Chapter 60


" Steve cleared his throat , " Well Jackson..you know I am not one for speeches ,We have

missed so many years..spent many hating each other, then lost years just as things were

changing for us. I am very happy that we have each other now. I guess I just want to say

that..I am proud of you , proud of what you have made of yourself ..proud of the man you

have become.. You are a good man..a good father..a good brother and a good son. That's

why I know you are going to be a good husband. I know you and Sara will be very happy

together. From what I have seen , the two of you make a great team. Sara ..I know you will

love my baby brother and take care of him and for that I am grateful and I welcome you

into the family. So to a long life together filled with love and happiness ...to Jack and Sara.

" Everyone held their glasses high " To Jack and Sara ! " they all repeated.



"Dean came forward. " I know that I am not the best man but I just wanted to say for both

me and Angie..We are so happy to have you back Jackie. Sara..you have been like a sister to

me and Angel both. We love you and are so thrilled to see both you and Jack this happy. As

I told my wife recently , It's nice to have our family back together. Family is everything..but

i know that is something you both know all too well. So...To family ! "



They danced and ate and went through all the wedding " rituals" as Jack called them. Sara

danced with her son then with JJ and Jack danced with Jo. Steve walked over to him just

before he went on the dance floor and handed him a napkin, " Here you will need this for

the waterworks." JJ had fallen asleep and Robert laid him on a on a row of chairs against

the wall so he could fall off. Jack watched as Sara covered him with a tablecloth she got

from a waitress. Abigail danced with her father and brother. Robert took Katie to the floor

to dance as well, " I have to say..I love your family. They are fun and crazy. " Robert agreed.

" I don't think I have ever seen two people so much in love. " she told him, " Yeah...that

they are, it took them long enough to get here." Robert told her. Then Sara tossed the

bouquet. Jack knew that meant he had to remove the garter. " Sorry gentleman, you will not

be getting to see my lovely wife's beautiful legs." Jack slid his hand under Sara's dress,

gliding his fingers over her skin, his eyes never leaving her's. When he reached his

destination he gave her thigh a light squeeze and he winked at her. He slid his hand

slowly back down with the garter in tow. His touch sent chills down Sara's back. Then

came the cutting of the cake. Dean was ready with his camera, they cut a slice together and

then they each took a forkful and fed it to each other. Then Jack took a finger full of icing

he ate half and smeared the rest on Sara's nose, but she was ready for him and smeared

icing on his cheek. Dean was laughing and snapping pictures. Jack and Sara exchanged

glances and she flung icing onto Dean's head. Jack saw his target to the left of him and hit

Angela in the face with the icing too. " That is for losing my bride." He said with a laugh.

As the night drew to a close , Jack and Sara said their goodbyes. He held her hand and

helped her into the Rolls. He wrapped his arms around her, kissing her for a long time. " I

love you so very much Mrs Deveraux , " he whispered into her ear. " I love you more Mr

Deveraux." she whispered back. " I have a night of romance planned for us this evening.."

Jack said as he rubbed his finger over her chin. Then to the driver, " To the Waldorf.."



When the reached the door to the bridal suite Jack lifted Sara into his arms and carried

her over the threshold. The room was beautiful and in the living room area was a fireplace

already on, Sara's favorite, white Roses filled the room. There was champagne and some

food as well. " This is beautiful Jack. " Jack agreed , " It is..our overnight bags were

brought here already . " Sara turned and wrapped her arms around Jack's neck, " Thank you

so much for making today perfect. " she said as she kissed him. " Jack caressed her cheek,

" It's only just begun for us Sara.." She pulled back and smiled at him, " I am going to go

change.." Jack held her hands a moment longer, " I will be here.." While Sara went to get

changed , Jack laid out a thick comforter on the floor by the fire , he brought over the

champagne and a small box..his gift for her. He took off his jacket , tie and vest. Then he

kicked off his shoes and sat in front of the fire waiting. jack took a pillow and put it

behind his head and leaned back against the couch , eyes closed . The events of the day

played in his mind like a movie. Sara stood in the room and watched him for a few minutes

as a smile danced on his lips. He was so handsome she thought. Then she spoke on a

whisper.." We could just go to sleep if you are tired." His eyes popped open, " No..no I was

just ..." he stopped talking and sighed at the sight of her, she stood before him in a

flowing silk and lace white gown. She held a box and an envelope in her hand. " You are

even more beautiful now then you were when we were young. " Jack raised himself to his

knees and wrapped his arms around her waist , pulling her close and kissing her. " I have

something for you," He told her , his lips still touching hers. " I have something for you

too." she replied. Jack leaned down and handed her a small box. Sara opened the box and

found a simple gold cross inside with a diamond in it's center. Sara covered her mouth

with her hand , " Oh Jack..." Jack looked nervous, " I know it's not your Mother's actual

cross..but I had Dean enlarge a photo of it and I brought it to a jeweler.." Sara had worn

her mother's cross from the day she had died. Jack had always seen it, he knew the story of

why she wore it. One day while they were eating dinner at the hotel in Salem jack had

noticed that she was not wearing it. Sara told him she had lost it while on assignment in

the Middle East. " Oh Jack..it's..it's the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. I will

wear it always.. " Jack removed it from it's box and placed it around her neck, kissing her

neck after he was done. Sara held it lovingly in her hand as you turned around. " My

turn..open the box first." As Jack opened the box , Sara bit her lip, " I know you have a lot

of these but.." It watch..a Rolex.." Sara ..this is beautiful.." It was gold with a diamond oat

the 12,3,6 and 9. ' It's engraved. " For all time..Past ..apart..and now forever..always Sara"

Jack sighed, " Now the envelope.." Jack opened the envelope and found a birth certificate in

it. He looked at her with a puzzled expression. " I corrected a wrong , with our son's help."

