Chapter 142
Jack could not sleep. He tossed and turned checking on Sara and Max all night. The brief moments he had fallen asleep he was taunted by visions of Harper. He would tell him how he was still worthless and that he was going to lose Robert..again. That the life he had built with Sara was all an illusion and he would lose her as he had lost Jennifer. But to his credit Jack faced his demon, telling him he would not put doubt in his mind as he had done in the past. Suddenly, Jack felt something wet against his skin and struggled to open his eyes. It was Max..licking his face. " So you are awake then? I suppose you want breakfast in bed too?" Max tilted his and stared at Jack. " And so you shall have it...I am so relieved that you are going to be alright." Max had his head on Jack's chest and he pushed himself up onto his elbows. He wrapped one arm around the dog's head and leaned down and kissed his head, " Thank you.. for all you did for us. Now I will see to your breakfast and have the doctor take a look at you." The word doctor made Max give a small whimper and that made Jack chuckle. " I know how you feel..I hate doctors as well." Jack got up and checked on Sara. She was sleeping, but he could see she was as restless as he had been. "What demons are you battling I wonder" he said softly as he kissed her head.
Sara was not sleeping well. Her dreams were made up of all the different endings that could have played out. She watched as Jack was shot and lay bleeding on the floor and she felt the bullet hit her in the back as she ran to him. Then it was Steve at their door telling them Robert had been killed, then He was telling her it was Dean. Then she saw him.. handing over his weapon dropping down to his knees. Sara could hear him pleading for her life and telling her he loved her.Next the shot ringing out and hitting him in the center of his head and his body falling to the floor. Sara's eyes popped open and she sat up quickly. She looked around the room and Jack was talking with the vet. He rushed to her side, "Sweetheart..you okay?" Sara took a deep breath, " Yes..I'm fine..bad dream." Jack gave her a sad smile, " Seems to be going around..I didn't sleep well either." Sara winced, the pain from her side shooting through her. " Side hurts?" Jack asked as he brushed the hair from her face. She nodded slowly, " How is Max?" Jack told her he was doing well and would have to stay a few more days at least. Jack sat next to her and they watched Max slowly eat his breakfast. Sara took a deep breath and her head fell on Jack's shoulder,"Coffee." she muttered. Jack chuckled " Of course.. Let's get ourselves something to eat and then I want you to go home, rest for a while and then start writing..that is if you're up to it." Sara smiled, " Always the editor..."
Robbie was not sleeping well. He was panting as he ran to the door. The smell of recently fired weapons still heavy in the air. He entered the living room, gun in hand...sweeping the room. They were there on the floor. Dean bleeding from the chest and Ben..bleeding from a bullet wound to the head. "No..No..Please .." The words coming from him as he sprung up. Robbie looked around, he had fallen asleep in the chair the night before and he was still there. He turned to the right and saw Ben still asleep in the chair next to him and he sighed. Robbie took the blanket off, that Ben had placed over him and threw it over Ben. He stretched out as he looked down on Ben then his eyes went upward. "Thank you..thank you for keeping us all safe." He looked back down at Ben then towards the kitchen, "Coffee.." he muttered as he headed to put a pot on.
Ben was not sleeping well. He was on his knees hands behind his head, Whitehouse was standing, phone in hand when the man answered. He looked at Ben and smiled, "Kill her.." She shouted his name and then the shout rang out. " No!" The sight of her dead and blood stained before him. Then he saw himself shooting the second man and hitting Whitehouse, forcing him to call his man and tell him to release Sara. But of course he heard her shout again and the sound of the gun going off. "No!" he shouted as he pulled the trigger again killing Whitehouse and dropping to his knees. Ben's eyes popped open. He knew he could not live if she had died. Then he looked up towards the bedrooms and thought about Dean. He wondered if killing that man would bring him any solace. He could smell the coffee and followed the scent into the kitchen. He found Robbie sitting at the table, mug in hand. Robbie looked up at him and smirked. Ben returned the look and poured himself a cup, taking the seat across from him. Each sighed softly as they sipped. " Sleep well? " Robbie asked. "Nope...you?" Robbie swallowed another sip, " Nope." Ben nodded, " Well at least we're all still breathing" he said as he raised his mug. "True.." Robbie said as they clinked their mugs together.
Dean winced as he tried to turn onto his side. Whitehouse was getting ready to kill Ben, who was on his knees. Dean pulled the gun from under the table and shot him, taking a bullet in the shoulder. Then he jumped up pushing Ben down, he shot the other two men. "Oh please Shutterbug..that is SO not how it happened." Dean turned around, gun still smoking. " Sure it did..see" he said pointing to the scene. Angela stood hand on her hips, " I suppose this is the story you're going to be telling too right?" Dean smiled, " Hell yeah." Angela shook her head. " I got him Babe..I killed the man who took you from me." She smiled sadly, " I know..but is it going to help you?" Dean looked down at the man, " I don't know..but it's a start." She was standing behind him and kissed his cheek. "It will get better..I promise. I love you." Dean closed his eyes, " I love you and miss you terribly." He could feel her voice tickling his ear, "Try not to embellish too much will ya? " Dean looked around the room, the gun in his hand and he blew into the muzzle. He heard Ben chuckle, "Give me a break." Dean smiled as he lay sleeping..peacefully.

Chapter 143
Jack would not leave Max at the animal hospital. They had told him that if he was not there..they would have to put Max back in the cage and that was unacceptable. They removed his intravenous line...so he took him home. Jack collected whatever medications he would need and told the doctor he would bring him back in the morning to be checked again. Sara smiled as he walked into the living room with Steve carrying his dog. " He was stable...he will be much more comfortable here..." Jack reasoned. Sara shrugged, " You don't need to convince me..I am in total agreement." Jack smiled and he placed Max on the sofa next to Sara. He glanced up at her. " I don't want him on the floor..I just need to get his big pillow bed from inside." Sara smirked, " Uh-huh" she muttered as she stroked Max's head. " It's nice to have you home" she said softly. Sara looked up as Jack headed into the den for the dog's bed. " Have you heard from them? Did he tell you who the leader is ? Do you know what his plan is yet?" Steve stood hand on his hips, " Whoa! That's a lot of questions there shortstuff. Yes ..I've heard from him and I am not telling you anything more." Sara opened her mouth and Steve held up his hand, "Save your breath. I practically had to sign a blood oath not to tell anybody anything." Sara frowned making Steve chuckle, "They should be home tomorrow..you can ask him yourself." Jack came into the room carrying the pillow, " She might bust before then."
