Chapter 68
Steve jumped at the sound of the buzzer. He ran to answer it. " Yeah..Bobby..what's up?" he asked the night doorman. Steve had made a point of meeting all the doormen in case they tried to get one of their guys in. " I am sorry to bother you Mr Johnson, but Agent Todd is here. He said he needs to speak to Mrs Deveraux right away." Steve sighed and out of the corner of his eye he saw his brother and nephew standing there. Jack nodded and Steve told Bobby to send him up. Robbie went to get Sara. Steve let Ben in and they could see how upset he was. " Sorry to come here so late but..," looking at Jack, " I NEED to see Sara." She was standing just behind Jack and Ben's eyes were fixed on her. Sara had on a robe and her hair was slightly messed from sleep. Jack followed Ben's line of vision and saw her standing there. " What is it? What's wrong?" He pushed passed Jack and stood in front of Sara. " Hector..he's dead. They killed him...I killed him." Sara put her hand on Ben's arm. "Oh my god..Ben..I am so sorry. Come in.. sit down..tell me what happened. " Jack watched them sit on the couch together and Robbie came next to him and said, " Hector was Ben's best friend. They served together and joined the FBI together. They have known each other since they were about 19. " Steve said, " Oh man..that's rough." Jack could only say, " Yes..it is." He hated to admit it but he was upset that Ben could find nowhere else to go but to Sara..HIS wife. " Robbie..will you make a pot of coffee please? " Robbie had his hand on Ben's shoulder, " Sure," Ben looked up at him, " I would rather have a scotch kid." Sara put her hand over Ben's making Jack cringe, " I think you've had enough alcohol Benjamin. Coffee would be best." He nodded. " Tell us what happened." Ben heard her say us but for him..there was only her. He told her the story, breaking down at the last of it. " This is not your fault Ben. Don't do that to yourself. " She told him as he leaned into her and she held him.She looked up at Jack and mouthed that she was sorry. Jack nodded quickly and left the room.After holding on to Sara for a few minutes he regained his composure and sat up.He held Sara's hands as she soothed him. She knew how much his friend had meant to him. He took a deep breath and asked her to get the others. They guys came in and he spoke to them. "I have changed my mind. Robbie..you get that check , you just send it back, and you are not to go anywhere alone. I already have agents watching the building. " Why? Nobody has come after me." his said , containing the anger in his voice. " We aren't going to take any chances." then to Steve, " I know you have some concerns about the roof and balcony. Tomorrow you and I will go over it all, I will get some help over here for you. " Ben thanked Sara for listening and being there for him. As he walked past Jack to head to the door he paused, " Hey Jack?" Jack turned and looked at the back of Ben, " Yes?" Ben took a deep breath and then blew it out, " Thanks." Jack said nothing but watched him as he left.
Jack came back into the living room and watched as his son paced the room. The endless sleepless nights were starting to take a toll on him. As the nights wore on he would get increasingly angry and nervous. On nights that this would happen, he would hold up in his room or the den to keep away from others. " This is ridiculous !..I am so sick of people making decisions for me..running my life." Sara moved to go to him and Jack stopped her. She looked up at him and he shook his head. " All my life people have made choices for me. These last ten years I was told when to eat , when to sleep, hell I was told when I could go to the bathroom. No more..no more..I run my life. From now on I am in control of my life. Nobody is going to make decisions for me or tell me what to do again." Then turning to his father who was staring at him, " I know what you're thinking, joining the FBI, I will have to take orders. But that is not what I am talking about here." Jack swallowed, " I know that." Robbie nodded and started pacing again. Sara took a deep breath , " Robbie I am sure that Ben didn't mean to tell you what to do , he just wants to keep you and all of us safe. He is just doing what he thinks is best." He stopped in his tracks. " Like you ? You always did what you thought best for me right? " Sara frowned, " Of course . I would do anything for you honey. " Robbie shook his head, " Why..why then didn't you ever ask me what I wanted? I get when I was a baby