It was Robert's birth certificate reissued to include Jack's name as father. Robert had given

Sara copies of the documents that have officially changed his name to Deveraux. "

Sara..thank you..this means so much to me" She wrapped her arms around him and they

kissed, slow and filled with love. Jack's hands slid slowly up her body to her shoulders,

then cupped her face. Then Sara unbuttoned his shirt and slid it from his strong shoulders.

She smiled at the sight of him, " You are so handsome Jack..my heart skips a beat every

time I look at you..even when I am angry at you. " That made him smiled too. He slip the

straps of her night gown down and watched as the gown slid off her. He kissed her

everywhere . The scent of her and the softness of her skin assaulted his senses. he wanted

to take her now..but he also wanted to take his time..he wanted this time to last as long as

the could. Sara felt his desire..and his restraint. She knew what he wanted and she felt the

same. He took her in his arms and swung her around and lowered her slowly down to the

floor. They laid there for a long time just kissing and letting their hands roam freely. Then

when each needed more Jack rolled Sara onto her back and he covered her body with his.

Sara wrapped her arms and legs around him as he made himself one with her. He held

himself there, then propping himself up on his elbows and took her face in his hands

looking into her eyes. His eyes glistened in the light of the fire , "What is it ?" she

whispered to him. He let out a shuddering sigh,"I have never felt so happy..so complete in

all of my life." Sara placed her hand on the side of his face then caressed the back of his

neck and played with his hair, " The best is yet to come.. I love you more then anything

Jack..and I will never stop loving you..I could never stop. You are a part of me..you are in

my soul." Jack came down on top of her and whispered in her ear, " I am never going to let

you go again..never..I love you with all of my heart." Then he kissed her neck and then he

kissed her mouth and he started moving slowly at first, then with more purpose. He forgot

about slow..she was in his arms he was one with her..she belonged to him ..completely.

Sara felt it too. They belonged to each other. Robert had belonged to her..her only true tie

in the world..now she had Jack..he husband. Just saying that word filled her with a joy she

could have never imagined. Now each wanting more Jack moved faster and harder and Sara

met each of his passion filled movements with ones of her own. Her hands filled with his

hair as she pulled him down onto her, faster and harder each calling out the others name.

The final release was an explosion of love and total contentment. They lay holding to each

other breathing heavily. " I would have to say that our first time as husband and wife was

remarkable. " he said , panting. Sara could hardly breath , " Agreed.." was all she could

manage. Then they held each other until their breathing returned and their hearts stilled,

then they made love again.



The next morning after coffee in bed the dressed and went to meet the family at a

restaurant for brunch. " Jackson ! I wasn't sure you two were going to make it , judging by

the stories Dean here has been telling. " Dean shrugged as Jack glared at him. " So how are

the newlyweds today? " Dean asked. Sara flashed a bright smile , "Tired..VERY tired." Jack

cleared his throat , " Please..my mother is here." They sat down and everyone ate and

talked. The time was wonderful. As the got ready to head back to the penthouse Sara

stopped , " Oh Damn..I left mt cell on the table be back in a sec.." The family walked across

the street and most got into cabs and headed back, Only Jack, Steve and Robert remained."

so when are you leaving for your honeymoon?" Robert asked. Jack and Steve exchanged

quick glances. " I am not sure yet.." Sara came out of the restaurant and was waiting to

cross the street when the tires screeched and came to a stop in front of her. Steve and Jack

turned their heads and ran towards her, Robert close behind. Three men jumped out of a

van faces obscured and grabbed her, dragging her toward the van. Sara screamed and

kicked one in the groin and elbowed the other. Then the guys were there, Steve punched

one and Robert the other, Jack raced for her and pulled her away from the third man. The

three men fought back and then they jumped back in the van and took off. "

Sara..sweetheart are you alright? " Jack said as he checked her for injuries. She nodded, "

Yes..I am fine..what the hell is this all about? " Jack helped her up, " I don't know but I think a visit to Agent Todd is in order."