After Steve left and Max was "in bed" Jack sat next to Sara sipping his coffee. "Stop reading over my shoulder Jackie. You can read it in a bit," she said as her fingers pounded over the keyboard. " Or will you bust before then?" she added with a smirk. " Fine..I'll wait." Jack sat back and put his feet up on the coffee table. " Perhaps we can take Robert and Katie to dinner when they get back." Sara nodded, "That would be nice. After Robbie and I have our date though." Jack turned and looked at her, " You two always call you outings dates..why is that?" Sara stopped typing and looked up..thinking. " Well it started when he was five years old." Jack could see her face soften just thinking about it. " Tell me a story.." Jack said. Sara turned and looked at him, nodded and closed her laptop. " Well..one night Dean and Angela stopped by on their way out to the movies.." Jack listened as Sara told him that when Dean said they were going out Robbie ran inside and got his jacket and shoes.
" I'm ready to go too!" he announced. Dean leaned down put his hand on the little boy's shoulder. " Sorry sport not this time. I'm taking your Aunt on a date." Robbie frowned, "What's a date?" he asked. Dean looked up at Sara who shrugged. " Well," he said tentatively, "It's when two people who really like each other, spend time with each other doing different kinds of things." The little boy asked "What kind of things?" Dean frowned, " Eating, going to a movie or a museum things like that." Robbie nodded then looked up at his Uncle. " But don't you like me and Mommy too? Why can't we go? " Sara and Dean exchanged glances, " Yeah Dean..how come?" Dean thought about it for a moment, " Because some dates are special ones. Sometimes you want to take someone you love out just to show them that you love them very much. Next week the four of us will do something all together..okay?" Robbie was staring at his mother as he listened to Dean. He nodded then turned to his uncle, "Okay."
Jack watched her face as she was reliving those memories. "So..is that why you call them that? " Sara laughed, "I'm not done with the story yet.."
Ben was making dinner, he promised Dean he would make his famous marinated steaks. Robbie and Dean were inside playing Gin as he started his marinate. "You need more garlic.." Ben closed his eyes tightly, " You came down her to tell me that?" When he opened his eyes Angela was sitting on the counter, smiling at him. " No..but I just thought that I'd mention it." Ben took a deep breath, " I know what I'm doing Bud." Angela smiled at the use of his pet name for her. The Bud stood not for buddy for her propensity for butting into everyone's business. "Fine..let's talk about why I'm really here. You are worried, about Robbie...right?" Ben nodded softly. " I am not sure the Kid really thought this whole name thing through." Angela watched him as he added the garlic into a ziplock bag filled with other ingredients. He began hitting the steaks with a meat mallet and she placed her hand over his. " He has..trust me. It's something he needed to do for himself." Ben looked at her, " Did he consider what the repercussions might be?" Again she nodded, " I think he did..but you don't. She isn't going to blame you..you know that don't you? But Jack...Jack will." Ben smirked as he looked down on the steaks, " I could care less what Jack thinks about me. " Then he turned back to her, " But Sara..I promised her I was not going to undermine her or Robert's relationship with Jack. I don't want her thinking I went back on my word..it's all I have left with her now." Angela stuck he finger in the bag, " Still say it needs more garlic. Speaking of her..what are you going to do now? Things have shifted a bit since the train haven't they?" Ben drew in a deep breath and nodded slowly. " Look, I know what you are thinking so...want some advice? " Ben laughed, " Like my saying no would stop you." Angela hopped off the counter, "You remember what I told you that night in the bar?" Ben furrowed his brow, " yes.." She put her hand on his shoulder,"It still applies.." she said as she stuck her finger in the bag again. Ben thought about that for a moment and smirked. " Needs more garlic." Ben sighed and turned to find Dean standing there. " What?..I am just saying it's good but it needs a little more garlic." Ben yanked the bag away from him, "Everybody is a food critic all of sudden." Dean poured himself a cup of coffee and told him that Robbie, who was beating him badly at Gin, was on the phone with Katie. "Looks like a storm is rolling in" he said as he looked out the kitchen window. "In more ways then one" Ben muttered. " You talk to the Kid yet..about the whole name changing thing? " Dean nodded,"Yeah..he's ready for the fallout. He is one tough kid." Then he sat on the stool and watched as Ben put the steaks into the bag. " What about you? You ready for another inevitable round with Jack?" Ben blew out a breath and thought about his "talk" with Angela. "Dean..I am ready for whatever comes my way."
"One night about a week later I came home..." Sara began telling Jack. " Robbie was standing in the dining room waiting for me. That was unusual because he normally came running in..arms stretched out yelling 'Mommy,Mommy!' He was wearing his red corduroy overhauls and a white turtleneck. He had his shoes on the wrong feet, something he did a lot. His hair was wet and combed down...he looked adorable. " Sara could see that Jack was trying to get a picture in his mind, but try as he might, every time he tried picturing a young Robert he could only see JJ. Sara reached behind her to the sofa table and grabbed her purse, pulling out her wallet. " I carry this picture with me always, it was taken that night." Jack took the photo and studied it, a sad smile spreading across his face. His eyes fell on her first, Sara so young and very beautiful. Her face beaming with joy. Then he looked to the small boy. Dark brown hair falling softly on to his forehead, large deep blue eyes sparkling. His smile so bright, Jack could almost hear him giggling. " Go on...please" he said quietly. " Well he had spilled his piggy bank out all over the table and he had Dean counting it out. I asked him what he was doing..."