and a small child you made your choices, but you had no right to keep making them..IT for me. You robbed me Mom. You alone keep me from knowing my father. That was my right and you took it from. " Sara walked towards him, " I explained all that to you." Robbie stood in front of her , " Yeah I know..it wasn't safe or it wasn't the right time for him. I don't buy it. He left you..and you couldn't handle that. I don't know I guess you didn't want the rejection again but you know what mom? That was his choice and mine..not yours. Just because he stopped loving you.." Jack came between Robbie and his mother. " That's enough Robert ! Don't you ever say that again. You can't begin to understand what drove us to stay away from each other. But never in all those years had I stopped loving her. Now we have all had a very long night..I am going to bed, " he then looked to Sara and she nodded. He took her hand and they left Robert standing in the living room. Sara was wiping her eyes when he closed the door to their bedroom. " Jack.." He held up his hand to silence her. " He is having a difficult time Sara. The young man hasn't slept a full night in ..well I don't know how long. He didn't mean the things he said..of that i am sure." They stood staring at one another and Jack broke away first going to his side of the bed. " No I don't wish to discuss what happened with Agent Todd..other then to say that I feel for him..I really do..but I do not intend on sharing my wife with him. " Jack got into bed and laid on his side facing away from her. Sara sighed and laid on her back. Jack took a deep breath, he felt badly for her and things that went on this evening and for the way he was acting now. He rolled on to his back and put his arm out over her head and she rolled over and held on to him. "Thank you. " she said softly. " I am still bothered." She smiled, " I know."
It was afternoon and they were setting up for lunch. Jack was no longer upset and they were waiting for Ben to arrive and go over the security issue Steve had. Robbie entered the kitchen and they all looked at him. jack was first to speak, " Good afternoon Robert, would you like something to eat. " Robert sighed " Yeah..thanks.." He came up behind his mother and wrapped his arms around her whispering into her ear, " Mom..I am so sorry for the things i said last night. I just ..I don't know..lost it. I don't want you to think I really feel like that. I love you Mom..I am sorry if I hurt you. Will you forgive me? Please." Sara turned within his hold and hugged him back, "When have not?"
The doorman brought their mail up when he was relieved for lunch, something Steve had arranged . Jack was in the den on the phone with the paper and Steve and Ben were on the balcony talking about the roof . Sara found the letter there for her. It was phone number. The note asked her to call it, saying they had information on John Barone. Sara looked around and saw that everyone was occupied. She took out her cell and dialed. The voice on the other end was a woman. Sara identified herself and the woman told Sara she worked at the Veterans Fund office. She was leaving and moving out of state and she knew what had happened to Robbie. She asked Sara to meet her later that night . She would tell her everything she knew..it may not be much, but it might help. Sara agreed. After dinner they all went back to their own things.Robert had went out with Katie, with an agent as his driver and Jack had run down to the paper, an agent with him as well. Steve was in the dining room with the blueprints of the building that Ben had provided to him. Steve felt better now that Ben had agreed to put a guy on the roof. Sara took her purse and phone and tiptoed out of the living room . She knew there would be hell to pay later but she was willing to risk it. As she opened the door it slammed closed, Steve's hand had shot out and closed it. "Where do you think you are going shortstuff?" Sara explained it to him and waited for his responses. " You reporters are all nuts. You hear "story" and you just go running. You ever consider this might be a trap. " Sara frowned " Yes I did..I was willing to risk it." Steve shook his head, " Billy Jack would have my head..and rightly so..if I let you outta here alone. " They stood looking at each other. " I must be crazy too..let me get my coat." Steve said as Sara smiled. She really did like her brother in-law a lot.

chapter 69
" Sara..I am home " Jack walked around the
house and his heart sank. They were all out?
