SOD: Sami and EJ Have Sex!As the action-packed week begins, parents Sami and EJ are in a panic over Johnny’s disappearance. While Roman, Bo and Hope launch a massive search to find the boy, an anguished Sami holds John responsible for putting her son’s life in danger. “It’s horrible for John and Marlena,” points out Co-Head Writer Darrell Ray Thomas, Jr. “Think about the guilt that John is carrying. Everyone was gathered at the Brady Pub to see him. He has been afraid of putting his family in danger, and then this happens. Meanwhile, Marlena was happy to see Sami there. She thought it was the right thing. Everybody is affected. This is a child who is tied to so many people in Salem, so many prominent families.” EJ is also beating himself up over what has happened. “Everything that EJ set in motion caused this,” notes the scribe. "So EJ is taking it all on his shoulders.”
Meanwhile, Sami keeps her distance from Rafe, who does his best to console her. “Rafe advocated for Sami to see John and try to resolve the situation between them,” notes Galen Gering. “Ultimately, it led to the disappearance of Johnny, so Rafe has guilt for encouraging Sami to see John.”
And Sami has a hard time ignoring her husband’s role in the turn of events. “There’s this real anger toward Rafe for making her go against her better judgment,” says Alison Sweeney. “In her darkest hour and in this pain and at that point where she thinks she will never see her son again, she’s trying not to say to Rafe, 'It’s your fault.' She tries so hard not to say it to him that she can’t say anything. She can’t let him hold her. She has this rage building and finally, she unleashes it when he confronts her about it, and it’s this great scene that Galen and I worked really hard to make come to life. She finally can’t take it anymore and she has a real deep, cutting, horrible argument with him.”
Bo and Roman learn that the state police are in pursuit of the gunman who fired at John. An enterprising Rafe hears the same thing. With Rafe’s help, the Salem PD apprehend the would-be assassin. Sami and EJ race over and confront the man, demanding to know their son’s whereabouts. The shooter, who is a disgruntled police officer, claims to know nothing about Johnny; he was outraged at John for stealing his pension.
Soon after, Roman receives word that a young boy resembling Johnny was spotted on a country road near a cabin. While Roman follows up on the lead, Sami’s family and friends gather around her to lend emotional support. John and Marlena show up and Sami is unable to control her emotions. She vows to blame them for the rest of of her life if Johnny isn’t returned to her. Roman arrives with EJ and Rafe to share the heart-stopping news: a fragment of a bloody shirt has been found. “She just falls apart,” says Sweeney. “She’s trying to have hope, but that hope slowly gets crushed out of her every time they don’t find him. She has lost a child; those feelings about her kids are very close to the surface. So when they find a body that is similar to Johnny’s and they find bloody clothes in the river, I just think that it’s really hard for her to keep it together. She is numb at one point and out of it, and at another, she’s totally hysterical.”
The next day, Bo and Hope visit Sami with harrowing news: a boy’s body has been found. Sami breaks down, fearing that it’s Johnny. EJ also receives the horrifying report. While Rafe accompanies Bo and Hope to the crime scene, Sami goes to see EJ and waits it out with him. “She is in the depths of despair, and EJ has that rage and anger in him,” observes Sweeney. “They feed off of each other in an incredibly dark way, really maybe hurting each other and hurting themselves.”
When Sami and EJ hear an emotional news report that Johnny is dead, they turn to each other and wind up having sex. “Sometimes, when you’re on a track as an actor, the hardest thing to fight through is the transition,” Sweeney explains. “For me, this was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire career, to take these feelings of loss and try to translate them into a sex scene. Without question, it was a really difficult thing for me to handle and I think partially because I have kids and I couldn’t let go of the reality of how I would feel in those circumstances. But it is built up to a point where they think the child is dead. They go at each other and get so angry and in that heightened state of rage – and it does become physical, where they are pushing and shoving each other and yelling – there’s not a lot of rational thought taking place. One physical outlet turns into a different physical outlet, ultimately. The directors and the producer were saying, 'You have to stop the pain. If you don’t stop the pain, you’ll die. The only thing you can hold on to is this moment and try not to feel the pain.' She isn’t thinking, she is trying not to feel. But I think if you’re an EJami fan, there’s some meat there to embrace, that it does happen with EJ.”
Adds Co-Head Writer Marlene McPherson, “They share the grief. They’re the only two people in the world who are going to feel what is happening the same way. They’re the only two people who can comfort each other. This comes out of the moment. Everything is building up in them and it just explodes. It wasn’t anything that they planned. It isn’t romantic.”
