Sorry Chloe - you were married to Daniel longer than a minute and a half. And it's not all Philip's fault that the one night stand happened. It takes two to tango.
I'm glad that Philip said that he was annoyed with the whole situation and that he didn't want to care. I know where the "but I do" is heading and I hate that, but at least he's being honest with her and himself about his feelings.

This is gonna be interesting, especially since neither one really wants to be in that situation.

Sigh. This isn’t going well. Good luck, Philip, but you may be fighting a losing battle.
What are our preview chances, boss?

Thanks, boss!

Chapter 3i
“I don't want to care, but I do, okay?” Philip said, his tone was testy.
“Lovely. Thanks a lot,” she said sarcastically.
“Well, what do you expect after the way things were left last time I saw you?”
Silence fell between them. After a moment, she quietly said, “You’re right. I expect absolutely nothing.” She pointed in the opposite direction. “So go. Turn around and go back the way you came.”
“I can’t.”
“Why not?
“Because like it or not, I’m involved now. I can tell something is up. You’re not keeping Holly from Nicole because you’re a bitch.”
“Well! Thank you very much.”
“You misunderstood my statement. I said you’re not a bitch. This isn’t like you. So what the hell is going on?”
Sighing deeply, she appeared to let down her guard. “Philip, you don’t want to know.”
“I traveled a thousand miles to get here. I’m pretty sure I want to know.”
“What I mean is you’re better off not knowing.”
He clapped his hands together. “Okay, that’s it.” He stopped walking as they reached the corner. “Something is definitely going on. Talk to me.”
“I can’t.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
Hesitating, she finally said, “Can’t.”
He nodded. “Okay, well, that’s a start.”
“Please don’t press.”
“On one condition.”
“What?”
“Meet me for brunch tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Just do.” He looked around and motioned with his chin. “Greenwich Cafe across the street. Sign says they’re open 24 hours. Meet me there at 10:00. The early risers should be gone by then.” He put his arm around her and turned her back in the direction they came from. “For now, I’ll walk you back to your parents’ place.”
“It’s only a half a block. I can manage by myself.”
“Shh. Stop talking. Just let me do this.”
She rolled her eyes, and joked, “Start talking. Stop talking. You know you’ve gotten very indecisive in your old age.”
He chuckled. “Ah. Now that’s the Chloe I know and—” He stopped himself from saying what he was thinking. Instead, he said, “and remember.”

Bossy much, Philip? Whatever his feelings are it would really be best for him to just back off from this situation. He's said what he had to say and Chloe is not interested in listening to reason.

Philip will find a way to drag the truth out of Chloe. Unless this gives her some time to come up with a somewhat believable story.

I just binge-read this whole thing. You have a real gift. I liked the imagery of Phillip throwing his cigarette into the ocean. I could just see it. I especially loved the guys in the white jackets coming for Phillip in his dream, and the Phillip/Parker scenes. I'm a sucker for kids and dogs.

Ok. I’m starting to think there’s something seriously wrong and Chloe is protecting this baby (or possibly Nicole) somehow. That would make this all a little easier to swallow....

Seems like Chloe’s not interested in listening, no matter what Philip says.

Chapter 4a
Philip had stopped at an ATM on his way to meet Chloe for breakfast. He was running low on cash. He’d stayed at an Air BnB apartment last night and the woman who rented it to him insisted on cash-only transactions. This trip to New York was setting him back a pretty penny. The well wasn’t bottomless like it used to be in the old days before his father disowned him again. Too bad he couldn’t charge his expenses back to Brady.
Sitting at a table in the Greenwich Cafe drinking a cup of coffee, he wondered if he’d have any more luck getting Chloe to confide in him today than he had last night. It was clear something was up, and equally clear she didn’t want anyone to know.
He looked up when he heard the bell above the restaurant door jingle. Chloe walked into the Cafe holding Parker by the hand while pushing the baby carriage through the door.
Philip left his table to help her. “I didn’t know you were bringing the kids,” he remarked.
“You didn’t say not to.”
He cleared his throat. “Well, it inhibits our conversation a bit. Or was that the general idea?”
“It’s Saturday and my parents have plans," she explained matter-of-factly. "They have a standing date to play squash with another couple at The Racquet Club on Central Park West.” When Philip made a face, she added, “Why do you look so unhappy that I brought my children? I thought you liked Parker.”
Parker looked up at Philip and scowled. “I thought you liked me.”
Philip ruffled the boy's hair. “Of course I do, Parker. You’re one of my all-time favorite people. The reason I made a face is because I just can’t picture your Grandma Nancy playing squash.”
“Frankly, neither can I,” Chloe said. “I think she and the other wife hang out at the juice bar while the men play squash.”
“Now that I can picture.” Philip led them to the small round table he’d been waiting at. “I would have gotten a bigger table if I knew we were going to be four people.” He lifted his coffee cup off the small table and looked around at the nearly empty restaurant. “Well, take your pick. How about the booth over there by the window?”
“Not by the window.” She scanned the coffee shop. “Over there. Near the waiter’s station.”
Parker slid into the booth and Chloe sat on the outside so she could keep one hand on Holly’s stroller. Philip sat alone on the opposite side of the booth. As they got situated, Philip set his phone on the table and said quietly, “What are you hiding from, Chloe?”
“Mommy’s not hiding,” Parker giggled. “She’s right here.”
“Parker’s right, I’m not hiding.”
Talking into his cup, he lifted only his eyes and mumbled, “Aren’t you? Then why didn’t you want to sit by the window?”