chapter 61

" Jack sit down you are making me dizzy." Sara said as she held her head. " What is it ? Did you bang your head? " Jack sat next to her and started to look her over. Sara slapped his hand away, " NO! Your making me crazy, you have to calm down." The bell rang and Steve answered the door. He came back in with Ben. He went straight towards Sara, " Are you alright? " Sara nodded " What the hell is going on here Ben..I mean we didn't find out much..who did we scare?" Ben shook his head, " I don't know. I have a forensic account going over the dummy company that sends Mrs Barone the checks, we know he was smuggling in opium, I guess his boss is worried we are going to find something." Jack jumped in, " Where was the protection you said you were going to set up for her." Sara jumped up, " The WHAT ? You spoke to Ben ? The two of you decided this without my opinion..and when were you going to tell me about it ? " she yelled the fire flashing in her eyes. " Jack looked at Ben then to Sara , " I was going to tell you but I didn't really see you after you got back and then with the wedding.." Sara shook her head , " Well you can forget it..I am not going to have some agent following me around. We are suppose to be going on our honeymoon." Ben smirked , " Yeah about that..not a good idea. I think you need to postpone it. " Jack and Sara both looked at him, " I just bet you do" Jack muttered. Steve joined in the conversation , " He may be right Jack. If they are watching her snatching her in a foreign country might just make it easier." Jack and Sara spoke to each other with their eyes. Sara sighed and nodded, " Fine but I don't want some agent hanging around.." Ben cleared his throat , " Well I could.." Both Jack and Sara spoke, " NO! " Ben stepped back hands raised, " Hey , it was just a suggestion. " Jack stood glaring at him when Steve cleared his throat. " I could do it..look after Shortstuff. I am family so I won't be too conspicuous ." Jack and Sara exchanged glances, then Jack spoke, " I couldn't ask you to do that." Steve smirked , " You didn't..I volunteered. What do you say Shortstuff ? You be ok with that..you got have some protection , baby brother here will go out of his mind if you don't." Sara smiled at him, then she looked at Jack, " I am ok with that..Jack what do you think?" Jack thought about a moment, then he turned to Steve , " If you're sure..then yes.. There is no one in this world that I would trust with the safety of my wife . " Sara smiled at the use of that term and Ben cringed at it. " Ok..it's settled..I am going to go downstairs and talk to Kayla.." Sara touched his arm as he was leaving, " Thanks Steve.." He smirked " That's what family is for," he said as he looked at Jack. Ben stood staring at Sara as she and Jack spoke , " I guess I had better get back to work , since the honeymoon is on hold." Jack took her by the shoulders, " As soon as you are safe I will take you anywhere in the world you wish to go." he kissed her forehead . "Italy...I want to go to Italy." Jack looked down on her, he had to keep her safe...at any price. " Italy it is..Thank you for doing this for me." Sara looked up at him, " Don't kid yourself Jack, I am doing this for me too. I want my life with you..and nobody is going to take it away from me." Then she remembered that Ben was still there. She turned and faced him, " You will keep posted as to what you find....and yes I will do the same. " The phone rang and Jack went to answer it. " I saw the pictures on the news, You looked stunning." Ben said with a sad smile. " Thank you..so..has anybody tried to get at you again? " she asked. Ben shook his head , " Not yet..I am going to get going..kick this investigation into high gear. Sara promise me..promise me you will be careful and let Jack and his brother protect you. I know you are his....wife.....but I still love you..I don't want anything happening to you." Sara promised she will and they agreed that Ben will come by in a few days an exchange notes.



Hope sat on the sofa next to Jennifer as she cried. She came over after seeing Jack and Sara's wedding on the news. Of course Jennifer had seen it. She started with Abby's facebook and the pictures she had posted. How beautiful she had looked and JJ was positively adorable. She saw photos of all Jack's family and then she saw him. He was so handsome as always in his tuxedo , smiling with his children..all three. Then Abby and Robert with Jo. Then was the hardest picture .. It was of Jack and Sara dancing. Jennifer cried at the sight of HER Jack dancing with another woman. No not just any woman..but his WIFE. Then she saw them again..on CNN. The anchor was talking and she heard her say " Pulitzer prize winning reporter Sara Jamison married New York Times editor and small town paper owner Jack Deveraux this evening in an intimate ceremony. Mr Deveraux an award winning reporter in his own right and Miss Jamison had met and dated while attending Yale. After college both went their separate ways. After over 25 years apart the two had come together again , both working on the recent Lawrence Alamain story. The two fell in love again and were married not long after. Mr and Mrs Deveraux share a son together , Robert 26 years old a former Marine POW. Mr Deveraux has two other children a daughter Abigail , 20 and another son, Jack Jr 5, from a previous marriage. " A previous marriage ..that's what their life together has been reduced to. She had went all these months thinking she knew what Jack had felt like when she had divorced him..but she knew now she had not. She had believed that he was not really serious about Sara, but she knew better now. She knew it in her heart that day she saw them coming out of the elevator. That was a sight that she would not forget as long as long as she lived. She had lost him..now she would have to find a way to live with the knowledge that she had given him up and he had made a life for himself..with another.



Jack and Sara lay on the couch together. " Are you angry with me ? " he asked as he ran his fingers up and down her arm. " No..I get there was no time to talk to me before the wedding. I know how you get when you worry..but Jack. next time...don't just make decisions FOR me..make them with me. We have both done that too many times and with horrible results. " Jack sighed.." Agreed.. I love you. " Sara smiled, " I love you too.." As they lay there he thought about a night long ago. He often thought of that night. It was the first time in his life that someone gave to him, gave of themselves for him..and sought nothing in return. It was the first time he realized what it meant to love...

chapter 62

As Jack held her in his arms he thought about the first time they had been intimate. He was hurting and she gave him everything he had needed...

