I'm glad that Chloe is opening up to Philip. I agree that the rest of the conversation should wait until they can talk privately.

Thanks for your continued interest in this story, guys. Love reading your comments!
Here's a taste of the week ahead.
Philip, Chloe and the children finally arrive at Philip's home. Despite her promises to open up to him, Chloe keeps finding reasons to put it off.

Of course she keeps putting it off....Chloe is the queen of keeping her information and her feelings locked up.
Thanks, boss!

Chapter 5c
Philip widened his eyes to try and keep from falling asleep at the wheel of the rental car. Right now he was the only one in the car who wasn’t asleep. It was just after sundown and he was sailing down Highway 1. He wished there were toll roads which would force him to pay attention instead of the new electronic toll collections that take a picture of your license plate and send you a bill in the mail.
He reminded himself they could also send him a speeding ticket in the mail, so he slowed his speed to seventy miles an hour and pressed a button to roll down the window partway to get some fresh air. He then switched on the radio to try and give him something to focus on.

Chloe’s head bobbed. “Are we there yet?”
He glanced at his dashboard clock. “We still have about another hour to go.”
“Where the hell do you live anyway?” She looked at the dashboard clock. “We left Miami Airport more than an hour ago.”
“Take a guess,” he said, mostly to make conversation to keep himself awake.
She turned her head to look at the backseat. “They’re sleeping like little angels, both of them.” Turning forward, she added, “We’ll probably need to make a pit stop. Holly probably needs to be changed.” She watched the road signs. “You live in the Florida Keys??”
“Yes, I do.”
“That is so not your style. Tell the truth, Philip. You met some island girl and that’s why you ended up in Florida?”

Mmmmm. So many comments but it's based on the way I read Chloe's question. I'll have to bite my tongue and wait for the next bit before I can comment.

Ummmm. What’s it to you, Chloe? It’s not really any of your business.
(I have a case of the Mondays...so I read her tone as very snarky/nosy.)

What did Florida ever do to you, Chloe?
She seems awfully snarky and if I were Philip I'd regret helping her.

Chapter 5d
“You live in the Florida Keys??” she asked.
“Yes, I do.”
“That is so not your style. Tell the truth, Philip. You met some island girl and that’s why you ended up in Florida?”
He glanced at her without turning his head. “Yeah right," he answered with sarcasm. "No, Chloe, it wasn’t a woman who lured me to Florida. It was distance. The Keys are pretty much the farthest I could go without leaving the country. It’s not Mexico.”
“No, but it’s the Gulf of Mexico,” she observed.
“Very different from Mexico.”
“So why did you feel the need to move so far from everything.” There was a long moment of silence. She looked out the window and quietly said, “Okay don’t answer. I figured it out.”
“Marathon,” he said, seemingly out of the blue.
Her brow knit. “What’s Marathon? A gas station?”
“No. I live on Marathon Key. I have a place on the water. It’s pretty quiet except during hurricane season and Spring Break.”
“What do you do during Spring Break?”
With a shrug, he said, “I haven’t been there during Spring Break yet, but I can tell you what I’ll be doing next Spring. Staying in.”
“Hmmm. I never thought of you as the hermit type.”
“I never thought of you as the babynapper type.”
“Ouch.”
“Ditto.”
Looking out the window, she said sarcastically, “Well, this is a pleasant drive.”
“We could sing,” he joked. Remembering a car ride with Chloe long ago and far away, he mused, “You could hang your head out the window and shout that you have the best boyfriend.”
She cocked her head and looked at him. “Very funny.” Reaching for his arm, she added, “Actually, I take that back. What you’re doing to try and protect me and my children … it’s incredible. You’ve shown me unwavering support even though I haven’t exactly been a joy to deal with.”
“I get it,” he said empathetically. “You’ve been through a lot and your defenses are up.”
“True, but still. I’m sorry for the way I’ve acted and the way I've treated you,” she said sincerely. “You deserve better.”
“You’re right. I do. You know what else I deserve? I deserve the truth.” He glanced in her direction. “So if you’re really sorry, you can start by telling me what’s really going on. And you can end by giving Holly back to Nicole.”
She leaned back against the head rest and a tear rolled down her cheek. “If only it were that simple.” He raised his brow and glanced at her. “I’ll tell you everything when we’re alone and little pitchers can’t overhear.”
Okay, Philip thought to himself. We’re finally getting somewhere.

Interesting choice of location. Glad Chloe’s finally (hopefully) starting to soften towards Philip.

I wonder what made Chloe suddenly wake up and realize how much Philip is sacrificing for her.

I still feel like her niceness out of nowhere is actually a stall on telling Philip the truth....