Where the hell were they? His heart raced and
he could barely breath. He called her phone
and she answered on the second ring, She
told him she was with Steve and she would
explain everything later. Jack paced for forty
minutes until they finally got back. " Where
the hell did you two go?" Jack asked . Sara
explained everything to him. " Are you out of
your minds? How did she managed to talk
you into it? " Jack asked Steve. Before he
could answer Sara told Jack that he had
caught her sneaking out and decided to just
take as he knew she was not going to give
up. Jack stood staring at her and without
moving his eyes asked his brother to give
them a moment. " This is unbelievable. You
lied to me! You promised me this would
stop. You promised you would not
Knowingly put your life in danger anymore. "
He said as he paced. " Jack..I had Steve with
me." Jack stopped and faced her, " And if he
had not stopped you? You would have went
out anyway, to hell what that would have
done to all of us. You didn't care how
worried we would be or what could have
happened to you." Sara looked down, " I
didn't lie to you..jack you have to give me a
little slack here. I have been on my own for a
while," Dean and Angela had come in but
they remained quiet. " I am not use to having
to think about what my actions mean to
others. " Angela and Dean moved into the
room, " Well thanks for that." Angela said in a
snippy tone. " Ang..you and Dean have each
other. While if anything had happened to me
yyou would be upset but..well you would
still have one another." Jack stopped pacing
again, " And now? You never even considered
your son or your husband. " Sara shook her
head, " Ok I get it I screwed up..this is a work
in progress here Jack. I have to get use to
thinking about how my actions effect others.
I have been doing everything you have asked
of me haven't I ? I am trying... can't you give
me that? I just want this over. " Jack started
pacing again, " Ok I get what you are trying
to say, but what happens the next time you
'screw up' ? You go out and never come
back..what would I do without you? " Sara
exhaled. " I am serious Sara. No more screw
ups, What would I do without you? " Sara's
head was pounding and she was tired. Tired
of being a prisoner in her own home, tired of
being scolded like a child, " Probably go
back to your old life in Salem." Jack froze
and looked at her " What did you say? " Sara
covered her mouth and shook her head, " Oh
Jack I am sorry .." She went to touch him and
he pulled away, " Don't ! Is that really what
you think? Don't you EVER say something
like that to me again. If you really believe
that..then we have a major problem. " Sara
exhaled, " I don't " Jack nodded the fact that
you could say that to me when I am trying to
express how much I love and need you is
insulting. " Jack walked away from her and
grabbed his coat. " Jack..where are you
going?" Jack walked past a shocked Dean
and Angela, " Out..I need to get the hell out
of here for a while. " and he slammed the
door shut behind him. Sara flopped into the
chair and her friends sat down opposite her.
" How could you ..how could you say that to
him? " Angela asked. Sara closed her eyes
and put her head back, " I don't know..I got
annoyed at being reprimanded for fifteen
minutes. I was just being sarcastic. I didn't
mean to actually verbalize it. "
Jack walked down the block , his agent
close behind him. He stooped and got a
coffee and bought one for the agent as well.
As he walked he thought. He knew of course
she didn't really believe that but it hurt him
none the less. He started thinking about this
mess they found themselves in. He thought
about Robert and his nightmares. He kept
coming back to what he had said, that he
didn't know what they wanted . That they
kept asking where it was. Then jack got an
idea. What if they thought Robbie had
something of Barone's. What if Corporal
Barone had slipped him something without
him knowing about it or he had forgotten
about it. Jack thought about it some more.
They had sent Robbie's personal belongings
home. Maybe something was in there.
Robbie could have the incriminating
evidence that Barone was using to blackmail
the big boss.Jack turned and headed back to
the penthouse. He had to get a look at
Robbie's personal items that were shipped
back. Perhaps he could end this tonight.