" I'm taking you out on a date" he said beaming with pride. Sara looked at Dean who shrugged, " Don't look at me, he's been talking about it since I picked him up this afternoon." Sara put her hand through Robbie's hair, " You want to take me out on a date?" she asked, a bit surprised. " Yeah..Member what Uncle Dean said? He said when you love somebody and want to show it, you take them out on a date. I love YOU so.." Sara's eyes welled up with tears, "Oh honey you don't.." but Dean began shaking his head and she smiled at him. " This is a wonderful surprise..I am very excited..let me go change okay?" The smile on his little face was almost too much for her to stand. Dean gave Robbie money, but the little boy wanted to use his money. "You are..I'm going to take the change and give you the paper money. You can't pay for a date with change." The little boy pondered that for a moment, "Oh..okay. Boy this date stuff has a lot of rules don't it Uncle Dean? " Dean laughed, "You have no idea sport. so...where are you going on your date?" Robbie smiled and put his hand up to cover his mouth, " Ice skating by the big gold man." Dean raised his eyebrows, " Rockefeller Center.. that's a great place for a date." Robbie frowned," Do I have enough to buy hot dogs and hot coco too?" Dean looked down at the money in his hands, " Sure..go grab your coat" and when Robbie ran to the coat rack he reached into his pocket and took out a few more bills. Dean folded the money and placed it in the front chest pocket of Robbie's overalls. Then he helped Robbie zip up his coat. Sara came out and they left. Once outside she lifted Robbie into her arms, " So..where do you want to go?" The day was sunny but cool and they skated then sat down and ordered. When the check came Robbie handed Sara his money, " You count it out okay Mommy" then he looked at the waitress, " I'm taking my Mommy on a date! " She pinched his cheek and smiled at Sara, "He is sooo cute!" When they got home Dean and Angela were sitting in the kitchen having coffee. " So how was your date?" Angela asked. Robbie told them every last detail then paused and looked up at Sara, " Did YOU have fun too ?" Sara picked him up and kissed him, " I had the best time ever. Thank you very much." Robbie went to put on his pajamas but stopped at the kitchen door. " Don't worry Aunt Angie, I will save up some money and take you and Uncle Dean on a date too." Angela walked over to him and hugged him, " Thank you honey." Sara started pouring herself a cup of coffee and Angela walked over to her, "That is one amazing little boy we have there." Robbie came running back into the kitchen and jumped onto Dean hugging him, " Thank you helping me." Dean held him tightly, " Hey that's what Uncles are for."
"And that is why we always call it a date." Jack stared at the picture of their son. He should have been the one to tell him what a date was. He should have given him the money to take Sara out. Jack furrowed his brow, " When did the flowers come into play? I noticed he brings at least one when the two of you go out." Sara gave him a sad smile and he knew. "When he was about eleven he noticed that Ben would bring me flowers at least once a week. So Robbie asked him why and Ben told him that his father had told him if he really loved a woman he should bring her flowers at least once a week or whenever he took her out. From that point on he insisted on giving me at least one flower before we went out." Sara began chuckling, "Sometimes he would pick them from the potted plants out front, but mostly Ben would get them for him." Jack looked back at the photo of his son. He was completely adorable and looked so happy and that made Jack's heart ache. Life was so unfair, he thought. He missed being a part of that happy little boy's life. What will happen now? Jack had thought that they relationship was moving closer and that they were really bonding. Then Ben got shot and the world seemed to change. Why still did this man have to loom so large in their lives?
Robbie was doing the dishes as Ben sat cleaning his weapon. "You think you are going to be needing that anytime soon?" he asked as he glanced backwards at Ben. "Nope...a clean gun.." Robbie finished his sentence, " is a happy gun yeah I know. So we got a plan? " Ben put his weapon back together and placed it down in front of him. Robbie turned around and leaned back against the counter, "Well?" Ben tugged on his ear, " Problem we have is that I don't have any concrete evidence. I know who it is but I can't prove it so...I'm going to have to get him to confess. I think I have a pretty good plan and Steve is going to help me execute it. " Robbie frowned, "What about me? What's my part in it? And let me just add there better be a part for me." Ben sighed, " Pushy...just like your mother. Yeah there is a part..a very important part in fact." Ben laid out his plan as Robbie poured them a cup of coffee, " Sounds good to me." Ben took a sip, " Glad you approve. What do you say we take the horses out one last time? " Robbie gave a sad smile, " I'd like that..I really love this place, I'm going to miss being here." Ben put his cup in the sink and put his hand on Robbie's back, " I know what you mean, but you can come back whenever you want to..as often as you want. Now let's get those horses out before Dean wakes up and wants to attempt to go with us." Robbie stood up and both men put on their coats hanging on the rack by the back door. " Hank and Miranda coming by in the morning to say goodbye or are we stopping there?" Ben sighed as he zipped up his coat, " We are going there, Miranda wants to make us breakfast. You all packed up?" Robbie followed Ben out the door, "Yup...pretty much." Both men stood on the back porch and took a deep breath of the cold clean air. They walked over to the barn to find Dean sitting on a stool. "I just knew you two would try and sneak off without me. So.. Who's going to help me up on my horse?" The three men rode out for an hour or so and after the horses were back in the stalls, Robbie brought them all out coffee and they sat around a bonfire. Ben lit a cigarette and Robbie frowned, "No more smoking for you when we get back to New York." Ben smirked, " Sure thing Kiddo." Robbie stared at him, "I'm serious Ben." After about an hour of laughing and talking they all got quiet, all were lost in the crackling sound of the fire and each watched the smoke as it disappeared into the night sky. All lost in the thoughts of what was to come. Robbie knew he would have to face his mother and Jack, telling them why he made the choices he had. He knew in his heart his mother would understand, but Jack...he would be hurt. That of course was never his intention, but it could not be avoided. It would create more friction between Jack and Ben, something else for him to worry about. Dean was lost in his thoughts. He knew he could not go back to his apartment..their apartment. He knew too he could not live with Sara and Jack for too long either and he was not looking forward to being alone in a new place. He could move back into Robbie's apartment but he was a young man and he should have his own place and would want privacy to be with Katie. Taking a deep breath he knew he would have to suck it up and find a place of his own. Then he began thinking about Angela's things and he pushed those thoughts away. He definitely was not ready for that. Ben had so many things running through his mind. The inevitable confrontation with Jack.... and then there was Sara. His heart began to beat fast at the though of seeing her again, but he swallowed hard and pushed that thought from his head. First and foremost was getting the bastard that was behind it all. He was going to make him pay. Putting him behind bars would be satisfying but should he want a fight..that would be just fine by him. " Okay..I'm cold and we have to get up early, let's head inside" Dean said as he got up. Both Robbie and Ben fell silently behind him. Ben watched them walk up the porch steps and he realized, he was going to miss this place too.