Dean and Angie were making plans to go out for the evening and Sara was doing homework when Jack came in . "Hey Jackie..didn't expect to see you until tomorrow." Dean said. "I came back early..what's going on here? " They knew had seen him like this before. He was always like this when he came back from seeing his father, they usually let it wear off itself but this time was different. They told him what their plans were and invited him along. " no..I don't think so. " Dean asked if he was going to the bar to meet his other friends as they had seen them there a short time ago. " My friends? I don't have friends..not real ones anyway, I have people who want things from me..all kinds of things. " Dean was sick of his poor little rich kid attitude." Excuse me? You saying we aren't your friends? That we only want to use you?" Jack smirked, " Don't you? Everyone else does..not sure what the angle you three have. Maybe you think I can use my name or my money to help you all get a leg up in your professions ." Sara was standing there watching him, her mouth open. " You know something Jack you are an ass. We are not your friends because of your money...we are your friends in spite of it." Dean stormed into Angela's room. Angela stopped just shy of her door and turned to face Jack. " You really can be major jerk sometimes Deveraux." Jack turned to see her standing there just staring at him, " Well ? " Sara was not going to play this game with him. She was hurt , and he could see it in her eyes but he refused to acknowledge it. " I think ....I think if you don't want to be here with us you should just go ." Jack was a bit surprised, " Are you asking me to leave ? " Sara blinked a few times , " I..I believe I am yes...Please leave." Jack huffed , " Fine... whatever.." He stormed out the door. He went to several bars and there was no shortage of companionship. Several of the young ladies he met wanted to take him home. He was not in the mood for meaningless unemotional hook ups tonight. He realized where he wanted to be..needed to be. But what if they would not let him back in. He found himself outside the door , he knocked lightly and Sara opened the door. She did not ask him in but stood holding the door half closed. " What do you want ? " she asked without emotion in her voice. " Aren't you going to let me in ? " he asked in a rather small voice. Sara held fast and stayed stern, she felt for him , but she could not allow him to take things out on them..but more then that he needed to learn that he couldn't treat people this way. " No I am not. I repeat..what do you want? " Jack looked down at his shoes , " I wish to talk .." She leaned up against the door frame, "So talk." Jack said he wanted to apologize. Sara told him that sometimes just saying sorry was not enough. He nodded, " I know that.." She flung the door open and walked back inside. He hesitated for a moment then went in . Dean and Angela were just about to leave and as they walked past him , Jack placed his hand on Dean's shoulder. " I am so sorry for what I said to you earlier. " Dean smiled at him and nodded , and Angela put her hand on his chest and Jack placed his over hers. " We are friends Jack..we forgive each other. " He smack Jack on the back and they left. Sara was back at her desk in her room. Jack wondered in and sat on the edge of her bed. She stopped and looked over at him. She wanted him to explain what he said earlier. He told her how he had foolishly thought this time would be different , when his father said he wanted to spend time with him he had meant it. All he wanted was Jack there for a photo op. He was tired of people wanting and expecting things from him. Nobody cared for him they never even took the time to know him. She walked over to him. " I know you..I cared about.." Jack shook his head, " What do you want from me .." Sara brushed his hair from his eyes, " Nothing..I am your friend..that's all. I want to be here for you. " He sighed heavily and she wrapped her arms around him, " Why doesn't love me? He only wants me to be like him. He doesn't even know who I am..he doesn't care." Sara held him tighter, " It's his loss. You are remarkable." She kissed his forehead and he returned that kiss with a feather like kiss on her neck , then another and then another. She could feel the wetness from his eyes and her heart broke for this incredible young man that had everything but only wanted to be loved by his father..or someone. He looked up into her eyes. She kissed him on the mouth , softly. " We care..Dean and Angie....Me..I care. " He pulled her to him and held onto her so tightly Sara could hardly breathe. Then they were on the bed. They kissed and before they knew it their clothes were gone. Sara wanted to show him that she cared . She took her time and caressed him and kissed him with tenderness. All she wanted in that moment was to make him feel loved. Jack felt her kisses and the way She touched him wash over him and take away his pain. He had never felt this way when making love before. This was the way it was suppose to feel . It made him weak and strong , He could not hold her close enough..or kiss her or feel her skin under his fingertips enough. Yes this was not sex..he knew...this was making love.



" What are thinking about ? " she asked sleepily . " I am thinking about the first time we made love and how it made me feel. I was thinking that it still makes me feel the same way." Sara smiled, " I know what you mean..It is always wonderful.." Jack sighed and closed his eyes , " Good night Mrs Deveraux. " " Can you just call me that from now on instead of Sara.."

