll miss you.
J.J. (VO, over phone): I'll miss you, too.
RHIANNON: Well, I should probably go to bed. I'll call you in a couple days.
J.J. (VO, over phone): All right. I'll be here when you need me.
RHIANNON: Thanks. Bye.