Jack lay in bed looking up at the ceiling. He slowly removed Sara's arm, then her leg that she had draped over him. He slowly climbed out of bed and after checking on Max who was also sleeping, he put on his robe and headed into the living room. He stopped in front of Robbie's room and went in. Opening the closet he went right for the box on the top shelf. It was filled with photo albums and...yes down at the bottom, there were a stack of dvd's that Sara had made from their old family movies. Jack sat on the couch with Max who by now had followed him inside and watched his son grow before his eyes. Robbie and JJ were so similar..yet very different. Robbie seemed a bit more mature then JJ, and Jack wondered if that was because he had no real father around. By the fourth disk and Robbie's eleventh birthday.. he was there. Jack watched his son play with and look at Ben with total admiration. He watched Sara and Ben and how affectionate they were and how they looked at each other. Not unlike the home movies he had of Jennifer and himself with Abigail. Had Sara seen photos of him with his family? Did that help make her decisions for her? If he were being completely honest with himself, if he had seen the videos of them back then, he would have done the same thing in her place. He watched Robert age before his eyes and his heart ached for all he had missed. Of course he knew the initial choice was made for her by Harper, but still. He wondered if he and Jennifer would have been able to endure the sudden appearance of a child and former lover. What if...what if...one could go crazy thinking of the possibilities. No...forget about the what if's Jack though...and concentrate on the what now's. What is going to happen now...that thought echoing through his mind as his eyes closed and he drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 144
Robbie was staring at Ben and Dean as they secured their carry on bags in the overhead. Without turning his head Ben asked, " What's the problem Kid? " Robbie smirked, " I was just thinking that maybe I should have shaved before going home" he said as he stroked his beard. Dean chuckled, " What's the matter, you worried Katie is going to hate the beard? " Ben waited as Dean slid into the window seat, " I think I'm keeping it. It makes me look....edgy" Dean said with a smirk. Both Ben and Robbie laughed at him, " Well it does! " Ben rolled his eyes and turned to Robbie, " Go on...get in" Robbie frowned, " Why do you have to get the aisle seat? " Ben frowned back, "Because I always get an aisle seat..now get in. " Robbie scoffed but slid past Ben, " I hate the middle seat...you never get to use the armrests." Ben exhaled, " Take the armrest Kid..or am I going to have to knock you out for this flight?" Robbie frowned at him and placed his arm on the rest with a smirk. " Geez...No need to get hostile about it."
Jack kept glancing at Sara as they exited the shower. Max was laying on the floor in the bathroom and Sara opened her mouth then closed it quickly. " Something wrong sweetheart?" he asked trying to hide a smirk. Sara put a smile on her face, "What could be wrong? " she asked as she put her arms around his neck and pulled him down into a kiss. " That was an amazing start to the day." Jack pulled her close and kissed her again, " We keep this up and we won't be getting dressed anytime soon. " Sara pulled back and touched his face, " To be continued?" Jack took her hand and kissed her palm, "Absolutely" he said softly. As they dressed Sara casually asked Jack, " Has Steve told you anything? " Jack laughed, " No, of course not. He knows better I think." Sara nodded, " I guess so..it's just...I am dying of curiosity." Jack froze and stared at her, " No..not you! " Sara rolled her eyes, " Ha ha very funny." Jack pulled his sweater over his head and picked up his brush and began brushing his wet hair into place. " We'll know soon enough, the plane should be landing in about forty five minutes." Jack put the brush down and sat on the edge of the bed. He pulled his socks on and after pulling on the first shoe, he sat staring at the shoe in his hand. He looked up as Sara was pulling on her leggings. She pulled the purple sweater on and pulled her hair out of the back. " What's wrong? " she asked when she saw his expression. " Things are going to be different with Robert, I can feel it. Why do you think he changed his name back?" Sara exhaled and sat next to him. She placed her hand on his thigh. " I don't know Jackie, but I do know Robert...and he would never do anything to intentionally hurt someone. I am sure he will explain it to us and then we will just have respect it and move on. I think you are reading too much into this. " Jack covered her hand with his, " How could I not? He has not even spoken to me once since he took off with..." Sara shook her head, " Again you are assuming the worst. You think Ben had something to do with it don't you?. " Jack put on his other shoe and stood up, " Of course I do..don't you? " Sara looked up at him, " No...no I don't. He promised me he would not do anything to interfere and I believe him. Let's just wait and hear Robert out before we go accusing anyone of anything..okay?" Jack sighed and kissed her on the head, " Sure..let's get some breakfast..I'm starving." Sara smiled and hugged him, " You should be, I know I am..we worked up quite an appetite this morning." As Jack followed her down the hallway to the kitchen he couldn't help but think she was wrong. His mind was made up. He was ready to fight for his son and it did not matter who he had to fight but he was not going to lose him again.
Katie was walking quickly to the gate after she watched the plane land and begin to taxi. She felt a tap on her shoulder and turned to see Steve's smiling face. " Fancy meeting you here.." Katie laughed, " Yeah well...I couldn't wait for them to get back to the city so..." Steve put his arm around her, " I kinda figured one of you would show up here." Steve was chuckling at the way Katie was bouncing around trying to see over the people exiting the plane. " Here they come!" She said as she ran to the front of the gate. Steve followed behind and smiled at the sight of the three men. All three were in jeans and denim jackets. They each sported facial hair. Dean's was more of the unshaven look and Robbie's was a bit fuller than that..but not much. Ben's was thicker but groomed. "Robbie ! " Katie shouted as she waived her hand. Robbie smiled brightly and made his way to her. He dropped his bag and scooped her up. They hugged and then kissed. " I missed you so much" she whispered in his ear. " I know the feeling." He released her and she looked at him. Robbie smirked and rubbed his face. Katie sighed, " I can get use to it if you want to keep it." Robbie kissed her again. " And THAT is why I love you." Steve approached Ben and Dean shaking their hands and giving each a one armed hug. " The mountain men return." Katie and Robbie walked over to them and she hugged each one. " It's good to see you, I am so happy you are all safe" she said as she hugged Ben. He kissed the top of her head. "Good to see you too." Robbie picked up Dean's bag and his own and Dean walked with his arm around Katie. " How's your shoulder?" she asked. " It hurts.. let me tell you what happened..." Robbie glanced back to Ben and he rolled his eyes, " Here we go.." Ben shrugged, " Let him have his fifteen minutes. " Then he turned to Steve, " Everything set?" Steve nodded, " Yeah..you think you can get him to admit anything? " Ben nodded, " Yeah..I do. You didn't tell Sara and Jack anything have you? " Steve stopped and stared at him, saying nothing. Ben stopped walking and turned around, looking at Steve. He laughed and walked back to him putting his arm around his shoulder, " Okay.. But I had to ask."