chapter 63


Sara was up early and despite the events of the previous day she was in a great mood. She was Mrs jack Deveraux nd she had spent the evening making love to her HUSBAND. Sara sighed at the thought. Now she must solve this latest mystery and she and Jack could be on her way to Italy. Sara pounded away at her computer running everything she could think of. She needed more information..she looked at the door then to her phone. He answered on the second ring. " Someone better be beating down your door babe or I am going to be seriously pissed." Sara chuckled, " Stop calling me that..sorry I woke you but I really need some info on those shell companies. I want to get this investigation moving." Ben yawned, "Right you have a honeymoon to go on. " Ben promised to call her back when he woke up and had his coffee. Sara peeked in on Robert, he was sleeping well. Sara made coffee and went back into their bedroom. She placed the tray with the thermal carafe and cups on the desk and climbed back into bed, draping her arm and leg over Jack. His arm came around her and he stroked her hair. " And where did you disappear to Mrs Deveraux ? " Sara snuggled closer to him, " I had to make my husband coffee. He is a bear in the morning without it, plus i wanted to get my notes organized...I have to do some work today if I ever want to get to Italy. Too bad I can't take you instead o my husband. " Jack smirked , " Let's see if I am a bear..then that would make you..... Goldilocks. " Then he turned on his side and slid down a bit , pulling her close and kissing her. " It appears someone is sleeping in my bed...and here she is. " Sara ran her hands through Jack's hair , " Oh Jack... there will be no sleeping involved ."



Robert got up and found coffee already made in the kitchen. He sat at the table and thought about the fact that he would be seeing the therapist today. He thought too of the previous night.... Even though he did not want to, his parents had insisted that he keep his date with Katie. They had a lovely dinner and watched a movie. Robert had made love to her again. He had almost forgotten how much he had liked to have sex. He had laid with her and held her as they talked for an hour or so. both were getting sleepy and he knew he could not stay. As he was dressing Katie had asked when he was going to tell her the real reason that he never slept over. He stood blinking at her. " I can tell that you are afraid to fall asleep here. I am guessing ..night terrors? Robert froze and turned to look at her, " How did you know that? " She gave him a sad smile. " My dad is a soldier remember? He has done a lot of things for returning vets. It's ok you know..you don't have to run out of here..you can stay the night. " Robert walked over to her and leaned over and kissed her softly. " Thank you..I appreciate that...but...I am really not ready to do that. They can get pretty bad and ..I promise when I get it under control ..I will spend the WHOLE night with you. " Katie nodded, " Alright..I just wanted you to know that I understand . " Steve came into the kitchen " Hey morning big dude. Your parents still asleep ? " he asked as he poured himself some coffee. " Yeah..they are. Hey ..thanks Uncle Steve for sticking around to watch over my Mom. I know that you all loved Jennifer .." Steve shook his head, " I didn't really know her all that well. She was what he needed back then tho. She changed him..for the better, but your Momma..well she really brings out the best in him. I have never seen him so at ease. So..you decided yet about what job you are going to take ? " Robert looked down into his mug, " I have..FBI..I am going with the FBI. I haven't told anybody yet.." Steve raised his hand , " Say no more ..I won't say anything. But for what it's worth..I think you will be a great agent." Robbie smiled , " Thanks Uncle Steve."



Ben came by later on in the morning and brought over everything they had on the companies. They were shell companies an they were still working on getting to the real owner. Ben got a call and relayed the information to Sara. The last company came back to " The Veterans Mental Health Fund." Sara looked at the CEO's name. " Jack?..That General that we saw when we were trying to find out about Robbie , was his name.." Jack answered and they both said it together. " General Malcom Donnelly."



Sara was pouring coffee in the kitchen as Ben sat at the table. "So..am I to assume that you wish to to come with me to Washington?" Jack was behind the door and stopped at his question to Sara. He felt a bit guilty so he entered the room, Ben frowned at the sight of him but Sara had her back to them and didn't see him enter. " Actually I think Jack should handle the interview with him, he really knew how to handle him at our last meeting. I felt like..I don't know..maybe the General was somewhat intimidated by Jack. I know I would have been..he was very impressive." Sara turned with mugs in her hand to find Jack standing there with a smile on his face. " You really think so?" Sara smirked at him , " Sneaking up on me? Yes..I do, What do think? " He loved how they would discuss things, it was one of the things he loved best about them . " Well..If you are comfortable not doing it yourself..I would say I agree. I believe I could rattle his cage." Ben cleared his throat , " Well I guess we should book a flight ..I will get on that right now." Sara stared at Jack. " What? " he asked innocently as he sipped his coffee. Sara shook her head, " Don't give me that wide eyed innocent look Jackie. Are you two going to be alright alone or do you need to take a mediator? " Jack chuckled, " Not necessary, besides I have already won the hand of the fair maiden." Sara stroked his hair as he kissed her hand, " Indeed you have sir, a long time ago I might add." Robbie came into the kitchen and cleared his throat, " I don't mean to interrupt but there is something I would like to tell you both." He sat at the table with his parents and told them that he decided on going with the position at the FBI. Both his mother and Father did not looked pleased , but for different reasons he was sure. His mother because of the danger she knew the job could bring and his father..well the danger but also because he would be with Ben. They both gave him his support and then he told them he was going to tell Ben. " Well..how do you really feel about this?" Jack asked Sara. " I am not happy..you? " Jack sighed, " Once again we are in total agreement, but he is a grown man..there is nothing we can do about the choices he makes for his life. We can only be there for him if need be." Sara chuckled, " Since when do you think like that? " Jack pulled her into his arms, " Since I started paying attention to my wife." Sara kissed him, " Oooh..good answer Jackie...good answer." Then Jack rested his head on hers, " Now will she listen to me? Will she do as her brother in-law directs and be careful while I am gone ? " Sara held him tightly. " I in fact know she will. She is even going to have Dean stay here too because Angela left on assignment for a week. She has a ton of research to keep her busy." Jack sighed, " Good..very good. I love you Sara. " Sara looked up into his eyes, " I love you too. Too bad we have a houseful. " Jack looked st her with a questioning expression. She pulled him by his shirt down to her and whispered in his ear, making his eyes open wide. " You are a very naughty girl..maybe we could get rid of them for about an hour.." he said as they kissed.