At that moment, Will arrives and sees the two together. “Sami has done exactly the same thing her mother did, and now her son is seeing it, just like she saw Marlena and John together years ago,” Thomas teases, “This is going to take off in story for everyone in Salem.”
“This is the full-circle evolution of Sami,” states McPherson. “When Sami walked into that conference room 18 years ago and saw John and Marlena having sex on the conference room table, it changed her life forever. Now, she has repeated that same exact act….”
Ex Sex ShockerAlison Sweeney admists she was stunned when she fist heard about the Sami/EJ romp. “Literally, my first reaction was the classic soap gasp and picking my jaw up off the floor moment. I was shocked. I imagine my reaction will be similar to the one the fans will have when they see it. I would never have written that, I would never have predicted that. I would never have gone down that road.”
She is curious to find out what the viewers think. “I am definitely nervous. I am definitely excited, just as someone who gets to tell the story. I think it will generate a very strong reaction, and whether you love it or hate it, it is captivating in that you will want to see what happens next, no matter whose side you’re on.”
Like Mother, Like SonAfter Sami discovered Marlena and John having sex in a Titan conference room in 1993, the incident was so traumatic that she developed an eating disorder. Later Sami began acting out and wreaked havoc in the lives of everyone around her. What’s ahead for Will, now that he has caught his mom and EJ? “Will is going to become Sami at that age,” teases Marlene McPherson. "We’re going to see a whole different Will. We watched how Sami changed after she saw John and Marlena. Now, Will is Sami. There are things ahead that the audience won’t even see coming.” One thing is certain: Will is coming out and will reveal that he is gay. McPherson says, “We’ve been watching the scenes that are taping, and I am telling you, get ready! When you see the stuff that is going to happen, it’s unbelievable!”

SOW: Sami and EJ Get Physical!Believing that Johnny is dead, Sami and EJ fall into each other’s arms and end up having sex.
The week begins with the Salem PD searching for Johnny. EJ doesn’t trust the police force and threatens to bring in his own people to find his son. “Everything that has happened with John, EJ set in motion,” points out Co-Head Writer Darrell Ray Thomas Jr. “So EJ is taking this all on his shoulders.”
Meanwhile, Rafe is relegated to the sidelines because he’s no longer with law enforcement. “To a certain degree, the Salem Police Department is intentionally keeping Rafe out of the loop,” shares Galen Gering (Rafe). “Rafe is also getting minimal cooperation from his contacts at the FBI, so he’s up against it.”
Word leaks that Bo and Roman have caught the gunman who took aim at John, and a distraught Sami and EJ race to confront him. They demand to know where Johnny is being held, but the gunman, who is a police officer, swears he had nothing to do with their son’s disappearance. He was simply angry at John for stealing his pension.
Later, Roman is informed that a young boy fitting Johnny’s description was seen on a country road near a cabin. Sami and EJ cling to the hope that Johnny is about to be rescued. Meanwhile, Sami’s friends and family rally around her. Sami welcomes the support, until John and Marlena arrive. She blames John for Johnny’s disappearance and promises that she will never forgive him or Marlena if her son is harmed. “It’s horrible for John and Marlena,” asserts Thomas.
Roman updates Sami and EJ on the investigation and reveals that piece of bloody clothing has been found. Sami fears the worst. When Rafe tries to comfort her, she pushes him away. “Rafe advocated and pushed for Sami to see John,” explains Gering. “He wanted her to try and resolve the situation and ultimately it led to the disappearance of Johnny. Based on everything that has happened to Sami and Rafe over the last couple of years, it’s a lot of stress. It can have a cumulative affect. This is definitely pushing their relationship to a point it hasn’t been in for awhile.”
Bo and Hope visit Sami and brace her for terrifying news: The body of a young boy has been found. Rafe accompanies Bo and Hope to the crime scene. Rafe looks at the body and can tell right away that it isn’t Johnny. Rafe tries to phone Sami, but her cell service is temporarily down.
Sami has a hard time coping with fears and visits EJ at the DiMera mansion. “When two people have a child, there is a connection for life,” states Thomas. Co-Head Writer Marlene McPherson adds, “Sami and EJ share the grief. They’re the only two people in the world who are going to feel this in the same way. They’re the only two people who can comfort each other.”
An erroneous report is broadcast that the body found is Johnny’s. Sami and EJ hear the news and are crushed. Their grief leads to them having sex. “This comes out of the moment,” says McPherson. “It’s like it has been building up inside of them. This wasn’t anything that they planned. This isn’t a romantic thing.” Sami and EJ are so caught up in the moment that they don’t realize Will has arrived at the DiMera mansion and sees them together.
McPherson teases, “What is this going to do to Will?”