Max began to growl and made his way slowly to the door. " They're here!" Sara said excitedly. Jack swallowed and stood up waiting for their entrance. She could hear her son's voice as he greeted the dog. "Mom!" he said as he scooped her up into an tight embrace. " I missed you" he said softly. "I missed you too honey. Let me look at you" she said as she pulled back. "What's with the beard?" Robbie smiled and Dean stepped around him "Standard for all mountain men" he said with a smile. Sara wrapped her arms around his neck. " I missed you, how are you feeling." As they spoke Jack approached Robbie slowly. Robert turned and smiled at him. Jack hugged him and Robert returned it but pulled back quickly. " Well I like it" Jack said. " I think I will keep it a while, you know see if I really like it. Listen..thanks for taking care of Mom and watching out for Katie I owe you." Jack frowned slightly, " No need..we're family." Robert nodded softly, "So..Max seems to be doing well." Abrupt subject change, Jack thought. " He is yes. Your mother no longer objects to his opening doors...for now." Robbie leaned down and was petting Max, " I would think not." As Robbie stood tall Jack put his hand on his shoulder, " Robert..." He sighed and turned to Jack, " Please , not now Jack. I promise I will talk to you and explain everything. Just give me a day or so..okay?" Jack...he called him Jack. That one word sliced right through him. " Of course..I'm here whenever you want to talk." Robbie gave him a sad smile, " Thanks." Sara looked past Dean and glanced around the room, " Where's Ben?" Dean had walked over to Jack and gave him a one armed hug. " He went home, he wants us there in the morning for breakfast and to go over what we are going to do next." Jack looked to Sara then back to Dean. " Did he tell you who he believes to be behind all this?" Dean shook his head, " Not me..he figured I can't tell what I don't know." All eyes turned to Robert, " You will just have to wait until tomorrow." Sara opened her mouth and Robert wrapped his arms around her again. " I'm starving Mom, got anything to eat?"
Sara and Robbie went to go get pizza, leaving Jack and Dean on the sofa and Katie in the kitchen to set up, a job she had volunteered for. She knew he wanted a few moments alone with his mother and she would have him all night. Robbie brought two beers over to the booth as they waited for the pizza. Sara rubbed his cheek with her hand, " You okay?" Robbie took a swig from his bottle. " Fine" Sara lifted her own bottle, "Okay" After a moment he looked down at the bottle in his hand. " I am fine..for the first time since I have come home..I feel fine." Sara only nodded. She knew her son like no other. He would now pour his heart out to her, he was dying to. He could never keep much from her and anything he could not tell her, he would spill to Dean or Ben. " Mom..I know how hurt Jack must feel but I had to do this...change my name back I mean. I had to do it for ME. I don't know if you or he can really understand. " Sara took a deep breath. " Try me.." Robbie took another sip and rubbed his forehead. " When I came home...I was desperate to get back to my life. But everything was different. You had moved on from Ben and me and our family was different. I didn't want to be left behind again..you know? I jumped into your new life, I just wanted to be a part of it. I excepted everything without question which is not like me at all." Sara took his hand, " I know. I was a bit shocked that we didn't talk much about what had happened at home while you were gone. Why you didn't push me about Ben." Robbie closed his eyes, " You were a Deveraux..I had a brother and sister now and they were Deverauxs..I thought if I became one I wouldn't be an outsider." Sara squeezed his hand, " You could never be that. You are my son..the most important person in the world to me." Robbie smiled, " I know that and I knew that but I was scared. I was scared all the time. I felt like I could lose it all at any moment. I know now of course why I felt that way, but like those nightmares those feelings were real to me.After Ben killed Khalil..I started to feel like myself again. Like my life was my own. But I wasn't me..not really.. I was Robert Deveraux. I didn't know who he was or how to be him. I'm not Robert Deveraux, I'm Robert Jamison and that's who I want to be again..that's who I need to be." Sara stared at her son, " I understand and so will your father. If changing your name back brings you peace and contentment then I am all for it. No one deserves that more than you do. Besides I happen to be very fond of Robert Jamison." Robert took a deep breath and let it out slowly. " Thank you Mom...thank you so much. Do you really think he will understand? " Sara smiled, "Of course...he's your father, he loves you and your happiness is all that matters to him too." As she watched him go to the counter to retrieve their pizza she could not help but wonder why he had not brought up Ben and his renewed devotion to him. The look on his face had told her there was more he wanted to say and he would..when he was ready. He glanced back at her and smiled making her sigh.