Robbie sat across from Katie at the
restaurant. " I hope you don't mind. I didn't
want to postpone our date again and my Dad
was only going to be in New York for a day
or so. Not worry though, he always leaves
right after dinner. " Robbie smiled , " No
problem.." Just the a older man came over to
their table. He was wearing a a uniform. "
Robbie this is my father , General Malcom
Donnelly"

chapter 70
Jack searched Robbie's room. Just when he was about to give up he looked under the bed and there it was. An olive green metal box. Jack opened it and found Robbie's personal effects. There were letters from Sara,Dean and Angela. There was even a letter from Ben. Jack didn't wish to invade his privacy anymore then necessary so left them. He saw photos of a very young Robbie with Sara. He went through everything, but there was nothing there. Jack sat on the bed staring at the box. There was a baseball cap in there that Jack held in his hand. He noticed that it was heavier than it should be. He examined it closer and he found a second lining sewn into it. Jack found a Swiss army knife in the box and used it to slice open the lining. Inside it he found a computer disk. " Oh Jack..you are good." Jack placed the disk inside his suit jacket pocket.He looked at the cap and decided to place it on a hook on the wall. He then closed the box and put it back under the bed. Jack was almost giddy at what he had found as he took the main elevator back down to the lobby. He got off and walked into Crystal, the blonde that had caused a huge fight between Sara and himself." Hey Jack..haven't seen you in a while. How are you?" Jack smiled back, " Hello Crystal, I am fine and yourself? " Crystal moved up close to Jack , " I am good. We never did go for that run." Jack cleared his throat, as the elevator arrived, " Well that's my ride, have a pleasant evening. " She stepped closer and Jack looked at her. She moved her jacket and showed him a gun. " Get in the elevator Jack and keep your hands where I can see them. " Jack raised his hands slightly and turned towards the elevator. The agent was by the door and his eyes met Jack's. By the time he got into the building the elevator doors closed. The agent took out his phone. " Ben, we got trouble."
" Dad this is Robert Deveraux." Robbie had a bad feeling. "Sir It's nice to meet you." General Donnelly shook his hand. " Mr Deveraux ? I see you changed your name." Katie looked at her father. " You know Robert?" The General shook his head, "No but I have met his parents. How are you doing son?" Oh yeah, Robbie had a bad feeling.
Jack and Crystal were in the elevator heading up to the penthouse. " What is this all about?" Jack asked. Crystal looked jack up and down. " Your son has something we want. " Jack asked what it was and she told him it was a disk. " What's on it?" he asked. She told him it was better he not know. Then she made a call. " I'm in...yes..but I can ..yes..alright." When they got to the top floor , Jack was not too worried , he was fairly certain that Steve could handle her. " Hold it Jack. Unlock the door to the stairway first." Jack looked from her to the door. "Now Jack or I will make sure that your bride gets shot first." Jack swallowed and unlocked the door. Two well built armed men came in and they all entered the penthouse.
" Oh excellant, then it's almost over...I will join you shortly....No..you will wait for me, I am on my way." General Donnelly hung up from his call and headed back to the table."I had no idea that your parents knew my Dad. I really only see him once or twice a year..maybe. My parents have been divorced since I was about ten." Robbie nodded, "Listen to me Katie..I can't explain this all now but will you please just follow my lead. I have got to talk to my parents." The General came back and they all headed out the door. General Donnelly aked if they wanted to go for a ride, " Well thank you sir but I have a car and driver just across the street. We are suppose to meet my Parents for drinks." Katie looked at Robert then said to her father, " Thanks anyway , it was good to see you.." The General lost the smile and looked at Robbie, " I am afraid I must insist." After a short ride they arrived at the heliport . When they all got out the General turned to his daughter and said, "Go home Kathleen , this is of no concern to you. Mr Deveraux will call you in the morning wont you son? " Robert eyed the older man. He could see at least two more men stationed at the helicopter. "Sure I 'll call you tomorrow, If I am still alive. " Katie insisted again that she was going. After her father informed her again that she wasn't she responded, " Fine..as soon as you get on that thing I will be calling the police." Her father's head spun to look her in the eye. " You will do no such thing. " Robbie spoke up, "He's right , don't call the police. Agent Ben Todd of the FBI is really who you need to call." Donnelly told them both to get on the chopper. Katie sat with Robbie her arm holding on to his. Then they took off. " Where are you taking us? " Katie asked. "To see the Deveraux's" he said with a smirk.