Jack was not happy about leaving Sara but the fact that both Robert and his brother along with Dean would be there to watch over her made it easier. That coupled with the fact that Ben was with him made it complete. " You think this about more then opium? " Jack asked as they unbuckled their seat belts after take off. " Not sure..I just get the feeling there is no great mystery. I think this is all about greed. Guess we will have to see how it all plays out." Jack nodded, "Any attempts made on you recently?" Ben shook his head, " No..you really care?" Jack smirked, " I just want to know what to expect traveling with you that's all." Jack stared at the window. Ben read a magazine, then flopped it down. " Ok..which do we want to talk about first Sara or Robbie." Jack turned his head and looked at Ben with a raised eyebrow. " Unless it is about keeping her safe until this is over, I have no intention on discussing MY WIFE with you. If you wish to discuss Robert's joining the FBI..that is something I am willing to talk about ." Ben clenched his jaw , " Well then let's discuss that."

chapters 64-65



Ben and Jack had gone back and forth for the entire plane ride about Robert. Bottom line was they both knew he would make a good agent but Jack's concerns centered more about Ben and how he would handle it. Jack did not want him putting him in more danger then need be . He was also worried about how he would handle the person aspects of their relationship. Jack didn't want Ben to oversee Robert's training. " You think I would use that to stay close...to her." Jack closed his eyes for a moment . considering his response, " it had crossed my mind." Ben chuckled , " Mine too. Seriously Jack , I more than likely will not get to be his training agent. they know our history. Well we're here, I will take the lead on this..then you can jump in.." Jack just stood staring at him, " Sure ..whatever works..I want this over."



Steve sat in the living room having gotten himself fully familiar with the building. He knew all points of entry and had planned exit routes. He had his gun on him and Robert had one as well..just in case. They had both decided not to mention the weapons to Sara not wanting to get her overly concerned. Sara was already exhibiting restlessness about staying in the penthouse but Robert and told her it was necessary for now. Steve knew that Jack trusted him to watch over her and his son and he would not let him down. Jack would be home tomorrow and then they would set about unraveling this mystery that he was now an important part of.



Jack and Ben sat talking to General Donnelly. " The Veterans Mental Health Fund has done great things for a lot of our boys. They do on occasion give money to the families . Of course you would have to speak to Michael. " Ben asked who Michael was. " Oh yes..sorry, Michael Barnes former Green Beret. He is in charge of the funds distribution. ' Jack cleared his throat , " Excuse me General..but have you ever heard of a Corporal John Barone. He ..we have found out , is the young man we buried . " The General was visibly uncomfortable." No..I can't say that I have..but I will look into him..if you leave me his info I will get started on that immediately and if you leave me your contact numbers I will let you know what i find out. " The rest of the interview yielded nothing. They left and stopped at a restaurant for dinner. " Well that was a waste.." Ben said. " Not so fast..he obviously new Corporal Barone, now we need to tie them together." Ben bit into his burger, " I will start with Michael Barnes. Green Berets are a tough bunch..I will see what I can get out of him , maybe have brought into the office. You talk to Sara? " Jack eyed him, " Everything is quiet." They sat in silence the rest of the meal. As they entered Ben's room to run a check on Michael Barnes , Ben looked at Jack, " If you hurt her, I will be there, you know that right?" Jack sighed, " Yeah..but you should really consider getting a life. You will never have her and I will never hurt her." When Jack's phone rang , he said goodnight to Ben, tomorrow the background check should be done and they would be heading back to New York. " Hey sweetheart...no I am heading off to bed..yeah I miss you too." Jack said into the phone as he walked out, and Ben poured himself a drink.



The day passed by slowly for Jack and Sara. He on his way back and her feeling like a prisoner, waiting for him to get back. Sara did manage to start her own background check on both men Jack had told her about. Sara was setting up the table for dinner. Dean was coming over later to play poker . The buzzer rang and Sara answered , " Yes , " Bobby the evening doorman was on the other end , " Mrs Deveraux? " that got a big smile from Sara, " Yes..Bobby? " she knew she would never tire of hearing that. " Mrs Deveraux there is a Chinese food delivery he for you. " Sara told him to send him up and was told, " Mr Deveraux said not to let anyone up." Sara frowned, " Well I said it's ok. " He hesitated but agreed. Steve was on the phone in the kitchen and Robert was in the den so when the knock on the door came Sara answered it. Steve heard Robert yelling for him and hung up. " Uncle Steve.." The elvetor doors had just closed and there were food containers strewn on the floor. " Oh god..they took her!" Robbie and Steve bolted for the stairs and Steve stopped and took the elevator on the next floor but Robert ran down the steps. He made it to the bottom as Steve's elevator was coming down as was the Penthouse elevator. Robert saw a man standing by the desk saying thanks for letting him wait inside as the van has no heat. he man turned and saw Robert bursting out of the stair well. He took out a gun and shot at Robbie who returned fire hitting him in the shoulder . The man ran out with Robert following behind, the man stopped short and swung around hitting Robbie in the face with his gun, knocking him to the floor. The man got out jumped in the van and sped off. The elevator opened and Steve was standing there, Sara was alone but looked scared. " Hey Steve..Sorry if I worried you. I was coming down to check the mail." Steve and Sara starred at each other, " Not a good idea Sara." She nodded, " I know..don't tell Jack ok?..I guess we should go back..Going up? " as she said that she lifted her eyes to the door in the elevator ceiling. Steve looked up and saw the door open slightly, "Yeah good idea." Steve made a move to get in but instead grabbed Sara's shirt and pulled her out and threw her to the floor. The man in the ceiling shot and Steve returned fire. Blood dripped down from the opening in the ceiling door. " I think I got him..you ok " Sara nodded then saw her son entering the building blood coming from his head, "Oh god Robbie ! "