After they finished dinner Sara gave Robert and Dean their belated Christmas presents. Dean was playing with his antique camera and Robbie was taking pictures of his framed Yankee jersey signed by Derek Jeter. " Did Mom tell you he actually wore this in a game?" Katie told him she had. Jack sat in his chair wearing the cowboy hat they had brought him back. "Is it me?" he asked. Sara made a face, " Sure...just don't wear it outside this apartment." Robert laughed, " The only one who really looked good in it is Ben. You should have seen him Mom. Actually I was really impressed by him and Uncle Dean and how they handled the horses. I did okay, but they excelled on them." Jack stared at his wife. " He keeps forgetting that Ben and I grew up around horses and have ridden all our lives." Sara nodded, " Remember when we use to go every weekend." Robbie smiled, " Yeah you weren't too bad. I wish you could see the cabin Mom. The place was beautiful." Jack took a gulp of his scotch and Sara watched him. " So..is this big plan going down tomorrow? Or am I not allowed to ask?" Robbie gave her a smirk, " You can ask anything you want, doesn't mean you'll get an answer.not I am pretty sure he plans on setting everything in motion. I know we have to be at the FBI offices at some point tomorrow." Dean yawned and stood up, " Hopefully this will all be over by this time tomorrow night. I'm beat, I think I'll head off to bed." Robbie stood up as well, " Don't forget to take your medicine." Dean put his hand on Robbie's face, " I will...thanks Dad." Katie stood up, " We should be going too, you need to get some rest too Robbie." He nodded and walked over to Jack and stuck out his hand, "Good night" Jack stood and shook his hand, " Sleep well Robert. It's good to have you home." Sara walked them to the door, " Ben wants us there between nine and nine thirty." Sara asked if he wanted to go together. " I'll call you in the morning and we'll decide then. Good night Mom, I love you." Sara kissed Katie then her son, " Good night sweetheart, I love you too." Sara came back into the living room and stood silently as Jack poured himself another drink. " Tell me Sara is there anything that Ben doesn't excel at? " he asked as he turned and stared at her. Sara felt a pain in the pit of her stomach. " Jack..please don't do this. I talked with him tonight and he explained everything to me. He is very worried that you're not going to understand. He said that.." Jack held up his hand, " Please..I'll wait for him to tell me." Sara sighed "Just give him a chance to explain it to you." Jack nodded, " Alright.." Sara crossed the room and kissed him, " Coming to bed?" Jack kissed her on the top of the head, " In a few minutes, I want to just finish this" he said as he held up his glass. When she reached the edge of the room she looked back at him, " Don't be too long." Jack walked over to the fireplace and stared into it. "He's not the only one that will be explaining things me. I believe Agent Todd and I need to have another talk."

Chapter 145 (sorry it took so long..I am having computer problems again )
Chapter 145
Ben entered his apartment, looked around and flopped down onto the arm chair. The quiet was deafening, he thought. On the coffee table was a large gift wrapped package, a card tapped to the top. He knew her handwriting instantly and he sighed. "To add to your collection...Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday, love Sara" he read as took a deep breath and unwrapped the package. The box was wooden and had carvings on the top. He released the old latch and lifted the top. Inside was a pair of antique dueling pistols. Ben took one out and studied it. She had remembered he always wanted a pair and that made him smile. He touched his hand to the small bulge in his shirt pocket, something he had brought for her. Ben blew out a long breath, he could not stop thinking that perhaps Steve had been right. He should alter the plan and change the location. The more he thought about it the better he liked Steve's idea. He picked up his cell and pressed the redial button. " Hey...so...I think you're right, let's do it your way." Silence on the other end.." Steve? You there? " Ben frowned. "Yeah I'm here...just needed to make sure I not still in dreamland, you admitting I'm right and all." Ben chuckled, " Wow your funny when you're sleepy, Do you think we can still move forward tomorrow? " Steve rubbed his eye and glanced over at his sleeping wife. "Yeah shouldn't be a problem. See you in the am." Ben disconnected and stared down at the pistol still clenched in his hand. He was going to duel tomorrow, he thought. Not with pistols, he hoped, a duel of the mind, of right and wrong and loyalty and betrayal. He placed the pistol back in it's case and put his feet up on the coffee table. "Way to quiet in here" he said as he closed his eyes.
Sara got up and went to the kitchen, opened a bottle of water and chugged it down. For reasons she could not understand it bothered her that Ben had not come back to the penthouse with the others. Now she was worried about him and Jack. He was not sleeping well, the tossing and turning keeping her awake. Her heart ached for him but she had to side with Robbie. If this is what he needed to do to become whole again then so be it. Jack would have to try and understand. But she knew no matter what he was going to blame Ben. That he would, of course confront him. Sara worried about that. That might put Robbie in protective mode and move him further away and closer to Ben. She would have to try and talk Jack down. She had saw the turning of his wheels all night. She chugged more water, the cold soothing her dry throat. She stared at the bottle and fingered the label. He was going to do what he needed to regardless of what she said or did, just as she would do. Sara looked at her cell and picked it up. Maybe just text him, she thought. She typed in the words and her finger lingered over the "send" button.
Ben's phone buzzed and his eyes flew open. He saw her name on the screen and pressed the button, "Hey...you okay?" He stared at the words. "Sure..i'm fine just heading to bed now." he hit send. The phone vibrated a moment later. " Okay..just checking, I was surprised you didn't come over." He thought a moment then typed his response. " I was too tired for an interrogation. The pistols are...perfect, thank you." he hit send. " Glad you liked them...see you in the morning then?" He responded, " Yeah..goodnight Ace." A moment later, "Goodnight, sleep well." He stared at the words, tossed his phone onto the table and headed for bed.
"Ben is probably exhausted, I'm sure he is asleep by now." Katie said as her head rested on Robbie's chest. He sighed loudly, "I guess so, I just wanted to check in." he kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer. "So what did your mother say?" Robbie tucked his hand behind his head and stared up at the ceiling as they laid in bed together. He recounted their conversation to her. " I knew she would understand. Are you worried about your father? " Robbie thought about that for a minute. " I never meant for this to hurt him, I just need to do this. Hopefully he will understand and we can move forward." Katie ran her hand across his chest. " What does Ben think about all this?" she knew of course how much that meant to Robbie. He chuckled, " He is staying completely neutral. He said it's my life, my name, my decision." Katie smiled, " Smart guy.. not to influence your choice. Is tomorrow going to be very dangerous?" He slid down and turned to face her, their noses touching. " Minimal.. nothing we can't handle." He pulled her close and kissed her, "What about you..think you can handle..." She kissed him again silencing him, " You...absolutely." He rolled over on top of her and they made love again.