They were all sitting in the living room waiting . " You have been living here for years..why now?" Sara asked. Crystal told her that she was approached before Jack had arrived. " I had sought out Agent Todd but he was too stuck on you. Then you brought Jack home. I thought I had a chance to seduce him, but he too was a faithful man. Pity, I was really looking forward to that. I know you would have enjoyed yourself too" she said as she played with Jack's hair. He grabbed her hand and she pointed the gun at him when he did not release her she slowly moved it until it was pointed at Sara. Jack dropped her wrist quickly. " How do you inspire such faithfulness Sara ? I just don't get it." Sara her eyes locked with Jack's , " I think you are giving me too much credit. I am sure they could just see you as the scheming bitch you are. " Cyrstal backhanded Sara, and Jack moved towards her and both me pointed their guns at Jack , Steve and Dean. Sara smiled and winked at Jack , telling him she was fine. They all heard the hum of the chopper, Steve shook his head, " I knew that damn roof was going to be trouble." After a few minutes Robbie came in with Katie and General Donnelly. " Well the gangs all here..would you mind telling us what the hell this is all about and what our son has to do with it."
" Fine I guess there is no harm in telling it now." He told them how Corporal Barone had stumbled on their drug smuggling ring. He had found out that the General was providing the terrorists with weapons and they in turn got them the opium and helped get it to an easier location to get it out of the country. Then he told them that Barone was blackmailing him because his mother needed the money. They were suppose to get Barone to the terrorists who who get the information as to who and where the evidence he had on him was. But that's where it went all wrong. They had killed him by mistake and the soldiers got scared. So they switched Robbie for Barone. By the time he found out it was too late. He had made a deal with the terrorist to keep Robbie but they were not to hurt him anymore. " Gee.. thanks for that" Katie stood up, " You just left him there? What kind of human being are you? " Jack answered her, " A murdering traiter..or rather a greedy murdering traitor."
" All right enough..Barone had to have given you the disk.We have talked to and searched everyone else in your unit. You were the last one. Where is the disk young man." Robbie shook his head, " I don't know..I don't have any disk." Then the General grabbed Sara and pushed her to her knees, placing the gun at her temple. " No!! Let her go! " Jack yelled . Robbie said to him, " No please..leave her alone..I don't have any disk. He never gave me any disk." He cocked the gun and Jack yelled , " No wait..I can help you..just let her go..I ..." With a quick motion the General swung his arm and shot Jack. Sara screamed, "NO!! JACK!! " Angela screamed as did Katie. Steve dropped to his knees and held his brother. Robbie yelled, " Oh god..NO!" Then Donnolly got an idea, " Where are your things? ROBERT! Where are your personal effects from when you were in the Marines. They had to have sent them. " Robert could only see his father ,laying on the floor in his uncle's arms. " I have no idea." He turned to Sara , she was crying trying to get to Jack. " Where are the personal effects. " But Sara could only see the one love of her life, motionless and bleeding. He grabbed her by the hair and squeezed her face between his thumb and fingers. " CONCENTRATE MRS DEVERAUX ! There is still time to save your husband." Sara took a deep breath, "Downstairs..in the apartment downstairs." He released Sara and turned to Crystal, " Take Richards and Mrs Deveraux and see if we can't find what we seek." Steve was applying pressure to Jack's wound when Jack whispered to him. " Steve...Please..Don't let them hurt her...or my son..promise me...."
Downstairs Ben was organizing a swat team. He had Barnes in custody and after some pressure he had given them all up. They were going on to the roof and had all the exits covered. One of the other agents came over, " Ben we are ready ." Ben nodded, he begged god to keep her safe. " Ok..boys..let's rock and roll."

Chapter 71
" You stay by the door , Sara will take me to what we need." They got into Robbie's room and Sara pulled the box out and placed it on the bed while Crystal held the gun on her. Sara had not said one word and was eerily calm. " Stand in the corner and be a good girl and maybe you will get to see Jack alive again." Sara stood there as Crystal rummaged through Robbie's things. " I am sorry about Jack..he really was an attractive man. " Sara's was sick with worry and filled with anger. Her eyes darted around the room, she knew she had to get back to Jack..whatever the cost. She slowly began closing the door using her toe. She used as little movement as possible. When she got the door closed she eased the lock into place. She moved so slowly and was able to lift one of the trophies off the desk. She rushed Crystal and hit her with it.