" Something is wrong. There is no answer at the house phone and no one is answering their cells..drive faster." Jack said as he tried not to go into panic mode. Jack and Ben turned the corner and saw the police lights and barricades. Jack's heart stopped..as did Ben's . " Oh no..Sara.." Ben and jack raced towards the barricades. Ben flashed his badge and they were allowed access. Jack could only think of her, he had to find her. More than anything he needed to know she was alright. He saw Robert sitting in the back of the ambulance, " Oh no Robert!.." they ran over to him. " I am fine Dad...really" Jack nodded and after swallowing back his fear , he asked what he needed to know, " Where is your mother..Is she alright?" Then he heard the greatest sound in the world...her voice. " Jack!" He turned and saw her and they ran to each other holding tightly.




Jack held onto Sara for a long time , if only to still the beat of his own heart. " Are you you are all right? " He asked for the fifth time. " I am fine Jack..I am just happy that Robbie and Steve are ok." Jack turned to his brother, who was sitting in the chair feet on the coffee table drinking a beer. " I can never thank you enough for what you did today Steve. " Steve took a sip of his beer, "I would save those thank yous until this is over." Ben watched them all , they were a family he thought. The way Sara looked at Jack , she had never looked at him that way. He knew now that she never would. That was true love in her eyes...and in Jack's. He had seen Jack with Jennifer , although he could see that he cared for her, he could see the difference now. He finally admitted to himself she would never love him like that. That didn't change the fact that he loved her, with all his heart. It just meant he would have to stop pushing her, they did still have a friendship and that at least was something. " Ben ? " she said loudly. "Hmm ? Sorry..I will have the background check tomorrow..we will take it from there.. ok? I have got to get some sleep. Tell Robbie when he wakes up that I am glad he is alright." Ben stood and walked over to Steve , " Nice work tonight Detective Johnson." Steve thanked Ben for his help with the local Police . Sara went to get up to walk Ben to the door, " Not necessary, I will show myself out, " He stopped and faced them again, " I am glad you weren't hurt...Good night...Mrs Deveraux , " Then with a nod of his , " Jack " Jack replied with a small smile, " Agent Todd."



Everyone was ready for bed, Dean having arrived after Ben left complained on missing all the excitement. He and Steve were staying in the living room...just in case. Robert was still sleeping , after Jack had insisted he take a sedative. Jack watched as Sara prepared for bed . He did not even want to think about what could have happened had his brother not have been there. " Stop dwelling on what could have happened Jack.." she said as she slipped into one of his tee shirts. Jack stared at her eyes wide, making Sara laugh. ' I know you too well.. Let's just focus on ending this as soon as possible." Jack turned the blanket back for her and she climbed in. She draped arm and leg over him and he sighed. She kissed his neck and snuggled against him. He held her tightly, " Ok Jack..go ahead..you will not sleep well if you don't verbalize it." Jack smiled he rolled her onto her back and kissed her , covering her body with his. " No..I don't have anything to say. I will however show you.." Jack made love to Sara ..first tender and loving..then with reckless abandon. They slept as they always did wrapped around each other.



Robbie tossed and turned. He started talking in his sleep ..just mumbling at first then louder. He was there..back in his cell , when they came for him. They kept hitting him, shouting for him to tell them where it was..the more he told insisted that he had no idea what they were talking about, the angrier they got. Then they brought in a small figure with a burlap bag over their head arms bound in front of them...no...her. It was a woman , he could tell by the clothes. They kicked and hit the woman and she sobbed. They pulled the bag from her head. " NO! Mom !..Let her go you bastards !" Still they shouted over and over , demanding he tell them where IT was. They ripped open Sara's shirt " It's alright Robbie..it's going to be alright. " But he knew it would not. The started slicing her with knives and Robbie started screaming at them , desperate to be free of his restraints. They asked again..again he told them he didn't know. The grabbed Sara's hair and pulled her head back, exposing her neck. " No .. let her go..I'll kill you..all of you! " Then with a quick slice they cut her throat from ear to ear and shoved her body onto the ground at his feet. " NO !!! no..no.." Still he could her voice , so calm and soothing, " Robbie..sweetheart ..it's alright..everything is alright. " Robbie shook his head , " It will never be alright..I am sorry Mom.." He started to cry...then he heard his voice...his fathers voice.." Robert !..Robert..open your eyes..." Robbie tried to free his hands but still he was restrained . " Robert..it's Dad..open your eyes and look at me...come on..fight to open your eyes..Please ..Robert come back now.." He fought to open his eyes..he told himself over and over that it was a nightmare. When he finally opened his eyes his father was there , holding onto his shoulders , shaking him. " They killed her..they killed Mom. " Jack moved aside and she was there, " No honey..I am fine...I am just fine..it was a nightmare that's all." he stared at her for a moment, " Mom?.." She could only nod, tears in her eyes for the hell that sleep brought to her son. He hugged her tightly and she stroked his hair. " it's alright..everything is going to alright." she said as they sat on his bed.