There was a banging at the door and Ben opened it cup in hand. He was shirtless in sweat pants and barefoot. He sipped his coffee and turned from the door, "You're early" he muttered. Dean stepped inside and closed the door. "Yeah I know. Can I get a cup of that anyway?" They entered the kitchen and Ben handed him an empty mug. " Help yourself." Dean poured himself a mug and sat down at the table as he watched Ben stretch his back out. " How you feeling?" Ben asked. " Okay I guess, you? " After a few minutes Ben looked at Dean over the rim of his mug. " So..I've been thinking....you should move in here..you know.. with me." Dean smirked into his mug, " What's the matter...you miss me?" Ben leaned back and put his feet up on the empty chair. " Something like that" Dean swallowed his coffee and stared at Ben, "Not sure I can afford this place." Ben told him he would pay the bills but that Dean would supply the groceries. "The way you eat I'd be broke inside two months." Dean knew that Ben was lonely. After all that time being with him and Robbie to come home to the empty apartment must have been rough. He was lonely too. While staying with Jack and Sara was nice, they were a married couple and he felt like a third wheel being there all the time. " Deal.." he said as he stuck his hand out. Ben smirked and shook his hand. After a while Ben started the bacon and they heard the front door open and close. " Another early bird.." Dean said as they turned their heads towards the door Ben taking his gun off the top of the fridge. "Hey .." Robbie said as he and Katie entered the kitchen. " You trying to get shot?" Ben asked. " Don't you knock?" Dean asked. Robbie frowned, " Why would I knock?...I have a key." Katie kissed them both hello, "May I be of some help?" Ben smiled, "Sure..thanks." As they began breakfast Dean told them that he was going to be moving into Ben's apartment. " You know..roommates, like the odd couple." Ben laughed and Katie smiled, " I think that's a wonderful idea." Robbie frowned and asked where Dean would be sleeping. " I do have an extra bedroom, remember?" Again Robbie frowned, "That's my room. Where am I suppose to sleep when I stay over? " Dean laughed and he Ben exchanged glances, " The couch is very comfortable." Robbie grunted and complained. " How many places do you need kid? You have your own place, Katie's place and a room at your mother's." At that the bell rang, Robbie muttered as he went to answer the door. Ben looked at Katie and they shook their heads in unison. Steve came in with Jack and Sara. Ben did not turn around but called out a hello. Sara stared at his back, the criss-cross of scars, the newest ones still pink. When he turned around their eyes met and each smiled softly. She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. " I'm glad your home." He pulled back and smiled, "Thanks..me too. Please seat down." Jack stood staring at him, "Nice of you to dress for the occasion." he mumbled as he passed Ben. Ben frowned and looked down at himself, " Oh man..excuse me a minute, Katie..will you play hostess for me?"
As they ate Ben and Steve went over everything and everyone was told what they needed to do. " So I will be going down to the office around three and that..as they say should be that. I just want to thank all of you, for being there for me and for seeing this through with me. I know how high the cost of this has been.. for all of you" he said with a quick glance to Dean. " Umm...Ben? What's my job?" Katie asked as she stood in front of him, eyes wide and a big smile on her face. "Well..Katie...Robbie will explain it to you." She turned and smiled at him then frowned slightly, "I do have a job...don't I?" Sara looked at her son, " Of course you do. You are going to wait for my call, then you are going to leak it to the press." Sara said with a smile. Katie smiled brightly, " Great..so I should come down there or wait here?" Robbie leaped off the counter, "Here..here.. we will get you the numbers you need and you can make all the calls." Jack took out his phone, " Come Katie let's get you those numbers." Robbie looked at his mother and mouthed "thanks". Dean stood up and said, "Come on Kid let's see if there is anything in my room you want." He and Robbie walked out and Sara came up next to Ben, "What's that all about?" Ben glanced back at the door, " I asked Dean to move in here, he's taking Robbie's old room and the Kid is not pleased." Sara was a bit surprised, "I see..that might be a good idea..for Dean." Ben was filling the dishwasher and looked up at her, "and me too, I got use to having him around." Sara watched him as he put the dishes into the washer, "You're not responsible ..you do know that right?" Ben smirked, " Yeah..I know but it will be good for the both of us." Ben stood up straight and looked at the door, " Sara I have something for you." He reached into his pocket and removed a small box. Sara opened it and found a beautiful pair of gold and ruby earrings. " They were my mother's, I found them in the attic. I want you to have them." Sara shook her head slowly, " Oh Ben they're beautiful, but I couldn't." she reached her hand out to give them back. Ben pushed her hand back, " I need you to have them. You don't have to wear them, just keep them." He smiled as he looked down at the box, "Just label them and put them in your memory box...okay? This is really important to me, please." Sara sighed and took the box back, " Of course I will, thank you for entrusting them to me." He leaned down and kissed her on the head. "How about a little help with the dishes?" Sara frowned "Whoa..I'm sorry, I have draw the line somewhere."
Jack turned from Katie and saw his brother standing there, hands on hips and he gave him a smile. " What's up?" he asked him. "I thought you were too quiet this morning now I know somethings wrong." Steve said with a frown. "I don't know what you mean?" Jack said with the smile still pasted on his face. "You got one of those Happy Jack smiles on your face, that means something is bothering you. You want to tell me what that something might be baby brother?" The smile slid from his face and he sighed, " You really do know me well don't you? I just want this over and done with. I'm tired of.." he turned away without finishing his sentence. Steve smirked , " Ben?" Jack turned back to him, " Yes! Okay..yes I am tired of Ben, hearing about him, worrying about him...dealing with him." Steve put his arm on Jack's shoulder. " You think he's going to disappear when this is over? Look..he's tied to your wife and kid, your friend, even me. You two may not like it but it seems you are stuck with each other. Try and find a way to live with it or you are going to make yourselves and everyone else miserable." Jack looked at him, " And if I can't?" Steve sighed, " If you can't then sides are going to get picked and you might end up losing someone." Jack knew what he was saying, " You mean Robert? Don't you?" Steve nodded slowly, "Yeah, don't push too hard, you might end up pushing him away. Give it some time, he's still emotional from all that's happened." Jack nodded and thanked his brother. " Nothing like good advice from my big brother." Steve laughed, " Yeah that's me, a regular Dear Abby."