"'Nobody is going to hurt them I promise you. Now you promise me ..you are going to hold on..I am going to get you out of this." Steve said to Jack. Jack did not have the strength to talk so he gave him a slight nod and squeezed his hand. Steve's eye roamed the room, He watched the General pace and Angela was crying and holding Katie as she weep as well. Dean had his hand on Robbie. The look of anger waiting for release was on Robert's face. Steve could see that he was waiting for an opportunity. They made eye contact. Steve moved his leg and Robbie saw the butt of the gun Steve had concealed.Steve motioned to Robert and Dean . They knew without words what was coming and what they needed to do. Robert looked to Dean and glanced back at the weeping woman on the couch. Dean blinked and then they were set. Steve eased Jack down onto the floor and whispered, " Be right back." He eased the gun out of his boot as Dean caught the attention of the soldier. "Maybe we could get them some water and we need some towels for his wounds." Dean said to him. " No " the General said as he paced, " No one leaves the room." Steve moved quickly, He jumped to his knees and shot the soldier and Robert lunged for the General as did Dean. They wrestled the gun from him and Robbie held the gun to him. Just then about six swat members burst through the glass doors of the balcony and Ben came crashing through the front door. They were ordered to drop their weapons . Ben came in and did a survey..no Sara. " Where is ...Oh god." He said as he saw jack on the floor. " He needs to get to hospital..NOW!" Steve yelled at him. "There are two more..a woman and a man, they took Sara to the apartment. " Steve told him. " Don't just stand there Detective..pick up your weapon..let's go get her." Ben said. Robbie picked up the gun and headed for the door too, " Hey..stay here, he needs you." Steve said to him . Robbie turned and looked at Jack. In the excitement of the moment he had forgotten. He dropped the gun and ran over to his father and Steve and Ben raced for the stairs.
Sara hit her with all her might knocking her down. But Crystal was not out, she held to the gun and her and Sara struggled for it, crashing into the wall and knocking photos off the shelves. Each woman screaming and gritting their teeth, trying to get the better of the other. Each had a hand on the gun. The soldier at the door heard the commotion and turned from the door , running for the bedroom. Steve and Ben were at the door , they were leaning on the wall and Ben nodded. He kicked the door in and Steve went low and Ben remained high. The soldier spun and shot. Both Ben and Steve shot at him and he went down. The rushed him and took the guy from him. They heard they noises coming from the bedroom and rushed the door. When they entered the women were rolling around on the floor when the gun went off. Ben and Steve both dove for them and pulled them apart each had blood on their shirts. But then Crystal fell to her knees. She had been shot. Ben grabbed Sara by the shoulders, " Are you hit? Sara..were you shot? " Sara exhaled , " No..I am fine. " She looked at Steve, " He's dead isn't he? Steve..Jack is dead isn't he? " Steve took her in his arms, " He's hanging on..let's get you up there..he needs you."
They were loading Jack onto a stretcher when Sara came running in. " Jack !" she leaned over him and put her hand on his face. " Mrs Deveraux we have to move..he's lost a lot of blood and we can't stop the bleeding. We will be taking him by chopper," the paramedic told her. " Sara?" his voice barely a whisper. " yes..I'm here" she said with a shaky voice. Jack swallowed, " You ok?" Sara shook her head, even now he thought of her only. " I am fine, Jack..I am so sorry about earlier..the things I said. " She leaned down and kissed him, " I will never forget it..i couldn't..I thank god every day for it. " They loaded him onto the chopper and the paramedic inside refused to let Sara on. Ben leaned in and flashed his badge, " Make an exception, this is his wife...she needs to be with him." Sara turned and looked at Ben and he gave her a small smile. Steve helped her onto the chopper and told her that they would meet her at the hospital.As the chopper took off, they put oxygen on Jack and he locked eyes with Sara and she gave him a sad smile as she held his hand. His eyes never left hers as his hand slipped from hers. " He's coding !" the paramedic yelled.