Chapter 67


" What exactly is this all about Agent Todd? " Ben eyed the former Green Beret, he told him that they were looking into Corporal Barone and how he ended up with Robert Jamison's dog tags. " His parents are very influential in their field. Both are well know and respected investigative journalists. They want to know how this happened and why. " Barnes fidgeted in his chair, " Isn't that something for the military to investigate?" Ben chuckled, " It seems a number of agencies are looking into now..Marines, FBI..CIA..You were a Beret..you know the deal." Barnes nodded, " Yeah..it's all political bulls**t. " Ben studied the hard lined , weathered face of the man sitting across from him. " A young man lost seven years of his life and lived through hell..I would hardly call that political bulls**t. That young man is like a son to me..so you see I have a personal interest in this as well." Barnes shifted in his chair again. " of course I never meant to imply the young man hadn't suffered..in fact the Veterans Fund was reviewing his case and he is eligible for a sizable check to help with his medical and mental health bills that he may incur due to his imprisonment." Ben squinted and tilted his head, " Really? Did General Donnelly suggest him?" Barnes blinked quickly, " He did yes..In his position he comes across many soldiers who could use the help of our organization. " Ben smirked , " Let's talk about the fund...shall we?"



After about an hour of talking with Barnes Ben stopped by the penthouse. Jack had to run to the office even though he was technically on his honeymoon. He told them all about his meeting with Barnes. " I don't want their money." Robbie said. " You can turn it down but...it might be a way into what is going on there." Sara shook her head, " No way..he is not getting involved in this.." Robbie pointed out that he was already involved. " I would like to discuss this further..with your father as well." Robbie paced, like his father, " Fine we can talk to him about but Mom..you know I am not a kid. I am a grown man. I know it's hard for you, as we both missed out on the transition, but I am a grown man none the less. I will make my own decision . "



Robert had called Katie and postponed their date until tomorrow night. He talked with his father and mother and uncle for a few hours, in the end against Sara's objections Robert would do as he wished. Jack tried to impress upon her that they could not dictate what he will or will not do. He also pointed out that as an agent he would be doing dangerous things and she had better start dealing with it. Steve locked up and and they all went to bed. Sara went to take a shower and Jack came in a few minutes later. " What are you doing?" She asked with a small smile. ' All these people coming and going around her is cramping our spontaneity. " He said as he soaped her up and massaged her back. " Oh Jackie..that feels so good." He smiled at those words, " Indeed it does.." He wrapped his arms around her and soaped the front of her from behind. He rinsed her off and then he pressed himself against her. Sara braced her arms on the wall and Jack entered her. The feel of the warm water and his strong wet body wrapped around her drove her wild with desire. Jack couldn't get enough of her, he went from soft and tender to uncontrolled passion in a heart beat. They moved together slowly then with more purpose. Jack pulled back and Sara turned to face him, throwing her arms around his neck. He lifted her up and put her up against the wall,pounding together in perfect sync and rhythm, reaching an explosion of love and passion.



" I am telling you, he is going to find out sooner or later. He knows the players..he just hasn't figured out the game yet. The reporters..they are smart too. I took measures to rid ourselves of him ..no it can't be stopped. The plans are in motion. If all works out as planned we will have the disk and Agent Todd will be out of our hair. " Barnes reported into the phone. " I want as few casualties as possible..you hear me?" the voice said. " Yes sir..I hear you. We will do the best we can." Barnes said with a frown.



Ben was finishing up for the night when Agent Hecter Ramierez came into his office. " Hey Benji..how's it going man? " Ben smiled, Hecter was the only one he ever let get away with calling him that. They had served together and went through FBI training together as well. " It's going ..some days better then others." Hecter flopped in the chair in front of Ben's desk. " Yeah I hear that. I heard about Sara getting married.." Ben sat back in his chair, "No I don't want to talk about it..but thanks anyway. " Hecter laughed, " If you change you mind..or just want to get drunk with somebody.." Ben took a deep breath, "Getting drunk?..I can do that..let's go." It turned out that only Ben really drank while his friend nursed a beer. Hecter just listened to his friend. " Give me your keys..I'll drive." Ben got up and handed him the keys, " I love her Hecter..what do I do now? " Hecter put his arm on Ben's shoulder, " You get on with life my friend." Ben went to the men's room and Hecter went to get the car. As Ben exited the bar and walked down the street he heard a loud explosion. He ran around the corner, to see his car engulfed in flames...Hecter was dead.