Dean was in his new room, Steve had left and Katie was in the kitchen with Ben and Sara cleaning up. Jack had just finished a call to the paper and turned to find Robert there. "You got a minute? " he asked. Jack gave him a sad smile, "For you, always." Robert pointed to the couch, " Please.. sit down. I know you're hurt by what I did but I'd like to try and explain it to you." Robbie told him everything as he did to his mother. He watched Jack's face closely. " Surely you, more than anyone can understand." Jack took a deep breath "I do..but I wished we could have discussed it a bit. Obviously, you last name doesn't not effect the fact that I love you and you are my son." Robbie looked down, "But do you understand why? When you found out your real name was Johnson..why didn't you change it? Because you were Jack Deveraux..that name was who you had become who you were..right? " Jack put his head back and closed his eyes, "It's a bit more complicated then that I'm afraid." Robbie blew out a breath, "Look.. I am sorry if this hurts you, but I just want to take control of my life and get it back on track. I hope we can build a relationship. I just needed to take a step back..to move forward...if that makes any sense." Jack looked at Robbie, "And that step back..it brings you closer to Ben...and further from me." Robbie shook his head, " This has nothing to do with Ben. " Jack smirked, " I beg to differ. I believe it has everything to do with him." Robbie stood up, " Well you are wrong. It has nothing to do with Ben and everything to do with me. I thought you would think that but I had hoped that you would understand." Sara came out of the kitchen, "Jack are you ready to go? I want to start the story so I just have to add the names when I call it in." She stood and stared at them both, " Is everything alright?" Jack stood and Robbie leaned down and kissed her cheek. " Everything is fine Mom. I will see you later." Sara, eyes never moving from Jack's, called after her son. "Robbie, be careful." She walked up to Jack and placed her hand on his chest. " Are you okay?" Jack covered her hand with his own. "Yes..come on let's get to the paper and get the wheels in motion."
Steve and Robbie entered the FBI building looking all business, Dean following behind closely. When they were alone in the elevator, Steve turned to Dean. "You sure you can handle the audio equipment? " Dean nodded, " Positive.. but I need at least ten minutes." Agent Darrow saw them as they came off the elevator. " Hey..Robert, it's great to see you. Where's Ben?" Steve stepped forward, " He's not here yet. Robert and Dean are here to give statements." When the other agents began coming over to talk with Robbie, Steve snuck Dean into the surveillance room. "Okay man, do your thing...but be quick about it." Dean frowned, "Yeah, I will go as fast I can." Sara and Jack came in next, and Ray came out of his office. Steve and Dean joined them after a few minutes. They were all standing there chatting when Steve and Robbie turned to Agent Darrow. "I'm sorry Vic, some things have been brought to light and we need to talk with you." Darrow looked at them, "What kind of things? In regards to what?" Robbie stepped forward, " The framing and murder of Agent Olsen and the attempted murder of Agent Benjamin Todd." Ray looked at them, " You have the evidence? " Steve looked at their boss, " Yes sir I believe we do." Agent Darrow shook his head, "That's impossible. I am clean, I have never done anything wrong and I would never hurt Ben or Nate. He was my partner for 15 years for God's sake." Agent Toomey looked at Steve, " Take him to interrogation." Sara stepped in front of him, "Vic..how could you do something like this?" He looked down at her, fear in his eyes, "I didn't do anything..Sara I swear."
Toomey stood behind the glass, hands clasped behind his back, as Steve and Robbie pounded Darrow with questions. Sara, Jack and Dean were all listening in from another room, ready to call in the story and hand over the confession they hoped to tape. Toomey stood rocking on his heels a small smile on his face. "Hello Ray" Toomey turned and found Ben leaning in the door jamb. "Benjamin, good to see you in one piece." Then turning back to the glass, " I can hardly believe it was Vic all this time. What have you got?" Ben sighed, " You tell me Ray. What are going to find on him?" Toomey did not turn around, " I don't think I understand what you mean." Ben walked in and closed the door behind him. " Oh that's not true. I think you know exactly what I mean. It was a good plan, to set Darrow up too. Everyone already believes Nate was involved. He and Vic have been partners for 15 years, he wouldn't have been able to keep that from him, It just makes sense that they had to be working together. With Whitehouse dead, who was there to dispute it. Except..he inadvertently told me who his boss was. He told me that his boss had called Sara my Achilles Heel. Only one person had ever called her that and I remember it vividly. I remember it you see because on our very first date...the first time I had kissed her, I had said those very words to myself in the elevator. So when Whitehouse told me that..it came flooding back to me...the night it was said to me.
Jack watched Sara as she covered her mouth with her hand and whispered "Oh no.." softly. Dean put his hand on her knee and rubbed his forehead with his hand. "Oh man...this sucks." Jack closed his eyes, he understood it now...where this was going.
It was the Mayor's ball at Gracie Mansion. Ben was sipping his champagne and watching as Sara glided across the floor with the Attorney General. She was his now and still she took his breath away. She smiled at him and he winked at her, touching his fingers to his heart then his lips. She pursed her lips in a kiss to him from over the shoulder of her dance partner. " It was inevitable I suppose.." the voice said from behind him. Ben smirked, " What is? " The voice leaned in closer, " Every superhero has one you know. It was inevitable that you would have one as well." Ben sipped his champagne, "What the hell are you talking about?" A hand touched his shoulder, " An Achilles Heel. Superman has Kryptonite, you have Sara. She is your weakness..your Achilles Heel." Ben turned and looked at the man, "Well let's just keep that between us..okay?" The man smiled, " Your secret is safe with me."
" That man was you, Ray. You said that to me..you knew what she meant to me, what it would do to me if anything happened to her and how that could be used against me. I'm not sure what hurts more, knowing that you are not who I thought you were, that you are really a criminal..a murderer or that you could have me killed so easily. That you would hurt Sara to get what you wanted. My God.. We spent holidays with you." Ben could see his reflection in the glass, his eyes darting around. His shoulders sagged for a moment then he turned around and faced him. " That was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I wanted to take you in, make you my right hand but I knew you would never do that. You are too filled with duty, patriotism and loyalty to your country and that badge. That was why they picked you to investigate this. The great Ben Todd, everyone knows you are above reproach. I waited until the last possible moment. For what it's worth Benjamin I am sorry." Ben shook his head, "Save it for the judge. Raymond Toomey.. I am placing you under arrest for murder..bribery and anything else I can think of." Ray took a step back from Ben and pulled out his gun, " I'm sorry Ben..I can't go to jail. " Ben raised his hands, " Ray..you can't get out of here, they are listening to us. Please..just give me the gun." Jack was already running out the door when Sara and Dean sprung up and ran after him. Toomey saw Steve and Robbie bolt for the door. " You were always my best protege'." he said as he turned the gun on himself. "No! " Ben shouted as he lunged for the gun. The shot rang out just as Steve and Robbie came bursting into the room.
