CARRIE: Emily? Are you serious?
RAFE: Listen, I’ll be back to the office in five minutes. (Hangs up)
SAMI: (Sits back down at table) So, should we get dessert?
RAFE: I…I can’t. I have to get back to the office.
SAMI: So soon?
RAFE: (Gets up) I’m sorry honey. I’ll call you later.
SAMI: Um…ok. Bye.

Rafe drives like a maniac back to the office.

CARRIE: What is this about? What is going on?
RAFE: (Rushes around the office gathering papers) Gary was my old partner. He knew Emily’s case inside and out. When I left the agency, he promised that if he ever found anything he would meet me at Wrigley Field.
CARRIE: Why Wrigley?
RAFE: (Stops and looks at her) Because it’s only the greatest place on Earth. (Continues gathering papers)
CARRIE: Obviously, duh. Ok, so I guess I’ll stay here and hold down the fort.
RAFE: No. I need you to come with me.
CARRIE: Why would you need me?
RAFE: (Searching for a reason) Um…you know. If need legal advice or something.
CARRIE: Hey, you know I’ll help however I can.
RAFE: (Stops and smiles at her) I know.
CARRIE: What about Sami?
RAFE: I’ll handle her. But, I don’t want to wait till morning. We’d better leave tonight.
CARRIE: I’ll call ahead and get hotel rooms.

Rafe goes home to tell Sami the news.

SAMI: Home so soon? I just left you at the restaurant.
RAFE: I wish I were coming home for a happy reason.
SAMI: You wish?
RAFE: I got a call about a case and I have to leave right away.
SAMI: Right away? What’s this case about?
RAFE: A missing woman in Chicago. An old FBI buddy of mine called. He needs my expertise.
SAMI: Chicago? I love Chicago! I’ll get Grandma Caroline to watch the kids and….
RAFE: (Too quickly) NO! (Catches himself) I mean, I’m sorry, but you can’t come.
SAMI: Can’t come? Why not?
RAFE: Privacy issues. You understand.
SAMI: Sure. FBI stuff, right?
RAFE: Right. Of course.
SAMI: Well, if you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.
RAFE: I’ll be back in about two days.
SAMI: (Sadly) Ok. Guess I’ll see you then.

I just love that Rafe is lying to Sami. Is that crazy? It's about time he had some secrets.

LOL at his comment that Wrigley is the best place on earth. And I'm excited that Rafe made up an excuse for Carrie to come to Chicago with him. So what it's a flimsy excuse. She didn't seem at all opposed to the idea.

Can someone refresh my memory..............were Emily & Rafe actually married, or were they about to get married?

If they got married, then that means that Rafe's marriage to Sami was never valid.

This is from the first story:

RAFE: ....I met a wonderful girl in high school named Emily and we were together all through college. She was great. We both wanted a huge family and we never fought. Ever. After we graduated from UCLA, we moved to Chicago to start our lives together. (looks out the window at a distant memory) I got a job with the local police department and she went to work as an elementary school teacher. We were engaged two months after we got there and she got pregnant shortly after that. I was in heaven. And then, I was in hell. She left one morning to go shopping for the baby and she never came back.

ON THE TRAIN TO CHICAGO

CARRIE: So you didn’t tell her I was going too?
RAFE: Why? It would’ve only started a fight, and I didn’t want to have to deal with that.
CARRIE: Rafe! You can’t lie to Sami. Especially when I’m involved!
RAFE: (Shrugs) I didn’t exactly lie. I just said she couldn’t come with me.
CARRIE: (Slaps him on the shoulder) See! THIS is why men are stupid.
RAFE: (Laughing) What?
CARRIE: Oh man, this is gonna be so bad.
RAFE: She never has to know.
CARRIE: Won’t she figure it out if she tries to come see me and I’m out of town?
RAFE: What’s the likelihood of that happening?
CARRIE: Well, now that I say it out loud, slim to none. Still. (Slaps him again) Do NOT lie to your wife. Especially when your wife is Sami.
RAFE: Yes, ma’am.
CARRIE: I mean it!
RAFE: (Winks) You got it. Look, we’re pulling into Chicago. We’ll get to the hotel and maybe grab a bite to eat?
CARRIE: Sure. That sounds fine.

As they exit the train, they spot Philip and Chloe and baby Parker waiting down the platform.

CARRIE: Is that Philip? And Chloe?
RAFE: Looks like it. (Calls out to them) Philip! Chloe!
PHILIP: Honey, look. It’s Rafe. (Waves at them)
CHLOE: And is that Carrie? What are they doing together?
PHILIP: What’s up guys? What are you doing in Chicago?
RAFE: We have a case up here.
CHLOE: A case?
CARRIE: We’re private investigators now.
PHILIP: Wow, congrats! I wish we could stay and chat some more, but we are actually on our way to Salem.
CHLOE: (Looks lovingly at Philip) We have some news to share with Kate.
RAFE: Oh, well, you guys have fun.

Philip, Chloe, and Parker board the train. Rafe and Carrie wave goodbye as the train departs.

CARRIE: They look so happy.
RAFE: Don’t they? Almost makes you jealous, doesn’t it?
CARRIE: (Sighs) It really does.
RAFE: (Sensing the change in her mood) Hey, now. Let’s get to this fabulous hotel you booked.

HOTEL FRONT DESK

CARRIE: What do you mean, you only have one room available?
DESK CLERK: I’m terribly sorry, ma’am. But the Cardinals are in town and we book up completely for those games.
CARRIE: Who are the Cardinals?
RAFE: (Stepping in) You’ll have to excuse my…wife. She’s not big into baseball.
DESK CLERK: (Smiling) Of course. The best I can do is a suite on the 14th floor. Will that do?
RAFE: Yes, that will be perfect.
CARRIE: (Quietly to Rafe) It will NOT be perfect. We can’t share a bed.
RAFE: We probably won’t have to. If it’s a suite, I’m pretty sure there will be a sofa bed.
CARRIE: And if not?
RAFE: (Winks) Then we’ll make do.
